“A wee gem with good pub food and really friendly service”
Reviewed September 13, 2011

After a wet and bike ride we went to the cairn for a bar meal, the place was busy for a Tuesday night. On entering all muddy and wet we were greeted and taken to a table in the dining room, there was no issues with the state of us and the host even joined in with our banter about the local trails. We ordered steaks and one other had stew, you could fault it, value for money and not the usual pub food crap you get. If you want a friendly well run pub then this is the place for food and excellent service!

My husband and I booked this hotel break through hotels.com and got a very good Bed and Breakfast rate. We had been back to my hometown of Aberdeen for a reunion and our friends had offered to watch our two boys in order for us to get a couple of nights away on our own. As we had to head back down to Yorkshire we wanted something not too far from Aberdeen but far enough to have some different places to see.

The owner is a lovely guy who makes you feel very welcome. The rooms although basic are nice and clean with the beds being very comfortable. We did have a problem with our shower but as it was new it was to be fixed once we left which I am sure did happen. We didnt actually choose to eat there at night and that is I am afraid due to the above mentioned pool table in middle of lounge bar. When we first entered I must say we were a bit shocked as previous reports had not mentioned this! (perhaps it is a new and hopefully temporary addition??). Although you dont actually eat in this bar/lounge area but through in the sun lounge/restaraunt, this pool table actually put us off sitting in the bar ( before we got to the Cairn we had planned to eat and drink in the hotel at least one night of our two night break). Although it was mainly locals playing the pool it did not make it a very nice relaxing place to sit and have a drink therefore we ended up going out both nights to Aviemore for meals and drinks. This was a pity as the freshly cooked Scottish Breakfast was amongst the best we have had and we have stayed at some really nice hotels so I am sure the food on offer in an evening was equally good.

Please do not think this is a negative review because it is most definitely not. It is a nice little hotel that is very fairly priced with lovely owners and as far as we could see lovely food. And I must say it kinda grows on you as by the end we were really quite fond of the place, warts and all(even had a nightcap in lounge bar our last night). We would go back and would highly recommend but as we have said..perhaps the removal of the pool table would be the clincher??

What a great place this is -- the perfect base to explore the idyllic Cairngorm countryside, and to visit the neighboring towns and villages. We stayed with friends for two nights and we will definitely be coming back. The hotel has clean rooms, comfortable beds, excellent food, and at a reasonable price. It also has it's own adjacent country pub where you can enjoy a fine selection of well-kept cask ales next to a crackling open fire. Bliss!

I would recommend this family run B&B to anyone and everyone. I stayed here in the first week of June with my co-worker and his wife. When we first arrived we were greeted by Gareth the owner, who was very friendly and welcoming. We got directed to our rooms which were nice and clean and well presented. Headed down for dinner and was blown away. Throughout my 4 days stay here, there has been nothing that I can mark this down with. Beautiful village, cracking staff and amazing price. Even the residents from the Carrbridge hotel came down here for their last night as the had no hot water and the restaurant serving hours were only 6-7.30!! Nothing like that here, the staff and Gareth (hotel owner) in particular, would bend over backwards to ensure that you are happy and fully catered for. I would most definately come back here again, this time without work commitment and enjoy some more of the beautiful scenery and woodland walks and ofcourse the cracking service!

Further to this, there is adequate car parking, if not in the hotel car park, round the corner (1 1/2 min walk) in the large car park for nearby park and football field. (car and coach bays available)

Room Tip: Try the steak and ale pie! Just enjoy yourself!

A fantastic and pictureque place. The staff, the owner and his wife are so friendly.
The room was superb and clean. Stayed for three nights and very accommodating around breakfast time. Evening meals and presentation fantastic. Well worth every penny. We will be back!
A wonderful place to sit and do work. Many walks available locally. Free internet and parking available.

Stayed one night on return trip from highlands. Room was spotless and comfortable. Staff and management friendly and efficient. This was the only hotel on the trip where we were taken to our room. Safe private car park with additional carparking at door for loading/unloading cases etc. Good quality Scottish breakfast served in hotel restaurant.
We ate dinner in the adjoining public bar and this was well cooked and served by efficient staff. Friendly bar with log fire and great atmosphere. This is now the only hotel we will use when holidaying in this area or passing through on tour.

Four of us stayed here for one night as part of our LEJOG trip, in two twin rooms.

Gareth, our host, was happy to store our bikes safely in the front room.

We ate outside in the sunshine ( excellent pasta with smoked fish , with apple crumble to follow), while enjoy a few pints of the local real ale ( this was one of only two pubs we found on our trip that had decent real ale.)

Breakfast was excellent and they were happy to make porridge on request (always a good start to a hard day's cycling)
