“Nice hotel but bad administration”
Reviewed May 21, 2013

We had a wedding at the hotel and decided - with a large number of other wedding guests - to stay overnight. At our arrival we were told by the receptionist - much to our surprise - that she could not find our reservation, and then confirmed that it had been canceled (by whom??). She gave us another room, an upgrade in the master building, but this room was tiny. Next day, when paying the bill, the price was much higher than for the original room. It took quite some discussion to convince the receptionist that it was not out of free will that we had this room.... She checked it out and confirmed that we were right. No excuses made. Although the guests of the wedding party all had reservations for the same price (in the new underground wing) they were all asked to pay different prices. The administration seems to be a mess, and what is worse, no one ever excused himself/herself. They all blame each other, are not aware of arrangements made.

We spent 2 nights here and it is well placed for Amsterdam, the flower fields, Haarlem and Frans Hals and the coast too. It is an impressive building and is owned by ABN AMRO Bank. It has a Scottish feel to the old parts and here is the first key advice. The new wing is conference style accomodation, no doubt wanted by the Bank, and built half underground to avoid scarring the lovely parkland scenery. We would advise not staying in this level of room which we had been allocated by booking over the web. We were upgraded for 35 euros a night to a room that had a view but was very short on space for clothing. We guess it was the last old style room they had.

You can walk to a train to Amsterdam from here and hire bikes to explore the woods and park land.

The public rooms are worth walking around for they are great examples of 19c art and furniture. The staff were very good and it would be a clear 4* if the room had been a little bigger and better equipped.

Had a lovely stay here after visiting the Keukenhof gardens. The drive from Keukenhof was very pleasant and the estate is beautiful. The room was on the small and dark side with only one small window but acceptable for the price. Hotel staff were extremely accommodating, going so far as to e-mail back and forth with me several times about reservations at the hotel's restaurants.

However, our meal at the Brasserie DenK was an utter disgrace in terms of service. We had chosen this over De Vrienden van Jacob because we didn't want to have a long formal meal. The food at the brasserie turned out to be very nice but the service was one of my worst ever restaurant experiences. After 25 minutes sitting at the table with no menus we had to fetch our own. 50 minutes into the dinner we had finally manged to place an order but had not received so much as water or wine. The bread basket never arrived for our table. At no point was any apology or accommodation offered. The restaurant was busy, including one large party, but not full -- and they should have refused our booking if they could not handle the business. A stark contrast to the rest of the hotel where the service was outstanding.

This beautiful hotel, built in the early 1900s in a classic style, and in a beautiful outdoor setting, is a fantastic place to start a trip to Amsterdam or the Netherlands. It is VERY close to Schipol Airport, but also very quiet and peaceful. It is 10 minutes walk to a train station to Amsterdam, and the trains run until midnight. The hotel rooms are beautiful (don't know about the annex rooms -- but other reviews have rated those fine as well). Splurge on a "classic" room in the older house if you can, but book an annex room if you can't. Rooms are clean, beds and pillows are comfortable, staff is friendly and helpful, food is delicious, parking is right there, and access to trains is easy. Allow an additional night, and time to enjoy the grounds, if you can. Great place for a group event or party. And, of course, it's close to the flower grounds. In Spring, you can fly into Schipol airport in the afternoon, then drive or take a bus excursion to Keukenhof Spring Gardens from the airport (easy parking and may bus tour ops), and enjoy a lovely dinner and evening and morning at the Duin & Kruidberg hotel. It makes for a very easy transition to Europe time from the US. Highly recommend this place.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a balcony.

We got a "lifestyle package" which was a fantastic deal that included two nights in a patio room, a 4-course dinner at Vrienden van Jakob on the first night, and a 3-course dinner at Brasserie Denk on the second. The hotel is absolutely magnificent- make sure to peek into the banquet/event rooms when you get a chance. It's beautifully situated in the park and the grounds and exterior are out of a storybook. The patio room that we had was not grand, but decorated in a charming English country house style. Fans of sleek modern decor won't find it in the guest rooms.

Both restaurants were simply incredible. Vrienden van Jakob certainly deserves its Michelin star, and the wonderful chef came to our table to greet us and serve up an innovative and delicious consommé as an amuse. The more casual Brasserie was also wonderful, creative, and delicious. Breakfast (also at the Brasserie) was ample and luxurious, going beyond the standard European hotel breakfast buffet with eggs and pancakes cooked to order, fresh squeezed juices, and insanely decadent brownies.

We were especially impressed by the staff, in particular the waitstaff at the Vrienden van Jakob who went out of their way to accommodate us. After our long hike from the hotel to the beach and back (highly recommended!) we accidentally fell asleep for longer than we had intended and ended up showing up 45 minutes late for our reservation, utterly embarrassed at our thoughtless mistake. The staff greeted us cheerfully and said it was actually better for them that we had come at this time. Whether that was true or not, it was certainly very lovely of them to put us at ease! Afterwards we ran into a few of the staff in the lobby as they were cleaning up and they were so friendly, inquiring about our stay, where we were from, etc. One of them even took the time to tell us about the history of the hotel and fascinating stories about some of the rooms. These interactions really distinguished our stay here.

The only thing I can suggest to the hotel is that it's probably time to get wireless access in the guest rooms. I'm all for unplugging while staying at a luxurious country estate, but at this point having internet access in rooms just seems like a given at a four-star hotel, like soap and TV. The cable connection isn't enough anymore because so many people travel with devices that don't have ethernet ports, and offering wireless only in the public areas isn't what I'd expect at this level of service.

All in all, a wonderful experience and I hope to be back!

Room Tip: Although the patio rooms are nice, they do feel more like you're in a standard hotel. We found...

Stayed here for 2 nights over Easter as part of a wedding party. The hotel and it's grounds are both stunning and very well maintained.

We stayed in one of the garden rooms, which are on a wing of the main building. The room was large and clean, with a balocny overlooking a courtyard area. The beds were incredibly comfoartable!
Staff were very friendly and helpful, particularly the head of housekeeping who was a big help when we'd lost our luggage at the aiport!

The food at breakfast and available at the bar in the evening was lovely and, we thought, quite reasonably priced. Drinks at the bar are on the steep side though.

We really couldn't find fault with anything and the wedding ceremony and reception were aboslutely fantastic!

It was in connection with a training that I had the occasion to visit the hotel and stay there. It was one of the most beautiful estates that I have seen. In the morning rays of the sun, the place looked like being part of a fairy tale. It was so surreal that I could have stood there for hours on end, lost in the tranquility that sight offered. The rooms are well furnished and luxurious. What I loved the most about the place is that the newly added rooms to the hotel have been concealed so well that it retains it's pristine qualities. The food was delicious, though some variety would have been appreciated. The tiny pastries to be found on the coffee tables in the morning were small surprises waiting to be discovered. I was not happy with two things, 1. Lunch, which was underwhelming, and 2. Television, which was not working properly. But I would very much love to visit the hotel again, even if it is just to sit in the estate and observe the hotel from across the lake - still, it would be worth it...
