We had a eight day Page & Moy holiday at the hotel and enjojed our time. The things lacking though were, a shower instead of a bath that was cramped and had a fixed spray at a high level, the towels were had seen too much wear, the beds are very narrow,
the lighting in the room was poor so it was very difficult to sit and read. On a positive note the two chairs are comfotable and there is space to sit in front of the TV and the balcony also spacious. The breakfast selection was good, rolls, cereal (limited selection)), yogurt, fresh fruit a couple of days, cold hard boiled eggs, cheese & ham.
Could hava done with an alternative fresh bread. Staff very attentive, suplying extra coffee.
Their restaurant closeby, the food was good, with good cheap wine on tap or bottled.

A very friendly, obliging staf made our group (of 36, Page & Moy - Essence of Tuscany Tour) very welcome. My room, a single on the first floor, functioned well. everything worked, TV all in Italian. The bed was not sprung, but a dense foam which seemed to keep you in one place! odd at first but quite comfy.
Breakfast was an extended continental style - choice of cereals, yoghourt, blood or ordinary orange juice. cheese spread or thick pieces, boiled eggs, jams, butter, biscuits, cakes, sweet pastries and coffee or tea served by Anna or Sylvie
Dinner was served in the associated restaurand 100 yards round the corner, Again very Italian, four courses of soup, pasta, meat and desert. The soups were thick homely and filling. The pasta was delicious(but served only with a sauce very Italian). The meat course was selected from a choice of two for the following night. Most often pork(3) or chicken(2), once turkey, once escalope(not specified), 'mixed grill('pork, sausage, rib), 'mixed roast meats' and accompanied with some vegetable. The vegetables varied from roast potato, boiled potato, broccolli, carrot AND green beans, spinach, courgette AND tomato. The salad was an issue - four bowls of lettuce, cabbage, red and green peppers between 36 is hardly adequate. More was usually provided but it was a bind having to get up a number of times from the table to get extra bits of salad..

Conveniently situated Hotel with some lovely views, in the delightful town of Barga. Staff were most helpful and cheerful. There was a good choice of food for breakfast and accommodation was quiet and comfortable. The spacious lounge was appreciated particularly as the weather was unseasonably very wet.The location was a good base for walkers, with access to local transport.

Can't believe there are good reviews of this rubbish hotel. The best thing is the roof terrace and views, but the jacuzzi was definitely out of action and there were several broken chairs which caught out members of our group. The lift was not working either, but it was mended the next day (not much comfort to those who had to carry their bags upstairs). Our room was depressing, maybe the 2nd floor rooms with balconies are better? The ceiling was painted brown, the beds were uncomfortable, the pillows were hard, there were only 2 little bits of soap provided - in a 3 star hotel. The hairdryer tubing was split so you burned your hand when you used it. the TV didn't work, so Monica used a hairdryer to blow dry it, not sure how safe that was. Breakfast was pathetic for 9 euros: watery juice, one roll per person, cheese spread or sliced cheese on alternate days, hard boiled eggs of uncertain date, and packets of biscuits and cake. The restaurant was of the expected standard and we had no choice of meals. One night we asked if we could hace a pizza and were told NO, ASSOLUTAMENTE NO. Every night there was a rush for the miniscule bowls of salad. Dessert was tasteless ice cream, the smallest amount of strawberries, a tiny portion of fruit salad (mainly apple), One n ight we simply couldn't be bothered to turn up, it was that bad. Across the road is a beautiful Liberty hotel called The Moorings, a real 3 star!

The Pergola Hotel is a very friendly family-run hotel, located in a quiet street in Barga but close to all the attractions. As soon as you enter the hotel, you can feel the tranquil atmosphere. The entrance has large sofas where you are able to relax, reading, chatting or watching the world go by. Our stay this time was no different to the others, in that the family and staff welcomed us warmly and from then on were always friendly and helpful. Our room was very comfortable, equipped with all the necessary amenities, and from the balcony, we had a wonderful view of the town. We mostly ate in the Pergola restaurant, where the food is delicious. A lift takes you to the large roof terrace of the hotel, where you can relax on the deckchairs or take a dip in the jacuzzi. Drinks can be ordered by calling reception and these arrive promptly. On one side of the roof terrace is a spectacular panorama of the mountainous apennine region and on the other is a splendid view of Barga old town. This is like looking at a large pop-up postcard! We have stayed in the Pergola Hotel several times and we thoroughly recommend it.

Ugly lobby, dirty room, sheets with holes in and not changed for the whole week we were there. Nothing worked, TV, phone etc. Shower like those one would find in a school gym i.e. fixed nozzle on wall. Intermittent hot water. Towels not changed.

Food lousy, not much choice and one serving time. Salad was shredded iceburg and tinned sweetcorn. Staff didn't speak English so not much use in trying to resolve matters on site, despite Pergola serving the Brits for over 20 years. They should employ a bi-lingual person. We did our own thing and found that the rest of Tuscany have good English speaking youth so ordering food etc. was much better than in our own hotel!

We speak some 'tourist' Italian and that helped around Barga, so stay at a different hotel, have your drinks/coffees at the lovely Alpino where the locals have theirs (ncluding a small limoncello or grappa!). Enjoy the place but steer clear of the Pergola unless you like slumming it at high prices.....xx
