A very interesting visit - especially after wandering around the great old stone and brick cathedrals of Britain, Italy, & France. This building is classically Colombian: totally medieval in its form and function --- but less than a century old and built entirely with steel re-enforced concrete !! If you look closely you can see the grain pattern in the wooden forms and planks that were used in the construction.

An architectural marvel that deserves a close look, so make sure that you take the tour that goes all the way to the top. Some of the climbing is interior, on spiral steel staircases and some of it is external, along roof ridges, but all of it is safe with handrails and security cages. Try to do the climb when it is sunny for a brilliant view on Manizales.

We happened to visit the Cathedral and found out about the tour, which we are glad we took, even though it is offered only in Spanish. The Cathedral is actually a new building, less than 100 years old, rebuilt in poured concrete after previous ones were destroyed by fires. There are photos and the guide explains the history in detail.

The tour takes you up many stairs, up inside one of the spires and out to an enclosed walkway where you can walk all the way around to get a great view of the city and surrounding hills.

...with an escort to the peak of the cathedral tower. Our guide, an archaeologist, really knew his stuff and spoke with great enthusiasm about the history of this surprisingly modern cathedral. The tour was in Spanish - but there are apparently guides who speak English. The whole trip took about 90 mins and was a small group of about 8 (including kids above a certain height!), so you never felt hemmed in or cramped. You go outside onto the roof and then you climb up and across it, on the outside, (with railings!) into a doorway that leads into the actual dome from where you can climb right up into its heights for a spectacular view of Manizales and the surrounding area. Manizales is pleasant enough and a good stop-off point if your bussing it from Medellin into the Zona Cafeteria.

Even though I've seen dozens of large churches in South America, this one still impressed me.
Not much to say but just enjoy the architecture.
