“Fabulous scenery, so relaxing”
Reviewed October 7, 2012

Just had two nights at this hidden gem. Beautiful bush, fantastic birdlife all here. The chalet was all we could have asked for, lovely natural timber, nice linen and toiletries. Fully self contained kitchen, CD player, fireplace. Private outdoor spas where you can relax and look at the stars and listen to the birds in the evening were just great too.

A couple of girlfriends and I left partners and kids behind to head here for the weekend and it was everything we hoped for. The chalet we stayed in was beautifully built and furnished - everything was finished to a super-high spec. Being the middle of winter, we'd all packed plenty of thermal clothing, partly expecting to be wearing it inside, but there was no need - with a very warm gas fire place we were toasty as well as comfortable. The chalet had lots of nice little touches - robes and slippers, and french press coffee etc.

The spas down the boardwalk were brilliantly appointed and we had spas under the stars both evenings. We all had facials and massages with Jan the masseuse and could not have felt more relaxed. The service from Teresa was outstanding, and the breakfast and coffees we had were good too.

Tangiaro is a retreat in many senses of the word: there is no cellphone reception there so it's compulsory phones and internet-off time (unless you wish to pay for wifi), plus it's a windy, gravel road to get there or to the local beaches. So probably not a place for people with young kids who need to get out and about, but perfect if you truly want to relax and get away from it all.

This place really grows on you. We had a long, beautiful drive to get there but my first impression was of a fairly ugly set of low-rise buildings. Then we discovered our accommodation - a stand-alone chalet - was huge, and everything was good from here on. We were given directions to a nearby waterfall - just follow the stream they said, not mentioning the 4 crossings (wear sandals, it's pretty slippy/hard on the feet in the water). But it was a lovely walk, very quiet except the odd birdsong (my Kiwi girlfriend pointed out a Tui which apparently I was very lucky to see and hear!). The waterfall was pretty small but great fun to swim in. We ate our own food and went to the main central area to play a bit of table tennis and pool. Sadly the pool table had been overtaken by kiddies so instead we tried a little shuffleboard type game which was great fun and highly addictive.

The highlight of the stay was the spa - we sat on our own with nobody around, no lights, no noise or anything but the sounds of the forest. Very atmospheric.

We love this place! Quality fittings make the rooms truly stylish and the privacy and space strike a very welcome contrast to the bustle of city life. The spa pools, set in native bush, are a great way to end the day. The food is wonderful and very reasonably priced. We have been twice and in winter the huge fire provides a wonderful, warm atmosphere in the dining room and bar. In summer, the huge, open deck sports loads of activities for children and adults alike. We will definitely be back! Thanks Jemima and team for making our stay so relaxing and welcoming our large tribe.

This was our wedding anniversary escape! My husband and I regularly spend time travelling to the top of the Coromandel Peninsula and we have always wanted to stay at Tangiaro, so this seemed like the perfect reason.
Lucky for us our wedding anniversary was on the same weekend as the Paua Festival that Tangiaro have organised and hosted for the last few years and our accommodation included 2 tickets to the festival, therefore this was an added bonus.
On arrival we were really impressed with the setting. The main building and all the lodges are set within a lovely clearing surrounded by native bush with a pond in the middle and a wooden foot bridge over for easy access from the main building to some of the lodges.
Our one bedroom log cabin/lodge was absolutely awesome! It was huge and spacious with shiny wooden floor and wood features throughout. The lounge and kitchen (not a kitchenette!) were very well equiped, really good crockery (not your run-of-the-mill motel stuff), tea cups and coffee mugs, great wine glasses, platters, cheese knives etc.... everything that you might need was there! A full size fridge (not a half size bar fridge), a great selection of english tea, herb teas, a range of coffee and even a coffee plunger. Even pots and pans if you wanted to go that far! Off the kitchen in a huge cupboard was a washing machine and clothes dryer (don't go there either!). Also a separate toilet and vanity situated discretly off the living area. The lounge area was very relaxing with futon/type lounge and huge (comfy) futon armchair which could be opened out.
The bedroom was huge as was the bed, which was wonderfully comfortable with crisp white linen. Off the bedroom was a fantastic bathroom with a full size bath, a huge shower and toilet. It was well stocked with great products, herbal soap, shampoo, thick towels, bath robes and even slippers!
In the evening we had a wonderful meal in the restaurant with a great selection of wines and beers. The next moning we had breakfast brought to our lodge. Thank goodness we only ordered one full cooked breakfast! as it was more than enough for the both of us, loved the fresh, warm bread rolls!
All in all, a fantastic stay, fantastic surroundings with friendly, helpful staff.
My only let down? The TV wasn't a wide screen plasma or LED! It was an old tube type one maybe 20yrs old? However, I was a little surprised it had good reception up there! But there was always the DVD player! Oh! and no TV in the bedroom! But hey - you don't really need it in such a beautiful place.
The drive there can be a little frightening, just drive slowly and stay on the left hand side.

Room Tip: They're all good

Definitely for those who want to get away from it all as this superb accommodation is at least 1.5 hours drive north of Coromandel near Port Charles. Most of the drive is on unsurfaced bendy road with superb views. Be sure to get all your provisions in Coromandel before you make this trip. The accommodation has a restaurant but there are no shops.

The chalet accommodation is top class with a wonderful smell of wood. There are hot tubs but no swimming pool though the sea isn't far away. Stay here if you want to get away from it all but not if you need a buzz around you. This is definitely a very quiet RETREAT and the drive into Coromandel, the closest town, is a long one. I didn't see many other guests during the two nights when I stayed here.

We booked a last minute holiday, so I have to admit that I ended up booking this resort because I was having a hard time finding a room on January 1st. We were all pleasantly surprised upon arriving. The location is very remote and peaceful. If you need to escape, this is the place to do it. Beautiful surroundings and you get your own cabin. Perfect for our family of four. My husband and I had the bedroom and the kids each had a futon sofa in the family area. It was very clean and tidy. There is a restaurant located on site, which comes in handy, as there is not much within a 30-35 minute drive. The kids enjoyed playing pool and fooseball while I enjoyed a glass of wine and the beautiful scenery. There is no swimming pool but there is a wonderful swimming hole if you take a 20 minute walk down the little river out back. The kids loved the adventure! The manager was very helpful when I called for reservations. Be warned that you will have to drive on a very narrow and windy gravel road for 30 minutes. Not for the faint hearted but definitely worth it once you arrive. Plan to stay for a few days. It is just a lovely place to stay and "get away from it all". Make sure you stop in Thames or Coromandel if you want to bring groceries, supplies, wine, etc.
