“a good address north of Amsterdam”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2014

I stayed here on mulitple occasions, and have never been deceived. Spacious rooms, large bathroom, good restaurant, friendly staff.
The only negative is the poor sound isolation. You have to hope that you have no noisy neighbours, or party people in the corridors.

Stayed in Deluxe room with good bed and nice large shower. Flat TV screen and free wifi.
Service was ok and staff friendly, but i got the feeling that they could be more attentive to the customers.

Breakfast had a good choice and good quality.

For business this is a good place to stay, very convenient next to the highway. .

We stayed here over New Year,( not the first time.) Our rooms were very comfortable and clean. Dinner was delicious and the staff very friendly and patient even though they were to close early that evening. The bar was open till late and their was a good party feeling. A glass of champagne from the hotel at midnight but no fireworks as in other years. We will certainly return.

The Hotel offers a pleasant stay for business: rooms very large and confortable, front desk assistance very efficient, breakfast with very large choice and quality. Also the restaurant is good. In my opinion the restaurant should be improved with more typical Dutch plates. Food is good but it list is composed mainly by international plates.
Beautiful swimming pool if you have 1-2 hours free.
Only wek point of the hotel is the position, a little bit far from towns

In comparison to other hotels in the area (including Alkmaar and the coast), this is probably one of the best. And I have started to return more often, and I feel comfortable here, so it is not all bad. And the single-biggest issue that prevents me giving 4 stars - when compared in the context of the Netherlands - is probably a little unfair, because in comparison this is a 4 star hotel.

And that issue is Service!

The older rooms are OK, but the deluxe rooms (actually misleading, because they are only one level above the basic in quite a long hierarchy) are comfortable and pleasing: good work area, lighting, good TV (and selection), comfortable bed and excellent bathroom and shower.

The food is from an industrial kitchen (wait until you see the size of the catering operation), but is surprisingly good considering, and the menu is large and varied enough for a frequent business traveller.

But back to the service: it's not a lack of people! Reception is always well-staffed, and the restaurant is teeming with servers.

It's just something strange that is seems like they are trained to ignore guests as much as possible. I mean, why walk three times past a customer's table and not look to see if a glass is empty? Or a plate needs clearing? Maybe they are worried I would like another drink and they would have to do some extra work?

Even the restaurant managers, walk by ignoring customers.

And reception, while moderately efficient (long business processes, but they are efficient at dealing with them), has an air of superiority that makes me feel like they are doing me a favour.

But I would have to say that the service - when given - is genuine and friendly.

And maybe I should ignore the minor details: e.g. it's five days after the clocks have changed, but no one has changed the clocks in the rooms (on the coded TV, so not even possible for me to change); some room TVs have BBC, but others don't; the beautiful shower (and it is), but with taps and controls that can't be used with wet hands; the shower tray that is a grid and everything falls through it; the lack of a housekeeper to check rooms (although mostly the cleaning staff do a reasonable job).

So, bottom line: I keep coming back. And at least it is consistent. And I've been working in the area for 18 months, so I feel somewhat qualified in my comparisons with other hotels. Also, if you have a family or are with children, then this is definitely the place to come.

Room Tip: The "deluxe kamers" which are one-up from the basic rooms are renovated and near reception...

I stayed at the Van der Valk, Akersloot overnight prior to an all day business meeting the following day. The hotel is beside the A9 motorway, with a motorway exit adjacent and is only 25 minutes by taxi from Schipol. You can get the train from Schipol to Uitgeest (change at Slotterdijk) and then a cab, which is cheaper, but slower.

The hotel is large with the guest rooms all on two floors and connected by a maze of corridors. Everything is well signed but it is still easy to lose your bearings. The rooms are large, clean and comfortable with all the usual extras. I had a room facing the motorway and they must we very well sound proofed, because traffic noise was not a problem.

I enjoyed three meals, one in the restaurant and the other two in the buffet and have no complaints about the quality of the food or service.

There are excellent conference and meeting facilities on the second floor; our gathering had over 150 persons present and the hotel and staff coped well and withour fuss. In fact all the staff I encountered were both helpful and friendly.

This hotel is an excellent alternative to Amsterdam for business, but it is very fundtional and lacks atmosphere which is the only reason why I have only awarded four stars rather than five.

Room Tip: Doesn't matter from what I saw. Noise is not a problem for rooms facing the motorway.

This is a great hotel if you don't mind staying away from the normal tourist places. Amsterdam and Alkmaar are only small train ride away if you do want to go to the bigger tourist towns.

The rooms were very nice and clean. One thing I wish I knew before I got there is that they some theme rooms, of course a little pricier than a normal one, which if or when I come back I will definitely be checking in to one of them. The food is really good at the restaurant they have there except guess I'm used to the fast pace we have in the states that the service seemed pretty slow to me, but none of the locals or other guest seemed to mind.

Great place over all.
