“Picking Coffee In Colombia”
Reviewed May 26, 2014

My coffee lesson begins at the beautiful Hacienda Venecia. We head down across a river bed to pick coffee beans. We start along a path but gradually we are walking through thick bushes smacking us all over. I’m sure I must be getting malaria. The lives of the coffee pickers are hard and the work is tedious and difficult. We learn how the beans are processed and about all the machinery, certification and care involved in transforming the berry into coffee beans. The fresh beans are examined. I was slow at finding the good ones. Then we roasted my beans in a special toaster. We smelled different coffee bean aromas from tester bottles. We have a last cup of coffee at the coffee farm. It is starting to rain. I think about all that work that went into producing this one cup of coffee . I think about picking those beans every time I have a cup of coffee now. Coffee will always reminds me of Colombia.

I just read some of your bad reviews, I had a really beautiful afternoon there, walking, exploring the grounds, taking amazing photos of plants and wildlife and having really amazing ajiiaco soup for lunch, in addition to the coffee tour. So I guess if you run in and out you have a different experience.

“Informative, but WAY overpriced”
Reviewed May 14, 2014

While this coffee tour was informative, it was way overpriced. At 45.000 pesos ($23 US Dollars), we received a cup of espresso, some background information about cofffee, a walk through the coffee fields, a walk through the main house and an optional swim in the pool. They did provide transportation to and from Manizales (30 minutes). They offered lunch for 12.000 pesos ($6 US Dollars) for soup that you can normally buy for 4.000 pesos ($2 US Dollars).

Everything was completely overpriced and the coffee tour of the farm had the landscape that you can see on any bus ride throughout the coffee region. There are other coffee tours just as good for 5-10.000 pesos ($2.50 - $5.00 US Dollars). Don't waste your time or money going here unless you have extra money to blow.

“Overpriced and hyped up...better elsewhere”
Reviewed April 7, 2014

I read reviews and decided to do this tour and was disappointed as I've been on better and paid less. Luckily we had already gone on another, much better tour at a small coffee farm outside of Salento the previous week.

At this place the group was very large, (20+) the nice guide gave us information which you could get off wikipedia, there was no coffee tasting at all, except for an itty bitty taste of their espresso - and not very good at that. They have a good tabletop roaster and roast a few beans while you watch. There was a walk through the growing coffee plants, which wasn't really informative to the tour but does take up time, and crossing a river to get to the processing area, so wear proper foot wear. The tour of the processing area was good. There is a stop at the main hotel / house I suppose to advertise that place.

The tour cost was a high 45,000 pesos per person. Compared to our previous tours and also people we met in the Jardin area who recommended farms there, I would not recommend this place. Find a smaller, more personal farm and you will get a better experience, unless you have strict instructions to follow what the Lonely Planet dictates. The lunch was overpriced and meagre compared to the meals we had elsewhere in the country, I doubt the owners eat that food. We also stayed overnight at the hostel and it is isolated, so if you are looking for a place that has almost no wifi (did not work) and low quality food, stay here. When you stay overnight, the tour charge is supposed to be 35000 for the tour, but they still charged us 45000.

Firstly, thank you so much for your interest in commenting about Hacienda Venecia, with this we can improve every day.

We normaly handle groups not larger than 20, but in some parts of the year we receive a lot of people, some unexpected, we ask people to book for the tour before arriving but it doesn’t always happen.

You can find everything that you want on the web. However, some people prefer to go to a real working coffee farm to learn about coffee and enjoy the interaction with people from all around the world.

We offer to our visitors to drink as much coffee as they want, maybe the guide forgot to ask, but everyone is welcome to ask for more coffee anytime.

People like different things, but many of our visitors have enjoyed the walk through the coffee plantation the most.

The last stop of the coffee tour is at the main house where you can see and feel one of the important elements from the coffee landscape of Colombia and its typical architecture. A house of hundred years old, built with traditional materials and techniques.

Other coffee farms offer different tours with different experiences. We think that we offer a unique tour, and we also think that we have a good quality product. We include transfer to and from Manizales city in the price. We are located in the countryside, so a private transfer is a big part of the cost.

For the guests that stay with us, we offer a free transfer from and to the coffee highway only, and they can take the coffee tour anytime during their stay and it costs $35.000COP. When the guests ask to be picked up in Manizales we charge the normal fee of $45.000COP.

We offer typical food from the region that is our speciality. Everybody on the farm eats the same food, it is part of the experience of being on a real working coffee farm. Regarding the price, the food in the countryside is more expensive than in the city, one of the reasons is the transport of the fresh ingredients. Also, meals at Hacienda Venecia are optional, the visitors and guests can bring their own food if they would prefer.

We have one of the best internet packages available, but as we are in the countryside, sometimes, the internet signal is not always strong.

We are sorry to hear that your visit to Hacienda Venecia didn’t meet with your expectations. Again, we thank you very much indeed for your feedback.

We are always working to enrich our visitor experience.

“Learned a lot, had a great time!”
Reviewed March 10, 2014

It was a very enjoyable two hours, well worth the money if you're into coffee. The host was knowledgeable, friendly and easy to understand. The coffee is amazing! The visit through the actual coffee plants is like being in a corn maze… We had a great time! Hope this review was helpful!!!

“Informative coffee tour”
Reviewed February 23, 2014

The tour was very interesting and we learned a lot about coffee. By tasting and showing us the process but also by a very good guide who teached us a lot about coffee. The surrounding is lovely so bring your camera. The tour price includes a pick up at your hotel and very tasty coffee for free.
