“A exceptional pleasure.”
Reviewed April 29, 2013

I wanted to share my wonderful experience at Maplestone, Shepton Mallet where I stayed with my partner last week, the 22nd & 23rd April. We were the guests of Donald & Gill Sinclair and I must say that of the many Home-stays, B&B's and small scale hotels I have stayed in, this has to be one of the best. Don & Gill were excellent because they were neither too obtrusive or lacking in any attention. I think this is a rare quality and certainly much appreciated by us. Maplestone, their cosy home (once a textile factory when The Quarr, where Maplestone is situated), was settled by immigrant Huguenots escaping the violent prejudices of Louis the XIVth in the 17th Century, all engaged in the fabric, dying and textile industry, at the heart of old Shepton Mallet. We were made very welcome. Its a great jump-off place for many interesting sites and festivals in the Bath-Bristol-Avon triangle. The amenities were perfect: clean comfortable rooms, shower rooms immaculate, oodles of hot water, WiFi connections - and the breakfasts were great and I mean that in both senses of the word! We wanted for nothing but never felt CLUTTERED. I HATE clutter! Small rooms filled with too many things so that you can barely move! These were generous rooms. I shall certainly return to Maplestone and would recommend it without hesitation.

Room Tip: Ask Don & Gill for the room at the end of the house. It has a separate entrance and is very priv...

We have just stayed for 4 nights in the cottage. It was immaculately clean, warm and had good quality bed linen. We liked the additional space this gave us, with a small kitchen area, complete with fridge and microwave, and a small lounge area. The shower room was a good size and has a simple but effective shower. Breakfast was good, especially the yoghurt and honey!. Donald was just right as a host - friendly, but not over the top! Area is good for travelling to the many attractions close by, although Shepton itself is a bit tired.

Room Tip: We liked having our own small cottage, and cannot comment on the other rooms available.

They certainly got the basics right - good sized clean room, hot water, comfortable bed, warm(ish) room (but see below), well cooked breakfast (but see below). But, there were several niggles:

1 We visited during a cold spell in March with overnight frosts. The heating was on during the day, but switched off at night and not switched on again until 7.00 am - not early enough to have a reasonably warm room to get up. Also on the days when the other rooms were occupied, the heating was noticeably lower - probably the boiler is too small to cope with a full house.

2 Cooked breakfast was well prepared, but a bit on the "small" side - one egg, two small mushrooms, two cherry tomatoes and a couple of hash browns. This was supposed to be a "full vegetarian breakfast" Obviously they have nver heard of vegetarian sausage! The hash browns had run out for a day or two, and Bird's Eye potato waffles were substituted - I thought those went out thirty years ago!

3 Three towels for two people were not changed during our four day stay.

4 We booked the room with the external steps. Whilst the steps did carry something of a warning on the web-site, it was certainly not enough to prepare us for a hair-raising first trip up them in the dark. Basically very steep, too narrow to carry luggage, and hewn into a rockface. A much more explicit warning is called for!

5 The place is difficult to find (for those of us who have not succumbed to satnav!), and more explicit directions are needed on the website.

6 Parking is far from easy- restricted space with stone walls all around. Seemingly, it could be made a lot easier by knocking down a couple of walls at the entry to the drive.

Admittedly when we arrived we were asked to let them know if we had any problems - but who likes to be branded a complainant!?

The Maplestone B&B was a lovely building. Gill and Donald are fantastic hosts and run the B&B brilliantly. The room was perfect, warm, clean and comfy. I would definitely be going back there in the future.

What a great welcome by Donald, you just have to come back to it. No question too much or forced, they really care about their guests. Wonderful breakfast, thanks Gill!
Good place to explore, and to drive to bath.

My only tip when going to bath, the Park and ride is a good alternative to finding a spot yourself, however we found it very cold to wait for a bus at rush hour ( Saturday, 11am, with Christmas market) we should have known;)

We booked this B&B at short notice after looking at the Internet following flights from another trip being cancelled.

We stayed for 3 nights in the cottage part of Maplestone.
The accommodation was spacious, clean and well decorated.
The location is fantastic, close to some good resturants and surrounding villages, towns and sites.
The breakfast was excellent every day.
The owners / hosts could not have been more helpful and pleasant.

Would highly recommend this B&B and would have no hesitation staying at Maplestone again when in the area.

Unusually, my husband did this booking, having used TA reviews in the first place. Normally it's all left to me! I was really pleased with his choice. We booked well in advance, for a 5 night stay, as we were attending the Momentum conference at the Royal Bath & West showground. This property was perfectly situated, to make our coming and going easy - especially as we had time constraints.

The room was to the rear of the property, in an extended section, accessed up steep, stone steps with a bend - this wouldn't be suitable for anyone with mobility issues. However, the room was quiet, with an ensuite, generous proportions and afforded an interesting view of the old buildings in the immediate vicinity. Lovely power shower, of good size. Good quality sleep, in a very quiet environment.

The breakfast was very good; and there was a plenty of choice available.

Would certainly consider returning.
