We stayed 2 nights in an upstairs unit and it was great. Quiet, spacious and comfortable accommodation within easy walk to waterfront and restaurants.Tasty breakfast in the cafe and mates rates on the White Island volcano tour which is fantastic. The friendly staff Really made our stay a delight

Room Tip: Upstairs unit is the better option

We stayed in The Cottage, a spacious and tidy house with two bedroooms. Very handy and very comfortable. It is an easy walk into town, but immediately across the road is the waterfront -- very handy if you are going on a trip to White Island because some of them leave very early in the morning. Everything was provided and we were very comfortable.

Room Tip: The cottage is spacious and would be great for a family.

We stayed here for two nights, to get away from our own busy Hotel in Rotorua. We did a deal that included breakfast in the cafe and it was awesome value! The rooms were clan and comfy and a really easy walk to restaurants, we can't wait to go back again next school holidays when we have another break...

We stayed here after other accommodation fell through, and were very pleased with it for the price. The double + single studio room was big, and had great amenities, including a kitchenette and a lovely ensuite. We had an upstairs unit, which was more private with no pedestrian and vehicle traffic to contend with. The back driveway gets locked at some point during the evening - we had to jump the fence - but I would stay here again for its great location.

We booked this motel, not wanting anything more than a place to stay for 2 nights to base our excursion to White Island from. White Island is an active volcanic island, a short 90 minute boat ride from Whakatane Little did we know we would get the complete package. The company that runs the tour also runs the motel, an attached gift shop and wonderful bakery restaurant. The place was so complete, we never even explored the downtown area. We arrived the afternoon before our tour date to find a very ship shape motel. Staff were friendly, the room was huge, sparkling clean and well appointed with a kitchenette. There was also a no nonsense approach about noise after 10 PM. We liked what we saw.

After our long drive, we only wanted to unpack and relax. Later on, our thoughts turned to supper. The helpful staff recommended several restaurants nearby. As we checked them out, we noticed the local Sportfisherman's Club almost right across the street and popped in to take a look see, thinking it was for members only. To our surprise, visitors were not only welcome, but encouraged. We signed a visitor card for no fee and enjoyed a catch of the day fish and chips supper with a salad and refreshments for an unbelievably low price. It was order at the counter service, but the food quality and price and the view were great.

Then a stroll down the estuary and to bed, hoping the weather would cooperate for our morning tour. We awoke early and had a latte and fabulous breakfast in the motel bakery restaurant. About an hour before tour time, we heard the tour was a go. The 5 star service continued on the boat trip. The entire crew were there to make our day special, with interesting information about the area, a nice snack on the way out, a safety conscious, fabulous informational tour of the other worldly volcano and a lunch on board while we sailed around the island to look at the wildlife and plants. And on the way back, the clouds parted, the sun shone and we were surrounded by dolphins. I know we can not credit our hosts with pulling Mother Nature's strings, but they definitely gave us the complete deal, as promised.

We stayed another night, enjoyed the scenery, the quiet room, the helpful staff and another fabulous breakfast and sadly went on our way. This was definitely at the top of our list of best experiences during a full month down under and we highly recommend Pee Jays and all that they offer.

Room Tip: 2nd floor rooms will be quieter, as main floor rooms are adjacent to drive lane and parking that par...

Free wi-fi was a nice touch, the staff was friendly, and we had a lovely room (though even with the curtains closed, it's slightly odd to be sleeping right next to a giant windowed-wall to the parking lot. If you're just interested in the trip to White Island, you can probably find cheaper accommodation, but it was convenient for us to pair the volcano trip with the hotel.

Room Tip: Don't be suckered into paying extra for a room with a "spa".

Our room was upstairs so lugging all the cases upstairs took a little effort. Huge room with soft chairs as well as a breakfast table. Large bathroom too with a lovely shower. Only motel we have stayed at with a unit large enough to fit both our suitcases on which made life much easier. The self-catering facilities were excellent. The motel itself had a bit of a back-packer feel to it and we didn't like the fact that the entrance was a large glass door so people walking past would look in unless you kept the curtains closed. The location was excellent though - right next to the harbour and walking distance from the town - it made an excellent base from which to explore the area.
