Satisfying but straightforward walk, though interesting landscape, along lovely river, plus 3 bridges, ending with great view of Mt Cook and glacier lake.

Thank Chris S

Considerably longer than the Kia Point track, and more varied. The track goes over a number of swing bridges which take you over the glacier melt water. There are wooden walkways over the more damp parts of the trail. Just after the second bridge you will find that Mt Cook comes into view. Allow a couple of hours gentle walking to reach the lake.

This track was an easy 3 and a half hour return trip up into the valley below Mt Cook.
During summer make sure to wear sunscreen and a hat is the track is very exposed (not much shade).

The track was well maintained and easy with little incline. As we took the track later in the afternoon, it was not that busy which was great, giving us more time to enjoy the majestic scenery.

While some other walkers complained to us that there was not much special about the walk, we found that it was great -- the finish of the track at a glacial lake was a great place to rest after the walk and dip our toes into the icy water!

So much to see on this walk. And if you don't have a lot of time it only takes 15 minutes to get to the first swing bridge and see the Hochstetter Glacier. Sometimes you can hear the glacier 'groaning' as the ice moves - not what you expect. The second swing bridge is completely new and really impressive - this is about an hour and a half to two hours return. Going right up to the Hooker Glacier adds another hour each way (so about two hours total). Going before a bit before Christmas is a great time - you will get to see the Mount Cook Lily in flower - quite unique.

This walk is amazing. The scenery is breathtaking. Really worth the effort. A bit longer than we thought it would be. The lake with floating ice burgs at the end is great.
