“A delicious meal, slow service and the coffee is still substandard”

We visited "Huis te Zaanen" for the third time already, because we have found that the food served is superb, obviously prepared by a dedicated kitchen staff. Armed with a discounted voucher we went again to Wormerveer for a fantastic meal. We were not disappointed. Discounted voucher means a limited choice, but within this limited choice there was enough variety to please both of us. Starting with a delicious steak tartare, followed by a leak soup and a fine pork dish, the evening could not go wrong. What could be improved was the service of the staff; the service was friendly and dedicated, but a bit slow. I must add, that Huis te Zaanen had a full house this evening, so maybe the kitchen staff had to sequence the output carefully. Furthermore, the coffee served hadn't the standard of the food; it was almost tasteless. Getting an excellent espresso in the Netherlands is almost impossible, but even then, the coffee served in Huis te Zaanen is even below Dutch standards. Room for improvement. But having said that, I am already looking forward to my next visit at Huis te Zaanen.

Located at the Zaanweg in Wormerveer is restaurant "Huis te Zaanen". The restaurant is located in a prestigious building looking over the river "Zaan" across the road. The building houses also a hotel, bearing the same name. As the Zaanweg is also a main shopping street of Wormerveer, you have to find a parking spot along the road; you have to pay for parking until 6 p.m, later than 6 p.m. parking is free. Except for the Thursday evening (shopping evening) then you have to pay until 9 p.m! When we entered the building, we stepped right into a big party with no restaurant staff or hotel staff immediately in sight. As the entrance of the establishment is a bit cramped, we felt a bit lost. After a while we succeeded in attracting the attention of a member of the staff who was catering the party. She guided us to the part of the building where the restaurant is located. (Far away from the din of the party). After this stormy start things looked up. We were allocated a quiet table in a niche. As the restaurant filled up during the evening this was much appreciated by us. The restaurant has an "old world" atmosphere. During the evening the service was polite and attentive. The entreé, pastrami carpaccio, was excellent with the different flavors perfectly balanced; followed by a smooth cream of tomato soup. The main course, grilled salmon, melted in the mouth, and the dessert, ricotta cake was a worthy finish. However, despite my 5 point rating, the following footnotes are justified. Firstly, just as in most Dutch restaurants, no proper espresso coffee is served. What you get is black coffee in a smaller cup. Furthermore, the menu prices of "Huis te Zaanen" are of the traditional Dutch "sky high" variety". I had obtained a discounted voucher on an Internet auction site, but if I had had to pay full price, that would have given me pause. Conclusion: High marks for food and service, a lower mark for value.
