How lucky we were to come across this cosy little, family run restaurant on the hilltop village of Barga purely by chance one lunchtime. We took the advice of the patron on both the food (fresh porcini funghi) and the wine (from the Fattoria Colleverde vineyard a few kilometres away) and spent a relaxing lunch break away from the tourist trail of nearby Lucca. The quality of the food, the presentation and the service and the friendliness of the staff were what made this restaurant experience a memorable occasion for us. We would definitely recommend a detour to Barga, a beautiful village in the hills, to eat here.

We came across this restaurant on our first day in Barga and was recommended to have a meal there. When we went in on the evening to book a table, we were taken out onto the balcony and asked if we would like a seat out there, which we said would be wonderful. But when we went in the following evening there were no tables available on the balcony and were taken to a table at the back of the restaurant. We were bought menus which the owner said he had translated into English for us, we placed our order and had our first course which was ok, but can say that I have had better. We then had steak with black truffle which looked delightful, but we sat there waiting for vegetables or other accompaniments, we called the waitress who in turn called the owner, but he just bought us the menu back and said that we did not order any. We later found out from the people who had recommended us that they had a separate list of accompaniments which we were not given. The owner did not offer to get anything for us and to be honest was not in the least interested. I am not sure how much the meal cost and to be honest do not want to know as was probably overpriced for the service we received.

Another feature is that they have tv monitors so that you can watch your food being prepared in the kitchen, I was shocked to see one of the staff blow her nose, put the tissue in her pocket and then carry on preparing food without changing her gloves or even washing her hands. Thankfully this was after we had been given our food.

Looking at the other reviews for this restaurant I can see people rate it very highly, but we will certainly not be revisiting when we go back to Barga next year.

We came across this gem of a restaurant while ambling through the streets of Barga, Lucca and what a find. We were presented with a glass of prosecco upon arival. The owner and his brother run the restaurant, one front of house and the other in the kitchen. Food was brilliant. We were staying in the area, and decided to return for second visit the food and service were so good.My favourite dish was spagetti with stewed prawns. Homemade pasta with girolles was also very good. There is a great deal of thought gone into the menu, house wine is locally sourced and are very good for the prices charged. We were not disappointed with desserts, and the dark chocolate souffle was delicious. Scacciaguai is a must for food lovers visiting Barga.

Difficult to find as the signs point in the wrong direction but one glimpse is enough to convince that this is a serious eating establishment. We had 3 primi - prawns with garlic potato puree and truffle oil, ravioli of smoked ham and tagliatelli with gorgonzola and mushrooms. All three were superb - fresh ingredients, expertly executed. No industrial stuff here. The house wine (red) - 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cab Sauv - is well worth trying. All in all, a delicious experience and excellent value.

By the way, the nearby gelateria antica di Barga offers first rate, home made, ice-cream.

A very diverse menu with mainly Tuscan dishes with some continental twists. My wife had the sushi to start with whilst I had the Tagliatelli pastsa with the local mushroom sauce. Both excellent. The owner/waiter helped us with the wine selection, which completmented our steaks perfectly. The T-bone a la Fiorentina was truly amazing and cooked to perfection, which isn't easy. I had this same dish in Florence a few years ago and it was excellent, but this was better. A HUGE piece of meat and a carnavore's dream. The service was very tentative and helpful and my wife approved of the decor (so it must be good as believe me she is hard to please!). The 3 course meal cost just short of €100 with an excellent wine and coffee. Highly recommended.
