“Peaceful and in natural surrounding”
Reviewed December 19, 2012

I like the resort very much. Away from maddening crowd located in very much natural surrounding.
Food is excellent. Service is reasonable. No pollution. People are helpful. Breakfast was nice and ample choice from juice to main coarse. Huge property for walking and other activities.

Room Tip: Cottage and in first floor rooms.

The little city (yes they have city rights) of Ootmarsum is a hidden gem. The center has been beautifully restored, there are lots and lots of cafés and restaurants, and you feel the vibration in the air: this is a fantastic place to spend a few days of quiet and enjoyment. It is a bit away from the trodden paths, but for people on their way to Northern Germany or Scandinavia should make it a point of stopping there (it is only 15 km or so from the Dutch/German border of Denekamp/Nordhorn).
Hotel De Wiemsel is set in a large property outside the city. It is large and spacious, and so are the rooms and the bathrooms. The reception and the service are discreet and efficient. An excellent breakfast is served in the spacious dining room or in the conservatory.
There is also a large indoor swimming pool annex sauna. We went there in autumn, but I can imagine that in summer it must be much better even.
There is ample attention to detail: one that I enjoyed partifcularly: the towels in the swimming pool area were delicious...
I'll give a separate review on the restaurant.

We went there because of their fine kitchen and relowned accomodations

The restaurant was warmly decorated yet it felt somewhat old.
The wines were expensive as are the menu's.

As a starter we had samon. It had little taste specially for a star restaurant. Lucky for us there was trufflebutter and nice bread on the table ti counter the lack of taste.

The bouillon was lovely n strong no complaints there

The tuna lacked taste and was over cooked thus loosing even more appeal.
Also the ravioli we were served was just as dissapointing. Most of the following dishes werent up to a one star restaurant

Restaurant used to be good but its definatly on the way down, as a few old guests confirmed to eachother while we were there.

There are way better restaurants out there with fresh new ideas on food.

Breakfast was very nice with plenty of fruit. Bacon eggs saucages etc the regular.

The swimming pool was clean as were the sauna/ relax areas.

Stad was friendly and helpfull and the surrounding area is a picture.

I urge the management to get their act together and change the rooms in the main building to the standard one expects in a decent hotel.

I burned my hand in the room because the water was too hot. Its not safe for kids ( in the rooms 45-46-49... In the main building. )

I just can confirm all the good reviews on the Wiemsel.
We had a perfect stay with my children and grand children. All of us where sad to leave this place.
Very nice rooms, beautiful swimming pools ( inside and outdoors) , sauna etc. Tennis court and bicycles to rent. And the restaurant ( michelin star) up to that level. Service very friendly also towards the grandchildren ( 10 and 8 years old) who liked the jumping facility a lot. And all of it in a nice rustic location ideal for walking and a visit of the beautiful village of Ootmarssum.
It could not have been better!

I stayed at this hotel for just one night (business), but I give it a solid 4/5 rating. The property is gorgeous, rustic, and almost rural. The hotel is proportioned on almost a grand scale: the hallways could have been in a castle; my room was bigger than most 1 bed apartments.

I had room service and it was brought promptly, served properly, and was quite good. The breakfast buffet gets an "A" for presentation and a "B-" for quality/variety. Still...it was more than adequate.

In general, the staff is young, helpful, and polite; the guests are older and very relaxed. This hotel has abundant facilities (spa, sauna, pool, etc.) but I didn't use them. I would have liked airco or a fan, but the windows really open---all the way, so I could sleep with fresh air, always a plus in my mind.

This is a destination hotel and I would like to come back again. I think it would be a good place for married couples (as the older guests here look happy with one another); maybe not so much for lovers.

Room Tip: As there is no lift, I'd ask for a room on the ground floor next time. I booked late and could...

I can't remember how many times we have been at De Wiemsel. Over the years the atmosphere, the competent staff, the Michelin-starred restaurant De Wanne all contribute to keep their customers. These appear to be mainly distinguished and quiet Dutch people. Add to the hotel the great landscapes of Twenthe, the art village of Ootmarsum and you'll likely become an addict.
For those interested, there is a luxurious (and rather expensive) beauty farm attached to the hotel. The individual appartments (I can't call them "rooms") offer all comfort and both the maître d'hotel and Sofien, the Tunesian sommelier do everything to enhance the cook's art.
I can't wait to return.

Room Tip: As far as we have experienced all rooms are the same type of ground floor appartments with a private...
