Actually we're looked for a place where we could wash gold by our self... for fun. Nothing happened there. But doesn't matter there is another adventure. It's a full operated museum, we saw it. A guided tour we got from a guy with car number plate "Bowman". He pushed us 100 back in history. When he talk to us we hear the hammering gold miners, we saw how people get crazy about gold and how hard was the life of the miners. When you leave the battery and meet the sun it was like we sit in a time machine. Highly recommended...

Ashley provides one hour tours of this fully operational historic gold processing plant. Adults are $10 and children are $5. Unfortunately I was the only one there in the morning and he doesn't start up the Stamper Battery for just one guest but Ashley offered me a free tour of the building. He was very informative and passionate about gold mining and local history. He also provided lots of tips about local walks in the area. You can also pan for your own gold and at the back of the property there are steps up to a lookout for a view over Coromandel Town.

As, sadly, we were the only visitors that morning, we had a wide-ranging discussion with geologist Ashley that, apart from gold mining and processing in the Coromandel, covered Auckland's vocanos, global warming, healing with manuka honey, TV show Doc Martin, ...

If you're interested in industrial archaeology the battery is a must-see.

After half an hour of (too much in detail) talking, we kindly asked the tour guide of the Battery how much longer it would take (since everybody knows that when visiting New Zealand, you never have time enough, so we were on a tight schedule), the tour guide asked us in a very rude way to leave and refused to give us further information.
VERY unfriendly and not at all like all the other Kiwi's we have met. Once again: very rude and impolite.
Would not advise anyone to go there!
