Hotel Costa Brava
Ranked #14 of 32 Hotels in Platja d'Aro
Reviewed May 14, 2009

I had fond memories from my first visit is 1964. It is just as beautiful as I remember. The hotel is off the main road. It could be in another country. At this time of year, there are'nt the crowds and that made it very quiet and sedate.

Hotel Costa Brava in Platja d'Aro should not be mixed up with the Tossa de Mar hotel with the same name. I know nothing of the Tossa de Mar hotel but I am sure the two are often confused.

My 28-year-old son and I stayed at this magnificently situated small hotel for four nights in the beginning of May, 2008. When we planned our golfing trip to Spain we looked for reasonably priced accommodation without sacrificing comfort or even luxury. Platja d'Aro seemed a perfect base from where we could easily reach the splendid golf courses of PGA Catalunya, Emporda and Mas Nou. Our Swedish travel agent praised Hotel Costa Brava for its location and food, but when I saw the rating (3 star) and rates I hesitated. My own experience tells me that hotels in this price range seldom live up to their humble rating. Nevertheless we booked an extended weekend with half-board and toned down our expectations. I always study tripadvisor's reviews for hotels I am going to visit, but all I could find about this hotel was in Dutch. However, the reviews I tried to interpret raised my expectations a little. And when we parked our rental car right outside the reception I sensed that this hotel would be one of those really nice surprises you sometimes stumble over.

Although we arrived early the staff at the reception desk promptly gave us access to our twin room (No. 101 with a small balcony and sea view), and informed us that dinner would be served between 8 and 10 pm, breakfast between 8 and 10 am.

I hurried up the narrow steps, eager to open up the balcony door to the Mediterranean. First impressions of the hotel were very good but what knocked me off my feet was the excellent location and lovely sea view! The room was clean, neither spacious nor tiny, the beds were comfortable and the bathroom more than adequate. It even offered a bidé and jacuzzi bath tub, a bit old but functional. Apart from these extra vaganzas the room was not at all luxurious, just comfortable, which was more than I had dared hope for. Heating/cooling could be adjusted on a wall panel. The TV set was small but featured Spanish, German and a few English channels. There was a radio set and telephone in the room, but no Internet access.
An Internet connected computer was placed in the lobby and could be used on a pay-per-minute basis.

The breakfast buffet can not be compared to the huge hot and cold buffets of most north European hotels. It consisted of a variety of mostly white bread, different yoghurts, cereals, coffee and tea from two coffee making machines, fruit juices, lovely ham, cheese and sausages, and fresh fruit. You could toast your own bread and there were cold boiled eggs as well. And probably a few other items that I have already forgotten. Everything neatly laid out and fresh.

In the evenings we sat down on the indoor patio with a breath-taking panorama view onto the sea and studied the four-course menu which was included in the halfboard. You had a choice of three different entrees, three second courses, three main courses and three desserts. The wine list comprised many regional wines and wines in many price ranges. We tried a new red wine every night and thoroughly enjoyed them all.
I had the impression that many locals, families and couples, frequented the restaurant for its genuine local cuisine, and the romantic setting.
After dinner we often walked into the spacious bar and had a coffee or beer. On warm summer nights the doors to the beautiful terrace were open and you could enjoy your drink listening to the waves rolling into the cliffs 10 yards below your feet. See photo.

On our final day we wanted to squeeze in another round of golf (9 holes) on the spectacular Golf Club d'Aro of Mas Nou, and asked the woman at the reception if we could check out a bit later (13.00). She was very accommodating and kindly gave us time to come back and have a shower before we checked out. Thank you, we really appreciated that.

To sum it up, this hotel is perfect if you are looking for a lovely hideaway right next to the bustling tourist scene of a typical Spanish beach resort, and like me can't help smiling in half sleep when you wake up and hear the waves outside your balcony door.

The Hotel Costa Brava in Platja d'Aro is so much more value for money than most other three star hotels I have visited. My 10 points in the list below are reserved for some of the five-star hotels I have enjoyed. In a comparison with other three star hotels the ratings would be significantly higher.
Location: 10/10
Food: 7/10
Staff: 7/10
Cleanliness: 8/10
Value for money: 10/10
