“Almost very good”
Reviewed September 21, 2013 via mobile

This could be great. Lets start with the bad stuff. We arrived after a long and tiring journey at abut 3.15. We asked if the bar was open for refreshments and were told no it opened at 6 pm. We were directed to an organic farm shop just up the main road which closed at 4 pm. How difficult would it have been to say the bar is closed but since you are staying can I offer you a drink of some sort. The breakfast was frankly mean. I ordered poached egg and bacon. Well I got what I ordered one poached egg and one slice of bacon. It was mean two slices of bacon or maybe two eggs would have been good.

Now the good stuff the room had been refurbished to a high standard. The bed was very comfortable and the pillows great. We had dinner which in my case was prawn cocktail followed by cottage pie. Honest well cooked and very enjoyable. Would I stat again yes probably but a little attention to detail would have made it so much better.

Three of us stayed two nights in the Saxon Inn and dined there both nights.
The rooms were certainly not large but were comfortable and perfectly adequate. Nice ensuite bathrooms.
The breakfasts and evening meals were just the job.
The couple running the place were most welcoming and helpful.
In short, our stay was most pleasant and we would have no hesitation in recommending the Saxon Inn.

This was an extremely pleasant stay with very friendly personal service. Traditional pub atmosphere serving good quality food - try the Mediterranean Rissotto -excellent !
Breakfast very good, the one downside, and we were advised by the owners beforehand, was that the double bed in our room was a bit on the small side.

My wife and I have just spent a very enjoyable 5 nights at this very fine hostelry, set in a only what can be described as a very quaint Dorset village. The hosts are most welcoming, & the accomodation is first class, as is the food, fine ales, & general atmosphere of the pub & it,s surroundings. We shall most definitely be returning, as it is an ideal base for exploring all that this lovely County has to offer.

Lovely rooms in a secluded Inn in a perfect Rural setting.
Peter and Helen, run a relaxing and totally enjoyable establishment.
The food is freshly prepared and the Menu very comprehensive and extremely tasty.
It was lovely to chat with the locals and feel so at home

Room Tip: Only 4 rooms ,so book early, studwork walls,so you rely on your fellow guests to be reasonably quiet

Child Okeford is a typical Dorset village with one shop, an organic farm shop with cafe and two pubs. Peaceful in the evenings it is pleasant to wander around the village lanes but take a torch if you are staying during winter months as there are no street lights.

We stayed at the Inn for two nights as we prefer to stay at pubs with rooms these days than hotel chains. We enjoy their individuality and atmosphere. The Saxon Inn is not one of the newly styled boutique pubs or a restaurant with rooms. It is a traditional pub frequented by local residents as well as guests. The restaurant was busy on both nights of our stay.

On arrival be careful not to turn into the driveway of the Inn's neighbour on the left hand side. It is an easy mistake to make especially on your first visit.

We arrived around 4 p.m. before the Inn was open for business. Following the instructions to press the rear door bell we were answered immediately by Helen, one of the owners. The Inn has four rooms, ours being number 4, a double bed room with en suite bathroom with shower over the corner bath on the left hand side of the hotel. Helen said that they had recently put a summer weight quilt on the bed but if we were cold they would happily replace it with a winter weight version. The room had matching light oak wardrobe, dressing table, chest of drawers and bed side tables. Compared to chain hotels perhaps we had too much storage space. There was a hostess tray with the offer of fresh milk should we prefer. Requesting decaffeinated coffee we were given a jar from the kitchen instead of the usual sachets.

The large bathroom was spotlessly clean, as was the bedroom, with quality towels. Toiletries were provided in large pump action bottles. Hot water was plentiful although the shower head was a little low for my husband who is over six feet tall.

Travelling on a Sunday we had a traditional roast on our way to Child Okeford, this was a mistake we would have had a better dinner at the Saxon Inn. On our second evening we had our evening meal in the bar, a wonderful vegetable curry with popadoms and mango chutney. Breakfast on both mornings was included in our room rate. My husband had a 'bacon butty' on the first morning and scrambled eggs on toast on the second, both were superbly cooked. Not normally a fan of cooked breakfasts I was tempted to have poached eggs on the second morning.

The Inn carries an interesting range of real ales which are changed frequently which my other half enjoyed.

After checking out we discovered we had accidentally taken our room key with us. Returning to the Inn as we were still in the area we decided to have lunch there. Our jacket potato was just as good as our meal the evening before.

The owners are very much in evidence. Helen and Peter are pleasant and welcoming. Peter even potted up a plant cutting for me when I asked him if he had a plastic bag I could use to keep it alive until I got home.

I would recommend the Saxon Inn to anyone. If I had a suggestion it would be to put blackout blinds up in the bedrooms.
