“Good value on the edge of The Hague.”
Reviewed July 16, 2012

We stayed for a couple of nights and were delighted with the room (410), the breakfast which we had at around 1030 on the Sunday (very accommodating!), and the staff who were efficient and friendly. Competitive price and relaxed atmosphere. No, it's not 5 star, but it's welcoming and comfortable.

We needed somewhere to stay on a weekend visit to friends in Voorschoten and chose this hotel. We got a "comfort room", which was on the top floor under the roof . Even so it was spacious, with lots of light and a really nice modern bathroom- with both an overhead shower and a telephone style shower. The room price was reasonable- €115 per night including breakfast, which was excellent- a full choice hot and cold buffet - and could be eaten indoors or on the terrace, if weather was good. It should be noted that most rooms are in a separate building from the reception- if you are unlucky, you may have to walk 500 metres to your room. Reception staff were pleasant although quality of service varied considerably from person to person-they were all very young.

Initially impressed with the reception area, which is modern and inviting, I was disappointed once I went further. The corridor to my "Deluxe" room was dark, smelled stale, and had stains all over the carpet.
The so called "Deluxe" room was, in fact, an old tired room with a new TV and big bath. The "view" that was advertised was of a main road, the roof, and the chimney from the restaurant... and the door to the balcony did not open to allow access, or close tightly to keep out the noise from the road. When I reported this to reception I was told that they would fix it the next day.
When I arrived back the next day this problem had not been addressed.
The reception staff would also do well to remember the art of smiling and making customers feel welcome and not like they are an inconvenience.
I checked out after 2 days and moved to another hotel.
Having stayed in many Van Der Valk hotels previously, I was expecting the usual high standards, unfortunately this hotel lets down the chain.
I will not stay here again.

If you're feeling slightly blue, stay out of this hotel as you will leave positively suicidal. I checked in and was given a room with poo stains in the toilet, the entire room was sticky, and nothing worked properly. The staff are from another planet where the concept of guest services or hospitality are a foreign concept. My fellow guests were comprised of the nearly dead. Eating in the dinning room was like a visit to God's waiting room. Horror films would do well using this as a location as the ghouls and the eery surroundings would require no casting or propping. I dare you to stay here.

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel

Stayed here recently on business as i have done previously, the rooms depending on location in the hotel can look tired or very modern. In both cases are the rooms comfortable and clean, the two essential points to any hotel stay. The bathroom was similarly well sized and fully equipped.

Breakfast was the only slight let down, when i arrived the warm was fully gone and the replenishment rate seemed to be not keeping up with demand, what makes up for this slight disappointment were the fantastic dinners i had in the hotel during my stay. Well portioned and really tasty.

Hotel bar is friendly and welcoming, WiFi is free in the bar / main area of the hotel but unfortunately not in the rooms unless you pay for a hotspot...when will hotels learn that a small investment on their part will pay off in the long term!?!

Room Tip: All rooms appear to be located in a seperate building to the main hotel complex. I never managed to...

Staff neglected to charge the credit card I provided upon check-in and check-out, though they assured me payment was secured. Weeks later the sales dept threatened legal action for "non-payment". On top of the archaic understanding of hospitality, service and technology, they overcharged me for the number of room nights I actually stayed, and would not even acknowledge the numerous emails I sent attempting to explain their mistake. I was either to pay 800 Euro beyond what I owed, or be forced into a long legal battle that would inevitably damage my credit. This was simply an act of extortion that I had no choice but to give in to. Short of calling the staff and management criminal... they certainly have no business dealing with the public... or computers, or numbers, or telephones, or food, or elevators (a comically huge number of mechanical malfunctions occurred during my stay). The rooms were fine... aside from the perpetually sticky light switches (and I don't mean the switch was difficult to switch on and off, I mean the surfaces of ALL switches were covered in a thick layer of mystery goo) and the lack of wireless internet (which I was also charged for). The hotel motto should be "Like The Shining without the intrigue". One last observation. I once heard a member of the restaurant staff call a guest who asked where her room was, a "(reviews do not allow profanity)". - Enjoy your stay

Room Tip: I'd advise you not to be picky with the front desk staff. Once they decide they don't like...
