I hate doing this review, because this hotel is our secret getaway. But the owners are the friendliest and most attentive, so we must share our experience. We recently stayed for the third time, and each visit has been the same high quality and value. The restaurant is very good, too.

We stayed in this hotel with our 4 friends during our hiking holiday (Heuvelland4daagse = The Hills Country Annual Four Day Walking Event in Limburg). The staff was once again very very friendly; every day of our walking event we had the opportunity to breakfast earlier then 08.00 a.m. because we wanted to start around 09.00 a.m. Also every morning they made us a perfect lunch package. When we came back to our hotel they asked us every time how it was and they gave us some savoury snacks with our drinks. Also on the day of arrival the manager of the hotel congratulated me with my birthday, which was the day before. We found this very thoughtful. We never toke diner in the hotel, but after diner in Valkenburg or Maastricht, the bar was still open and after just one day the waiter just knew what we liked to drink. It is a very special hotel, with caring staff.

Room Tip: Choose the more expensive rooms as they are a somewhat larger then the other rooms

I stayed here for two nights, unable to get accommodation in Valkenburg 5 kms away. However, the drive was pleasant and easy and the hotel turned out to be in the perfect location for my needs. The hotel has a slightly 1960s feel to it and it would not have been out of place in the English countryside. The staff were very helpful and all of them spoke good English. The barman was especially helpful, even running out to me with the room key when he saw I had my hands full.
I took the half-pension meal both nights and found the food exquisite and beautifully presented.
The bedroom was well appointed with a jacuzzi bath (just the thing after a cold day out).

Room Tip: The hotel has two floors but no lift so anyone with mobility issues should ask for a room on the low...

Excellent hotel in a nice surrounding. The staff is very, very friendly and helpful. The design of the hotel is very cosy and the rooms are nicely done. It is a very quiet surrounding and you can step out of the hotel and you can start to walk and/or ride your bike. We'll come back again for sure!

Very lovely, quiet and large house that looks like a home inside and out.
The hotel is just a few miles from the American WWII Cementary, a luxury pool and spa centre and besides being 15 miles from Maastricht, it's also near Holland's only Indoor Winter sport complex with a ski slope. I was there for business and not holidays.

I arrived in the late afternoon and headed to the bar for a beer. I asked the manager, (who has been working there for years and was doing everything from checking in, waiting tables, tending bar, etc..) about these attractions and told me he has never been there and does not know anything about the area, which I find un-acceptable when running a hotel. He also just stood there, about 1 meter opposite me behind the bar, saying nothing and staring at me as if I was going to pull out a weapon rob him as I was drinking my beer. It felt like last call for alcohol 30 seconds before they throw you out.
Deciding to head off to Maastricht, he finally started to open his mouth and pestering me about eating dinner at the hotel restaurant to which I declined and glad I did. The next morning he had a short sleeve shirt serving Breakfast and had some sort of skin disease on his arms with sores and large patches of dead, flaking skin. I passed on Breakfast and drank a coffe after checking the cup.
Finally upon checking out, they do not take credit cards and I was never told when booking the room although they took me reservation with my AMEX card.
With someone other than him, I would have given a better rating. He was really odd and made me feel un-welcome. What a pity!

Room Tip: Bring a Maastricht travel book

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
“ 'Our stay was too short', sigh most guests of Hotel Groot Welsden. Understandable after having seen the fine three star hotel in the middle of the beautiful undulating landscape of Limburg. Its situation nearby Maastricht, Thermae 2000, Belgium and Germany make this place very suitable for tours, but the hotel itself has also much to offer. The beautiful garden for example, during the evening fairy-like illuminated, where one can enjoy the view and repose on comfortable reclining-chairs set around a fountain. The interior of Hotel Groot Welsden is very beautiful, in English style. The lounge rather looks like a cosy living-room than an impersonal hotel room. This personal style is visible everywhere. There are no standard rooms but every room has its own furnishing and style, some even have a whirlpool bath and small terrace! The guest book that is signed many times by very satisfied guests, speaks volumes: in this are mainly praised the very friendly service and the excellent restaurant. An ideal place therefore for the tourist that is looking for tranquillity, luxury, beauty and that personal touch! ” Your hotel room is tastefully furnished with a luxurious bathroom (a few with a whirlpool bath). ... more   less
