“Good 3 star Highland Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 15, 2010

I've been looking for somewhere to stay on route to the Orkneys and will be coming back here. I thought it was slightly better than your normal 3 star Highland hotel. It has some very good things about it. The staff for a start and very friendly and warm. The breakfast was very good even thou it was under the hot lamps, with the bacon and toast excellent. It is in the heart of some of the Scottish Highlands. It was not that busy considering Inverness is only 20 odd miles away and it was in August.

Stayed for one night with my husband. On our way to the room there were numerous buckets on stairways and corridors. The same buckets were in the same places the next morning when we went for breakfast. Some of the buckets were holding a door open. The bedroom itself was fine, spotlessly clean but noise was a bit of a problem (at least where we were). The place seems to undergoing some rework at present, the receptiom area is very dated. There was about twice when we went to reception and no one was there. On the morning we exited we hand to stand at reception for about 5 minutes before we could pay. One of the cleaning staff had to find someone for us so that we could pay & leave. The breakfast was poor. The food appeared to have been cooked about 2 hours earlier. The tomoatoes served with the breakfast were plum tomatoes from a tin!! The lady who served the food was nice and doing her best but the breakfast really was no great shakes. The stairs are very narrow in some places. Corridors long with numerous turns - Not easy to get to your room or to get your luggage to your room. The internet was unavailable the evening we arrived and was still unavailable the next morning. As I said I think its a work in progress.

We travelled as part of a coach party and stayed 4 nights in the Carrbridge Hotel. First impression on arriving was that the public areas were dark dingy and and run down . Our bedroom (room 412) was one of the modernised ones but even that had faults - constant bad smell in the bathroom, dodgy lock on the bedroom door -not joking- on the third morning we were actually locked in the bedroom and had to call reception to let us out - thank goodness there wasn't a FIRE! -even though we had questioned the reliability of the lock when we first arrived.. Nothing was replenished (toilet rolls facial tissues soap etc.) unless we rang and requested them. On the first night my husbands arm bled slightly on the sheets and the stain was still there when we left. We were positioned directly over the function room where the nightly entertainment was provided. Fortunately it finished around 10.45 to 11 p.m. because you couldn't sleep as there was no sound proofing between floors. We even had to request a handset for the TV.

The food was not good. Black holes in potatoes, rancid butter pats on the table at breakfast, Waiting staff most of whom had obviously never had any formal training.
Our meals were served in one of the function rooms not the hotel dining room, which made me feel like a second class citizen. The feeling amongst the guests there was that coach parties were not really wanted but were tolarated. Incidently I would estimate that during the time I was there coach party guests accounted for at least 95% of people staying there.

Having never been to Scotland before I have no previous experience of Scottish hotels to compare this hotel against. I have travelled extensively to Europe and America and I can say that compared to them this hotel is poor.

Bedrooms were quite "tired" but very clean.
The food was plain "Home Cooking" - Maybe the main hotel menu was better, but as we were with a coach party we had a separate menu and ate in a separate room, which we found rather disappointing!!
The hotel is very well situated for travellingto town (Inverness), country, mountains and many tourist attractions. We would return as "individual" guests for the friendliness of the staff and position of the hotel.

First impressions as we arrived in a steady highland drizzle were not good as the hotel appeared elderly and there were already two coaches parked outside. However our party were dealt with quickly and efficiently and within minutes we had been allocated a room. The room was a fair size, simply decorated and clean. The beds were comfortable and the room had controllable heating. The bathroom which included a shower was again clean and fit for purpose. Dark tartan carpet in the main part of the hotel gives it a somewhat drab appearance but this is obviously a question of taste and all the public areas were clean and well furnished. We eat in a large communal hall ' The Highlander Suite ' and found the three course meals, with a choice more than adequate, as was the buffet breakfast. The staff many of them teenagers were attentive, pleasant and hardworking. At one point they were catering for ' four coach parties' We did not book this hotel directly but came with a coach trip and were more than satisfied. Entertainment was provided each night. The hotel obviously often caters for coach parties and aims to provide a good basic level of service and succeeds

i travelled up with a coach company and i have to say i really am impressed.

I have been in Scotland before but this is by far the best hotel i have stayed in. The service was perfect, my room was spacious and clean.

The hotel is in a perfect location for places we visited and the views really are lovely.

I will be coming back again!!

Opinion about this hotel seems to depend on which bedroom you are allocated and the number of coach parties. Our own experience was of a drab, dark and slightly dirty bedroom with barely adequate facilities. The public areas are reasonable but in need of refurbishment and the main dining area is soulless.

Staff were generally friendly and helpful, but were completely overwhelmed at mealtimes on one occasion, having to deal with five coachloads of guests. The hotel is well located for touring in this area but badly needs updating.
