Stayed at The Highwayman Inn, Shepton Mallet this last weekend (29 Jun/1 Jul 2012), with a colleague from work, as we were attending a show at the Bath & West Showground. Room rates were very favourable and the hotel is not far away from the showground.
The couple, who have owned the hotel and restaurant for the last three months, were very welcoming and friendly. They were a great help when I arrived, having to check in, leave my holdall and dash back to the taxi to get to the showground.
When I came back a few hours later my holdall had been taken to my room and I was shown to it by the owner and the features were pointed out.
Down in the bar - all the staff were friendly and easy to chat too. There is a restaurant menu and there is also a bar menu. A lot to choose from on both.
The evening meal came in large portions, looked good, tasted even better and was very reasonably priced. I started with whitebait and salad, followed by lamb shank. My colleague had soup of the day followed by the 8oz steak, chips and salad. The two meals with several drinks from the bar came to just slightly over £43. Very reasonable. My colleague felt guilty for not finishing his main course on both nights!
Breakfast: - you had a choice of cereals, juice with tea/coffee, helped yourself to toast and an English breakfast was cooked on request. A large plateful, hot and tasty. On both days I didn't need to eat lunch because I had been so well fed.
I was very sorry to leave on Sunday morning. Sheila and her husband (apologies I forgot your name) were there to see us on our way.
I am hoping that our company will let us go back to the Bath & South West showground next year so that I can stay at this hotel again.
I usually travel solo and I would be very happy to stay here on a leisure trip not just for business. So hopefully in the future will be able to come back and do some walking in the lovely countryside which surrounds the hotel. It is on the outskirts of Shepton Mallet proper not far from Castle Cary, Glastonbury, etc and the hotel has lots of details of what to do if you want to be a typical tourist.

Stayed one night as only hotel rooms available during week of a local show. The car park set the tone for the rest of the stay...dark, weeds everywhere, a pile of rubbish, unwelcoming. The food from the carvery was awful and semed to have been there all day. The room was basic (e.g. no where to hang clothes)and noisy from the road outside.
Breakfast was full english or scrambled egg..."we don't do poached eggs" we were told.
A funny set up with the breakfast coffee with a flask and instant coffee granules from sachets? Why?
All in all not great and not worth £50.00. ........£25.00 maybe.

Charmless hotel that is simply a room for the night, if you need to be in the area.
To be fair, the rooms are well maintained, and clean.

The breakfast is pretty poor, with pre cooked then microwaved food, do it yourself cups of tea from a village hall type tea boiler, and DIY toast.

All in all, not worth a penny more than £25

The new management made our stay very enjoyable. Good friendly service. Great food - big portions! Very clean and comfortable. Best room rate in area. Excellent location for Longleat and Cheddar Gorge. Recommended.

We have just returned from a 2 night stay at the Highwayman Inn and cannot believe it is the same one as described on here. We were warmly welcomed by a staff member and shown to our room which was very clean and welcoming (we had asked for a walk in shower and was given one). There was an information pack in the room which was helpful. We mentioned to the owner that the room was not very warm and he immediately sorted the problem out (someone had turned the heating off in our room). We ate in the bar that evening and the food was adequate for the price paid although the menu was not extensive. For breakfast there was orange juice, cereal and tea/coffee on a "serve yourself basis". We were offered a full english or "something lighter". We both had the full english which was very good and was told to help ourselves to toast (two 4 slice toasters and bread were provided). The second day my husband asked for scrambled eggs and bacon and was given a generous amount. The only critisms we have is 1) yes the owner could be a little "warmer" and the price of cola mixer (£1.50 per shot). Not long ago we stayed in a hotel in Kensington and the Highwayman was a lot better and a lot cheaper than that one.

Room Tip: we stayed in the annex

Everything the earlier reviewers have said is true,no exaggeration the atmosphere is frosty, the breakfast was burned ,only small window for breakfast7-8.30. There was no orange juice for breakfast, tea was weak, long life milk,no spread offered, toast was dried up crust. The car park is dark, huge and empty. We were given a groud floor, disabled room without checking with us ,there was faecal waste on the toilet seat and ants in the shower area. We were really glad that we didn't have an evening meal, Oh and they take payment from your account two days before your arrival
