“You gotta see he charm ;-)”
Reviewed September 12, 2012

This is a nice but little bit worn out hotel. It is probably as old as the manager, who is an old man who speaks reasonably good English and is very welcoming and eager to please. He apologised for the honking cars of celebrating Georgian youngsters, which were driving through the streets one night and even gave me a free cd about Artvin when I left :-) It also wasn't very clean, but clean enough for me. It just all goes with this area of Turkey and I could definitely see the charm. I arrived during a weekend and found the hotel almost empty. Stayed there for 3 nights to explore the surrounding area.
There is a small free parking space behind the hotel, which is impossible to reach when the nearby mosque empties...

We had hoped to stay in the hotel we had stayed in before in Artvin, but it was full. So we reluctantly chose the Karahan and were pleasantly surprised. The bottom floor entrance is horrid and you think you are entering a flea bag. But the lobby was fine and the room was even better. Comfortable and clean beds, clean bathroom, free wifi, TV and very helpful staff. Nice buffet breakfast overlooking the countryside and Artvin. This is not a charming hotel but it had everything we wanted and is located right in the middle of everything. Artvin is a sort of backwater place, but we really like it - authentic and friendly.

This hotel is quite large and has interesting views from the bedrooms.Which are spacious and comfortable. There is not a lot to see in Artvin but it is an interesting town as all the buildings are built on very sloping ground. Good for a one night stop.

When we arrived, the parking area around the back entrance was completely full of cars and people, so we had to park along a city street a couple blocks away (this was evidently unusual and may have been related to Ramadan attendance at the adjacent mosque). The hotel receptionist was friendly enough, although since we were apparently the only visitors he did not have very much to do. The hotel was a little dark, but the room was clean and pleasant. and we had a decent view across to the steep slopes of the mountains. The breakfast was adequate/average. It was certainly adequate, but there was nothing about the hotel that encouraged lesiurely visiting. But I would definitely recommend it for a reliable stopover, especially for one night--just be aware the the roads leading up from the river-crossing are a bit steep, narrow, and winding!

The hotel Karahan was impeccable. I had a problem with the bathroom light and it was fixed immediately. Mr. Karahan was very friendly and helpful. When I told him how angry I was to see that the nearby Georgian church was being used by the cows he phoned someone to complain. How could have he kept that hotel going for so many years if it had been full of bedbugs and foul smells? And why doesn't he give his full name? I'm willing to give mine if anybody doubts me!

We had a very good time in Karahan hotel. The owner is a erudite and friendly person who speaks very good english, a respite in eastern Turkey. The breakfast on the great balcony was very good, the servants were friendly and helpful. The rooms are clean with good beds. From our room we had a nice view on the surrounding moumtains The use of wood everywhere in the hotel makes a warm atmosphere
The hotel is situated in the centre of the town. Parking just beside the hotel.
Keep in mind that you are here in a poor region, in that way Karahan is the best hotel.

we stayed here as it was supposed to be the best hotel possible in Artvin. City in itself did not seem us very attractive, but the nature around it is beautiful. The hotel has small free car park at the back, indicated from the main street, so that was easy. We had booked in advance and were shown two rooms. In the morning they tried to charge however different price as apparently we had chosen a suite type of room. In the end they apologised. Spoke a bit of English. Dark and old hotel, in line with our perception of the city, to be done as a stopover place only. Breakfast in the morning was the basic one, but could be taken on terrace above the main street with some reasonable nice view on the horizon and valleys/hills around it. They were reasonably helpful inquiring if there were any problems in the evening. Room furniture and bathroom were worn out, but still not medium priced hotel I thought (110 TRY for us with 2 kids).
