We (a group of 8 of us) stayed at Hotel Venezia and did the coffee tour and even though we're a diverse group we all really enjoyed it. The tour was fun, interactive, really informative and the great views around the farm was a bonus. The staff really went out of their way to look after us during our stay with delicious lunch and helping us visit some hot springs as well. My blog has some photo's and more of our experiences - http://imstillalivemom.wordpress.com/tag/hacienda-venecia/

We went to Parque Nacional del Cafe thinking that we would learn about Colombia's most famous export and were sorely disappointed. Then someone told us about Recuca. It is a little out of the way and you need someone who speaks Spanish to get you there but it is worth the visit.
They treat you very well, make you dress up in traditional coffee gathering clothes (including machete), make you gather some coffee beans, give you a few cups of the delicious coffee and then have lunch. All of my wife's family are Colombian and spoke Spanish, but for me there didn't seem to be anyone who spoke English so I had to rely on my wife to translate. That said this is a really enjoyable half day out. If you want to experience everything about coffee then come here.

We stayed at the Hacienda and did the tour but plenty of people come on a day trip. It costs 35000 and starts at 9am and includes a great coffee. You can also organise private tours. The staff speak great English and even some French. The tour covers all aspects of producing coffee and includes a tour of the beautiful plantation. We can't recommend this highly enough.

If you drink coffee, this tour is for you. If you love coffee, more so. If you wonder how to make your everyday cup of coffee better, the coffee tour in Hacienda Venecia will help.

Our visit to Hacendia Venecia started early morning from Medellin. A four hour drive through picturesque Colombia, through rolling hills, across rural Colombia and over good quality roads brought us to Hacienda Venecia (only the last few kilometers, from bridge to the Hacienda, was unpaved).

The Hacienda is set on a hill side, midst flowers, within coffee farm. The reception is a large finca style house, near a small modern pool, with hotel type and hostel type rooms available for rent.

Upon arrival, we were greeted with smiles and a freshly brewed cup of farm grown coffee, in a room with lots of books and posters about coffee. The coffee tasted amongst the best I have tasted anywhere (I have been to most premium coffee producing regions of the world - Central America, Africa, Asia and pacific islands).

We started with a traditional delicious Colombian lunch. Thereafter, with a private English speaking guide, we began the 2.5-3 hour coffee tour.

The tour included the history of coffee, different types of coffees, how coffee arrived and developed in Colombia, what makes the coffee triangle of Colombia the place to grow the finest coffees, why the Manizales, Periera and Armenia region of Colombia is able to harvest ripe coffee beans all year round (two main harvests, and minor harvests all year round). You learn about flavors, aromas, right temperatures to brew coffee, the art of roasting and grinding coffee, what makes a cup taste bitter or strong or mild, sweet, salty and so on. You learn the role of coffee to the economy and culture of Colombian folks. The guide welcomed questions and discussions.

After discussions, we jumped into a jeep and off we went to drive through the coffee farm - up the hill, down the hill, across water streams. We saw the nursery, then newly planted hill side, the mature farms actively producing coffee, the life cycle of a coffee plant. The active farms had rows upon rows of plants with sweet smelling white flowers. We saw green beans, and ripe red / orange / yellow beans. We tasted the fruit flesh of ripe beans.

The tour included the coffee bean drying process, roasting the dry beans, using the freshly roasted beans to prepare a fresh brew of coffee. That cup tasted so good!!

We were delighted by Hacienda Venecia. After the trip, we shook hands and hugs with the Hacienda team. Then we left for the thermal springs in Manizales area, discussing the coffee tour we had just experienced, treasuring memories and inspiration to experience a better cup of coffee back home in the United States.

You should not leave Manizales without spending a day at the Hacienda Venecia to learn everything about the coffee growing, harvesting, selecting and roasting processes.

Located in a beautiful and peaceful setting, the visit of the farm itself takes the morning and is ran by knowledgeable, multilingual and pleasant guides. Thereafter, you can have (a very good) lunch at the farm and enjoy the swimming pool for the afternoon.

The owner of the farm is an extremely charming person. He really spent a lot of time with us solving a travel issue which we occured to have on that day and provided us with valuable advice for the rest of our trip !

Although we didn't stay there, the hostel and the guest house look great.
