This is one of our favorite places to go for a day trip. The museum is excellent, and it is situated on the grounds of a very beautiful and peaceful national park.

It is nicest in the spring, summer and fall when the weather is nice, but if you want a day of cycling without a lot of crowds, it can be great on cool days as well.

If you like nature and or culture and want a day away from the city, plan an entire day here. You can easily spend a few hours at the museum, and we usually combine that with a picnic and half a day cycling. There are also restaurants on the grounds of the park and inside the museum.

It's about an hour and a half drive from Amsterdam. I'd recommend parking in the little lots just outside the entrances to De Hoge Veluwe national park as it's cheaper than bringing your vehicle inside the park. You can then walk inside the park and it only takes a few minutes until you'll find the free white bikes that can take you to the museum or visitor center. Sometimes on sunny days if you arrive too late, many of the bikes are already taken so get there early if you can.

Once you pay the entry fee to get in the park, bikes are free to use throughout the day. These are the kinds of bikes that people of all ages can sit comfortably on. Often you see older people there with their grandkids. It's a place for everyone and definitely a great family place. We love it!

If you decide go cycling, ALWAYS bringing rain gear and sunglasses to throw in a backpack with water and a picnic. This is the Netherlands, and sometimes the weather can change on a moment's notice. There can occasionally be high winds or rain and sunglasses can be good for shielding your face from bugs if you go for a long bike ride. We always bring a light jacket with a hood and rain pants just in case, but most people show up in just jeans or shorts so it depends how prepared you want to be.

The attached link will give you all the information you need to plan your visit (entry prices, coordinates for your GPS, etc).

Inside there is a lot of great art by for instance van Gogh, but also modern art of all sorts. Outside there is a beautifull sculpture park. And when you're done you can have a great tour through National Park De Hoge Veluwe

This was a special find for us. I suggest you try to carve out the better part of a day to see not only the wonderful art collection at the museum(excellent headphone tour recommended) and garden sculptures but take advantage of the free bikes and ride around the estate property; don’t forget the lodge as well. They also have a wonderful cafeteria. You will not be disappointed.

I have been visiting the museum for almost 30 years now, and seen several improvements. The sculpture park takes several hours to walk around, and the sculptures look good in the outdoor setting. Of course my first interest was Van Gogh, and I came here from Amesterdam where the new museum had opened to see perhaps the second greatest collection of this artists works. There are many fine paintings by his fellow artists there also.
We dined in the restaurant "Monsieur Jaques", which was busy. Adequate for our purposes, a typical noisy museum cafe with staff struggling to to keep up with the demand and clear tables for the next diners.
