We stayed for a last minute weekend break in a recently refurbished kids villa for 4.

VILLA
The villa itself was very good, kid friendly with a great little playroom and fenced outdoor area, bathroom step, weird dog model stuck on the wall by the toilet, etc. The beds are made up for your arrival (a bit confusing on the website but only the cot doesn't have linen). They are fairly comfortable, although the pillows are lumpy, presumably from washing. There is a fancy coffee machine and some pods provided. Our dog came, all villas allow dogs here. Our villa was located in area 3, just behind the Aqua Mundo. Perfect location, handy for all the activities.

AQUA MUNDO
We had a couple of good sessions in the pool complex. It's not as big as the British centreparcs pools, but still fun. Good sliding options including a steep fast slide, a couple of flumes for less experienced swimmers, the rapids if you want an exciting ride, plus a couple for strong swimmers (diploma holders), which we didn't try out. The kids pool was not very well designed: a huge hardly used sandpit taking up most of the space; rocky walls around; the way up to the slide up a big step (saw one toddler come a cropper here) then via a pirate ship with not enough room for 2 people to pass; weird pig statue squirting water from its teats. The one bubble pool was a hot pool, the bubbles weren't working and it was crammed with people. Obviously they need more in the way of bubble pools. There were some nice things, such as loungers with overhead sun lamps if you have time to relax. Didnt use the nudist sauna.

RESTAURANTS
We ate at
- Pizza/Grand cafe restaurant. Decent food, fun play area not too expensive but a bit lacking in atmosphere.
- Pancake House. Nice pancakes, fun play area, very friendly waiter, but also a bit dead.
- Grill. Popular. Delicious steaks (the 'surf' option was unavailable) the staff seemed very pushed and in the end we couldn't bear to wait to order desserts but got an icecream at the supermarket on the way home.
- Snacks . Nice burger, standard fast food.

ACTION FACTORY
It's winter, events are running on tickover. There were a couple of attempts at entertainment, all free, but it was a bit rubbish. The kids disco was probably the best of a bad bunch. There's a huge room with those useless grabbing machines for your kids to obsess about. There is a big jungle gym type of area which was enjoyed by our two, for sure. The bowling looked good, although we didnt do it. One excellent activity was indoor climbing. Our 7 year old had a brilliant time doing this. She was the only one and loves climbing, so had the very friendly instructor's full attention. Dad was also roped in to 'secure' her and even climbed up a couple of times. Excellent value for 10eur for an hour.

GENERAL
A small park, not hard to get around. Saw very few bikes. Compared to the British Centerparcs we have been to, where you always see people discretely doing maintenance, this was looking pretty down at heel. Peeling paint, green mould everywhere.

Right, where do I start exactly?
Outdated, dilapidated, unrefurbished combined with miserable, basic service, severely overpriced – in short, a rip- off.
But from the start: I booked this joke of an “accommodation” via a booking platform as a – at least I thought so – nice change from the standard staple of hotels during a business assignment.
What should have made me think twice was the “no cancellation” note on the hotel profile.
A change it was all right -
Arrival and Check- in was McDrive style- normal for Center Parcs, I was since told.
First problem arose when I had the cheek to ask for a formal invoice- all from car window to check- in window. The general idea of an invoice seemed to be completely new to the receptionist. The part with the company address completely threw her off track. No chance of getting further here.
The directions to the “room” were somewhat vague – resulting in a nice and cosy drive of about 10 minutes around the “village” of uninspired, slightly dilapidated 1970s style bungalows – not the slightest resemblance to the photos from the booking page, of course. Parking is about 500m from the room- great in a winter drizzle.
Room in a larger house, window was open on arrival – so nice and crisp inside at 3°C ambient temp. Not that closing the window helped much – single pane window is a great idea for a garden shed – didn´t know they still are around in hotel rooms. Needless to say that it is next to the bed…
Furniture was last chic in 1985 – and most of it obviously has not been refurbished since then.
Which includes the bathroom – at least three generations of bathroom fittings have been removed from the tiles – without doing much about the holes and glue rests.
Same goes for the dark stains in the bathtub, the chipped off chrome on appliances and the grey- brown toilet seat – all complete with silverfish as added perk.
Or the rubbish bin with the rubbish bag folded& draped decoratively over it – DIY- message received. Let´s forget the request to remove bed linen and towels on departure and place them in the hall of the “villa”. Never came across such an un- aptly named structure. Not even a real estate broker on steroids would think of that name for the building….
After a few hours it was at least warm enough to take off the jacket – alternatives were unavailable, as during the winter time all “attractions” close sometime between 17:00 and 20:00h – which includes the indoor pool, needless to say.
The “complimentary breakfast” begins at 08:30h – perfect for the business guest.
Back to “Operation Invoice”: first morning, back at check- in:
Receptionist: “oh…ähh… but you have already this piece of paper”. Me:”Yes, I have it. It says “booking details” and is no invoice. There is even no mention of the price on it.”
Receptionist:”So you need something with the price on it?” Ähh, yes, that is what makes an invoice so interesting. You can do sums with it!
Receptionist:” Then you might want to go to the information desk.” Err, no, not really. Especially as it is about 500m in the other direction and will not open for another 2 hours (not that this info would have been forthcoming from the receptionist…). Me:”Can you please be so kind to leave a message with your administration, info desk or whatever to make out an invoice for my stay and provide me with it?” Receptionist:”But you can also phone them – I´ll write down the telephone no for you!” Sigh….
Later, phoning info: Oh, a written invoice? But you already have your booking details…Ähh… I´ll put you through…Invoice…oh.. I´ll connect you with my colleague…Oh, an invoice. But you have already paid! Can you send me an email to gakh.jgjeoijoehoj@hjkljljjij.com (just to illustrate the length and ease of reproduction). Sigh… I wrote an email - No, so far I am still waiting for the invoice…
Other issues: 15 minutes of internet usage: 1.50€. Four days (96h, to be exact): 24.95€
Location: if you consider Mars to be around the corner, this is the right spot for you.

Résumé: I am rather unfussy about accommodation and have stayed at any number of Hotels, Hostels, Camp sites and Holiday cabins over the years. I do not mind simple standards or some notches, if the price is right or the staff friendly, helpful or outgoing. What I really can´t stand is being ripped off, miss-sold - and unhelpful, uninterested staff, who couldn´t care less.
61.50€ per night for the provided service is just outside all proportions.
AVOID THIS DUMP at all costs!

We were there with family in two adjoining cabins, they were well equipped and comfortable. However the distance between the main centre, the cabin and the car park was much too far for myself and my husband to walk. The final straw was the walk to the children's petting zoo which took 20 minutes at a steady pace. We wanted to spend Christmas together and thought this centre would meet everyone's needs, but for us the distance to walk meant we chose to stay in the cabin more than we had intended. On a positive note, the buffet on Christmas Day and the following day were excellent and the shops and cafe bars welcoming.

Room Tip: Near to the centre!

The park was pretty good BUT the park isn't safe from crime (our pram was stolen from the swimming complex) and the staff were completely incompetent at helping us overcome this to enjoy the rest of the stay. They didn't/couldn't help with a police report, retrieval of the stolen pram, temporary replacement to enable us to continue with the rest of the stay (twin babies who couldn't be carried as an alternative!), even any immediate assistance in returning to our chalet from the swimming complex having been stranded there, or anything to help soften the blow. This was very disappointing and ultimately meant that we had to leave our holiday early as we couldn't manage without the pram.

Stayed here with the family the 2nd weekend of January. We had some vouchers, which we used to book the Waterfront suites. Which were very luxery. Normally we couldn't pay that type of houses, but with the vouchers it was ok. Rooms were very big, with good beds. 2 bathrooms in the house. One with bubble bath and sauna. Living room is great, nice views on the lake. With big kitchen with all the luxery like dishing wasser. In the morning fresh sandwiches at the door.

At the parc itself there is enough to do like bowling, chidren's farm, midget golf, putting golf and off course the swimming pool. Which in my memory was bigger then expected :)! For children there is much to do like the action factory, with all sorts of adventures.

Room Tip: If you have the money, book the waterfront.

We wanted to take our two kids (aged 12 and 15) to Amsterdam and were struggling to find an affordable hotel in Amsterdam for all of us. We looked at Centre Parcs and booked a Monday to Friday at De Eemhof in October half term. It was a great decision. We got there Monday afternoon, settled in to our basic but good accomodation and went off to swim.

Next day the kids booked their 3 activities for 25euro (voucher given to us on arrival). Choice and times were a bit limited but the got sorted. Zip wire, laser paintballing and FlowRider surf machine. All were really good and all staff spoke great English, were helpful and engaging. We spent the rest of the time swimming, relaxing and eating. On Wed we went to Amsterdam following directions to the park and ride given to us by Centre Parcs staff. It was very easy and the park and ride is excellent - 8euros to park and then free train into the centre of Amsterdam. One day in Amsterdam was enough - we hired bikes for an hour and cycled to the big park, went on a boat, visited the Rijksmuseum, had lunch and dinner. Were going to do Ann Franks house but queue was enormous!!

We at in both the pancake house and pizza place on site - both were fine and the supermarket is really good. Went over to the Bistro in the new marina bit for a drink and free wifi, had the drink but the wifi didn't work!!

I am really glad we did this. The booking at this centre parcs was around £400 Mon - Fri in October half term for a basic apartment sleeping 5. In Uk, basic apartment sleeping four for same period would have been almost £1000. Great value and we stopped in Bruges on the way home for beer, chips, waffles and chocolate - excellent!!!

The VIP suites at the Marina were clean, well equipped and with comfortable beds. However, no fitted sheets so the sheets move off the mattress all the time. Bathrooms are great, but towels are small and poor quality. You get fresh rolls and a newspaper delivered every morning - great! Although advertised on line - no free wifi at the VIP suites until 3 Jan. You can buy wifi but you have to constantly log in after a few hours, soa real hassle. Spa is only open on Tues & Thurs - Pancake House was only open on Thurs, - this was during the Xmas holidays - not what I would call customer service! The whole place was seriously understaffed. The service at the Grand Cafe, Fun Factory, and Pancake House was terrible. Half of our order was completely forgotten, food was served without cutlery or napkins, drinks came when we had finished the food, a pesto sandwich without pesto, and not a smile or a happy new year - ever! The only decent place to eat is at the marina restaurant which is not affiliated with Centre Parcs. The midget golf course needs serious maintenance and the kids farm was closed half the time we were there. The rooms have no phone so its difficult to book activities. Our children and grandchildren had been to Centre Parcs in the UK before, and were really surprised at the difference in quality, service and activities. De Eemhof is definitely no where near 5 stars. It needs a serious upgrade and more competent serving staff.
