“The Compass Rose is Exceptional!”
Reviewed July 7, 2015 for a stay in June 2015

Once again, the Compass Rose exceeded expectations – and that’s saying something because this was our second stay at the Compass Rose. The first is summarized in my June 25, 2014 review below. When we asked the kids where they wanted to go for vacation this summer, naturally they replied “Hawaii,” then “Wally World” – but once those facetious National Lampoon’s Vacation responses were out of the way, the vote was unanimous to return to N. Captiva and the Compass Rose. It was even better the second time – perhaps because of the familiarity.
This time we were a group of 7 (“kids” ages 24-34), and we had plenty of room to spread out and enjoy both collective and private space. The owners really do a top notch job of keeping this place updated, filled with amenities, and “user-friendly.” This year’s updates featured a new widescreen TV, new fridge, and a new silent running Bosch dishwasher, among other things. Great master bedroom with nicely tiled master bath and screened in porch outside the door with a hot tub. We did everything mentioned in last year’s review again this year, and enjoyed it even more the second time around. Added jet ski’s for an afternoon (again from the great folks at Boats & Fun located right next to the N. Captiva Club), as well as more nature hiking and some running to burn off the calories from overeating.
Getting to the island is part of the fun (at least as we look at it) – and using the owner’s helpful info sheet that is filled with all the right suggestions, it’s pretty easy. We flew in from STL and Denver to RSW in Ft.Meyers, where the Pine Island taxi folks picked us up in two separate groups; quick stop at the Publix to load on the pre-ordered groceries for the week; then to the marina where the Island Girl picks you up for a nice water taxi ride to Barnacles on N. Cap. The owner has a great assistant, Sherman, who meets you at the dock and loads all your gear and groceries into a golf cart, along with a couple other golf carts the owner has waiting for you and the family, and you caravan for a few minutes to the house. Our plane had mechanical problems (it happens) and even though we were 6 hours late in arriving, it just took a few phone calls before we even left STL and the taxi and Island Girl accommodated us with a late night pick up and moonlit water taxi ride. Just pointing out that it was easy to work around logistical difficulties because everyone (taxi, water taxi, and Sherman) were coordinating and easy going about it. (Try getting that level of service in Cancun or St. Thomas when your plane shows up after dark instead of 1:50 in the afternoon like it was supposed to….. )
We don’t often go to the same place twice, but the Compass Rose really is inviting and wonderful for creating memories and relaxing. Proximity to the beach can’t be overrated in our minds, and this place has awesome views from an almost glassed in main floor, to the mezzanine, and the crow’s nest on top is really spectacular. There was a always a good breeze, the beach is essentially private, and everyone on the island is friendly and relaxed. We are now wishing we were back there!! Hard to believe, but it really is better than the photos.

Liked best: Location, cleanliness, owner's responsiveness and overall service, and the island itself
Liked least: dropping a cell phone in the water while photographing manatees at the dock; but found it with a mask and my lucky snorkel and it still works!

“Great vacation!”
Reviewed April 21, 2015 for a stay in April 2015

We were a group of 10 (4 adults and 6 kids) and stayed here during our spring break this April. Prior to checking in we spent 2 days at Universal Orlando, so this was the perfect decompression afterwards. The house is well kept and well stocked ... especially the kitchen. We had two golf carts to buzz around the island. It is only one house off of the beach which was very convenient. The beach is nice... white sand & clear water.

We also rented a boat for 3 days from Boats and Fun. This was well worth it as we explored other islands, beaches and restaurants. We also used Sandie's grocery service to stock the house beforehand. This was crucial, as there is no grocery store on the island. You can order seafood from Boats and Fun ... Which was very good. Overall a great vacation....

“Exceeds expectations”

We just returned from a short but wonderful stay at The Compass Rose on N Captiva. We spent the first three days in Florida at Universal Studios and the last 4 days on N Captiva. From the moment we got on the island and into the house, our blood pressure dropped and relaxation took over. The house is actually “better than advertised”. It is rare to find a vacation property that exceeds expectations but Compass Rose did just that. The location is less than 50 yards to the beach which is never crowded. On Saturday afternoon between 3:00 and 6:00, we were the only people on the beach for as far as you could see.
The house itself is beautifully and uniquely furnished. The bedrooms have very nice mattresses and linens, and the baths are all updated and furnished with plenty of towels and other accessories. Screened and tiled porches make for great places for morning coffee and evening cocktails and the roof deck is perfect for a glass of champagne while watching the sunset. The living area has plenty of comfortable seating and a very good TV and surround sound system. Many board games, puzzles, videos, and CD’s are provided to help occupy the quiet times you may encounter.
The kitchen is probably the best equipped rental kitchen we have stayed in. Plenty of dishes, glassware and serve ware and actually has complete sets of matching silverware. The appliances are very good and there is a surprisingly thorough stockpile of spices, foil and plastic wrap, coffee filters, etc. It also has the little things like good knives, cooking utensils, blenders, food processor, cutting boards, etc. that make cooking at the house easy and enjoyable. The Weber Gas grill worked perfectly and we used it every night of our stay.
Overall, it was a wonderful stay and we would recommend Compass Rose to anyone looking for a beach house on North Captiva.

“Spectacular vacation house”

The only reason we're giving it 5 stars is because six or seven isn't an option. Took my wife, 3 kids, ranging from 23-31, and daughter's boyfriend (to carry our luggage and keep her entertained). Generally they can be a picky crowd to please, but even the first night there they were asking if they could come back. Listing is accurate, and if anything, understated. I'd add that there is both a Weber propane grill and a charcoal grill, so buying charcoal isn't a necessity. Island Girl Charter's Cap'n Jim took the time to find a pod of dolphins and entertained us with 10 minutes that was far better than 5 or 6 "Dolphin cruises" we'd shelled out hundreds of dollars for in the past. Every level of this house has something unique to offer. The screened in porches were handy for bug avoidance in the evening, but bugs were never a problem on the crows nest thanks to the breeze at the high level. Kitchen is well-thought out and fully equipped. Plan your grocery shopping in advance, although there are a few places to eat out when you don't feel like cooking. We rented a boat from Boats R. Fun (?) next to the N. Captiva Club, and went off to find manatees and dolphins, and then down to Captiva to eat at the Bubble Room, about 1 block from Jensen's marina. Use the GPS to avoid the sandbars.... Free kayaks from N. Captiva Club are included with this unit, and that was great fun - shouldn't have waited until the last day to do that though. Pay attention to the advice about not overpacking - shorts, t-shirts, and swimsuits are all you will need. Maybe a polo shirt if you are eating at the Boat House. Sherman met us and took us back to the water taxi, and was "on call" when we had a minor problem with the AC - batteries went dead in the thermostat and he was there and fixed it immediately. Plenty of shells, hiking trails, and never ran out of things to do. Hardly even bothered to watch tv. Couldn't have been better - one of the nicest vacations we've ever had, and certainly one of the nicest places on the island, in location, amenities, and layout.

“Fantastic stay in North Captiva”
Reviewed July 2, 2013 for a stay in June 2013

House was wonderful, in beautiful condition. Very clean, great furnishings, well equipped, very comfortable with loads of space for a family of two adults and three kids. The views are as billed, beautiful from both the roof but also main level. Delightful to have breakfast looking at the ocean.

A great quiet sandy beach is very, very close. Also used the north captiva club a lot, pool, tennis and kayaks.

A few nice restaurants but bring plenty of food. The week we went we were unable to have the groceries delivered right to the house but did order ahead to the Publix grocery store in Pineland, which worked well. Picked up a box of gorgeous fresh Mangoes from a farm close to the Marina.

Weather was lovely. Ocean so warm. Beautiful sunsets. Tortoises, manatee, dolphins a plenty.

Will go back to North Captiva and definitely stay at the Compass Rose.
