“As hostels go, it's pretty good”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 24, 2013

We stayed here during a bike tour of the Netherlands; I booked a 2 bed private room for €65/night, which is a bit on the high side for a hostel, but on the whole not too bad. It's a hostel, so the decor is a bit institutional, but it was clean, comfortable, and the room was a decent size, with a big window facing the front of the building, so the room stayed quite airy.

The breakfast was basic (bread, deli meats, cheese, fruit, cereal) but plentiful and included in the price, which made it decent value (cyclists eat A LOT!). The coffee was decent, and they had some Dutch specialities (ontbijkoek, hagelslag). It would have been nice if there were toasters in the breakfast room or some hot dishes like scrambled eggs.

The hostel is a short walk from Den Burg, and convenient for the ferry and the Texel Brewery. Staff were friendly and helpful. We didn't have any problems with noisy guests, most of the other guests seemed to be young families. The wifi was a bit unreliable during our stay, which was a bit annoying - there are 2 computers in the lounge, but they're pretty knackered. There's a covered bike shed where you can lock your bike which was important to us, but the door is often open even though it's supposed to be keycard entry. There's also a small bar on site that had the local beer on tap, which was lovely!

On the whole, I'd be happy to stay here again - it's not a 4* hotel, but it's clean, it had everything you need, and it's not expensive. What more do you need?

You don’t get what you pay for. Even though we booked beds in a 4-bedded room, we were given beds in a 6-bedded room along with the explanation that this is a normal practice and otherwise we should have opted for a private room.

Rude, unfriendly, indifferent, uninformed staff. Instead of solving problems and negotiating with the clients, their solution was to blame and accuse the clients.

In the night, you can expect groups of schoolkids running and shouting in the hallway and banging on your door, without the staff doing anything to ensure that other guests would not be disturbed.

All in all, unwelcoming and unpleasant atmosphere.

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time back then to write us a review. We know this response is awfully late, but we are hoping to welcome you once again. In the last couple of years we have made quite some transformations and hope to be that friendly hostel you once thought us to be. See you soon?!

Warm regards, Team Stayokay Texel

I paid around 65 euro's for 2 nights in a 6-bed-dorm, which is way too much for the quality you get. Imagine: 6 people staying in this dorm, each paying 32 euro's a night, making it 192 euro (?!) per room per night.
The room itself is rather small. There is 1 small bathroom (toilet is in the bathroom) connected to the room/inside the room.
Breakfast was quite alright.

Hi,

Thank you for taking the time back then to write us a review. The rate of our dorm is quite sensitive to high and low season. That might have been what happened. We do accept the hostelling international card as well. Although we know this response might be crazy late, we hope you consider to come to Texel once again. That we may welcome you another time to hopefully show you that we have a improved a lot the last couple of years.

Warm regards, Team Stayokay Texel

Room is pretty comfortable, clean and easy to reach.
It was in low season; there still were many people (mostly families) staying there.
You'd better check or confirm your room in advance, because you could be given a wrong room that you ask for. You can also rent bike there, it is not so easy to find your bike in the bike storehouse though. Some bikes are dusty.

The hostel is located in Den Burg, the largest village on Texel Island. That makes it easy to get to from the ferry, and shops are nearby. Unfortunately, the beach is quite far, but there are regular buses.
The hostel is brand new, and rooms are very clean, and designed with an eye for detail (hangers in the shower, individual reading lights etc). Objectively speaking it has everything you'd want in a hostel: spacious rooms, clean and good showers, large common room, internet, easy to get to etc. But is has no charm - it looks extremely corporate, and mainly designed to house large groups of visitors (eg school groups). Breakfast is OK, but without inspiration. Also, and I frequently wondered about this, stayokay is relatively expensive - how comes a hostel in the Netherlands is considerably more expensive than those in an expensive country such as Switzerland.

If you plan on visiting Texel for 1 or 2 days, it is a good option. If you plan to stay longer, try booking a holiday cottage somewhere else. But it does look like a good place to stay for families with small children.

Hi,

Thank you for making time already so long ago from now to write us a review. Although it is 7 years later we would still like to give a response. Cause it might have taken some time, but now there is definitely charm. At least, we hope so. In case you will ever pay Texel a visit again, please have a look. We are looking forward to welcome you again.

Warm regards, Team Stayokay Texel
