Owner description: Barry Brickell (acclaimed potter, painter, engineer and conservationist) started building the railway 35 years ago to bring clay from the hillside to his pottery. This amazing switch-back railway climbs the mountain to the 'Eyeful Tower' with magnificent views over the Hauraki Gulf. The one hour return journey incorporates superb engineering with 2 spirals, 3 short tunnels, 5 reversing points and several large bridges. Unique pottery sculptures and tile walls line the track through a regenerating forest setting. Back at the station watch the DVD about Barry and the railway. Enjoy a walk in the sculpture garden followed by a bush walk in the predator free native sanctuary. Pottery, souvenirs, mini-bricks, books and the DVD are available to purchase in our craft shop. Tours Times: 10.15am, 11.30am, 12.45pm, 2pm and 3.15pm DAILY. During the busy seasons we may run additional tours at 9am, 4.30pm and 5.45pm (subject to demand) As this attraction is extremely popular we strongly suggest you book your seat; especially over the summer period.

“totally above expectations”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 28, 2012

I really thought we visit this just because our 4-year-old likes trains, but I was wrong. My wife and I also really enjoyed it. The narrow track, the tunnels, the bridges, the view - just amazing. And if I think that one man, now 77 years old, has built all this during 26 years... Totally recommend it for families with young kids.

“Passion and drive personified”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 17, 2012

Not knowing what to expect and thinking what is so cool about a ride on a dinky train through some bush, I showed up at Driving Creek to see what all the excitement was about. Well I was completely blown away by the experience. Right from the start, the warmth and friendliness of the staff showed their passion for the job they had. The tour started on time and you need to be there at the designated time as it is a popular attraction and the trains run like clockwork., Plenty of parking and toilets if you need to use them. The ride itself was accompanied by a commentary by Pete or driver and was informative and humourous and not to heavy on facts and figures. The higher you got to the top the views got better and once we had wound our way through the beautiful native bush the stunning view from the Eyeful Tower (love that name) was breathtaking. We could see all the way back to Auckland and beyond. Barry Brickell the man who inspired this venture has let his passion for the project come through in all that he has done there. A lifetime of work poured into this small place and it is wonderful. Highly recommended to do this excursion if you are in the Coromandel area. Easy to find from the township and a must do on any bucket list for anyone visiting New Zealand.

“Great fun”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 12, 2012

I wasn't really sure what to expect but we had a fantastic time. We showed up at around 11 to book for the 2pm ride (I think in the low season only one morning and one afternoon train are guaranteed) and were delighted to find that they had added more trains to the schedule and that there was one at 11:30. Call ahead to book and find out if there are other times available. Anyway, the ride up and down was very cool. Along the way there is a lot of art to see from the train, and some interesting commentary from the conductor. You end up at the Eyefull Tower, a sort of pagoda at the highest point of the rail where you can walk around and take in the view. We are two twenty something year olds and we had a great time - not just for children.

“Amazing attraction”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2012

This is well worth a visit and the wait we had to catch the next train. We actually took a scenic tour further north of coromandel while we were waiting and the scenery was beautiful. The train ride was fantastic. Neat little train carriages and personalised we trip. Great pottery items along the way. The views from the top are awesome.
