“Apartments not four stars quality”
Reviewed June 1, 2010

We had booked two adjacent maisonette flats via an Dutch auction site. On the ground floor there are apartments with one sleepingroom. On the second floor are maisonette flats with two sleeping rooms. Because of various supplements in addition to the low auction price, it was still an expensive weekend. Our apartments looked freshly painted and were clean. The beds were good and it was quiet, probably because of bad weather. The pool is small but warm and is open untill 9 pm. The apartments have some specific disadvantages. It is wood frame construction with wooden floors (very noisy) and electric radiators. A towel package costs 15 euro per person. If you have been given for example apartment number 120, there is a very long walk with your luggage (there are luggage carts). There was no hair dryer, you have to shower in the bath. The toilet is located on the second floor in the bathroom. The hotel is not within walking distance of the beach but pretty close to Hollum. An apartment on the ground floor, I would advise against it because of the noisy nature of the first floor. The service is good.

We booked a two night "Valentine's day" arrangement. When we arrived, it took a long time to check in since our reservation had apparently only just arrived. Moreover, although we had booked a room in the hotel, this was unavailable so we were moved to an apartment, which has fewer services (e.g no room service, no hair dryer). The bedroom in the apartment was very cramped and dark. Our arrangement included a five course dinner on one evening, but this was very disappointing so we only ate there one night. The swimming pool was very small and frequently crowded, so we didn't use it.

The only good thing is the location. The town is just outside the Village of Hollum, which is pretty and has a good selection of restaurants. I can recommend Herberg de Swan, where we ate hare and vension at very reasonable prices. It is only a 5-10 minute walk to the centre of the village. 10-15 walk minutes away is Hollum beach. This is very beautiful and has an attractive and popular beach restaurant (The Sunset).

We stayed at the Amelander Kaap for a weekend in June 2007. It's a good basic beach hotel. Nothing special about the hotel, but a good spot for families with kids, or for a weekend beach getaway.

The hotel is located just outside of the village of Hollum on the main road toward the beach nearby the lighthouse. From the hotel it's an easy 5-10 min walk to Hollum and 10-15 min walk to the beach. The bus rom the ferry near Nes took about 15 minutes.

Our room was large and clean. Furnishings were basic chain hotel style. The bathroom was normal size and had a combination bath/shower. Our room had a balcony which faced another part of the hotel, but we had good fortune to have a nice view of the "vuurtoren".

The hotel has all of the basic amenities on site. Bar/restaurant, indoor pool, tennis. Horseback riding is nearby. Golf is across the street from the entrance to the hotel. Bikes are available for rent at a small stand near the hotel or in Hollum. As in the rest of Holland, dedicated bike paths are everywhere. We didn't use any of these things, so can't comment more.

Wifi is a pay-for service via T-Mobile and seems to work throughout the hotel.

We had breakfast at the hotel. This is organized buffet style - a mix of hot and cold choices. Eggs, breads, cheeses, meats, yogurt & cereals were all there. For dinner, we wandered into nearby Hollum and ate at the local pizza/pasta joint (lasagna and pizza were both very good).

The main attraction in the area is the beach and the dunes. The walk is a pleasant 10-15 minutes past a few homes, a farm, a cafe, a campground, and the lighthouse. The beach itself is one of the nicer ones that we've seen in the Netherlands - it's not developed and only has a cafe on the beach itself. The beach has good sand, is clean and safe for the kids. Water is clean and good for swimming, body surfing.
