“Too Much Talk”

Wonderful opportunity to look at a live working historical stamper battery. Knowledgeable guide but far too much talk and detail. Sadly the engine wasn't working when we were there but the water wheel is impressive.

“Gold mining history & climate change”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 31, 2013

This is a very interesting hour or so with a geologist that puts climate change (especially as it relates to NZ) into perspective as well as giving a great history lesson about the gold that was taken out of the Coromandel region. The area was a huge gold mining industry before the miners decimated the huge kauri forests to get at the gold.
The gold stamper is one of the few still operating (mainly for tourists) as Ashley explains the process of getting gold from the rocks and then from the gravel after the stamper has crushed the rock. Ashley only operated one of the stampers (crushers) for a short period while we were there, but the noise was deafening with only the one. With all six going, it would have been a bit too much (and the local probably would have been up in arms).
For the small fee charged by Ashley, it was a great education.
