Grand Cafe Hotel Kruller
Ranked #2 of 3 Hotels in Otterlo
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed July 26, 2008

We made a last-minute decision to go to Otterlo for the park and museum. There was a reasonable room at the GCHK through booking.com, so I took it. Breakfast was included and the proximity to the park entrance made it an easy choice.

The staff were very friendly and enthusiastic. We had to give the door to our room a good shove to get inside. Our room was clean and basic--it looked like some updating had been done in the bathroom. I noted there was no hairdryer, but I did not ask for one as I didn't need it. All of the minimum requirements were there, including a comfortable bed and extra pillows in the cupboard.

We chose to eat dinner at the Sterrenberg down the road, and the choice was validated when we passed by and the GCHK's café was packed with loads families with young, boisterous children. (The Sterrenberg's restaurant was top rated for Otterlo on www.iens.nl, with GCHK running second) Breakfast the next morning, was more sedate, however and the breakfast buffet was perfectly good.

The staff stored our bags after check-out so we could spend the day in the park and cheerfully sorted us out for the bus back to the train at the end of the day.

Although no-frills, this hotel certainly met the need and the staff were definitely the highlight.

We stayed here for 2 nights in mid-May
Rooms are above the nice-looking restaurant, rooms were plain but quite comfortable, some very small - we had the Colorado room, one of the larger ones, with a view of the church and school out the front
Very friendly and helpful staff - be ready, though, there's one tiny desk for both hotel and restaurant check-in
Restaurant food was not good, not bad, best we could describe is commerial and uninspired - for dinner, go eat at the local pub down the street (to the west, opposite way from the Hoge Veluwe park) instead. Breakfast buffet was very good, though.
Plenty of parking in back
Best feature - besides price - was walking (about 1 mile?) directly down the street to the Hoge Veluwe Park entrance and then touring the Park on the famous the white bicycles - fabulously fun - do not miss - this was why we were there
Walking down to the Park, you walk past the two other hotels in tiny Otterlo, The Te Witte Haus looked more like a cute B&B and we might have rather stayed there - but then, the Grand Cafe atmosphere was really relaxed and friendly - and the other Hotel Sterrenberg (?sp) looked modern and formal and pricey
