Just returned from 4 nights at the Ciudad de Castelldefels. This is a 3 star hotel located a few minutes walk from the beach in Platja de Castelldefels. The hotel looks lovely upon approach & is on a quiet street. The main lobby is spacious & the decor is fairly modern. The staff were friendly enough, although other than checking in & out we didn't really have a great deal to do with them. We were shown to our room & were very pleasantly surprised to find we had a balcony overlooking the pool. The room was perfectly adequate for the stay. I was with a friend & had requested 2 single beds, which we were given, and there was a stocked mini bar (surprisingly, not too expensive either). The lack of plug sockets (1 in bathroom & 1 which the tv was plugged into) & the bathroom were the only negatives about the room. The bathroom was very pokey & tired looking (peeling paint). It had no window or extraction which meant it was extremely warm & humid in there & the shower had a life of its own, spraying all over the place. This really could do with being modernised. However, generally, we were pleased with the room considering what we had paid. We didn't eat in the hotel so couldn't comment on the quality of the food. The pool was nice although areas around the pool, again, looked a little tired & it was located near to a very busy main road so there was a lot of traffic noise. We never struggled to get a sunbed, but then we were down by the pool by 10am each morning & it did get busier as the day went on. We were there during the school summer holidays so as you can expect the pool was often overrun by excitable children. Perfect if you're a family I imagine, but if you're after peace & quiet I wouldn't recommend this hotel during the height of summer. The only other negative I should mention about this hotel, which I also found in the hotel we stayed at in central Barcelona, is the lack of sound proofing. Every morning we would be woken early (6-7am) by cleaners & other guests either banging around or talking loudly in the corridor. This could be extremely annoying! Location wise, if you're after a beach holiday & fairly easy access into Barcelona, I couldn't fault this hotel. Platja de Castelldefels, which is separate to Castelldefels & has its own train station, is a great little beachside resort. It is located approx 20-30 mins by train from Barcelona Sant train station (tip- buy a T10 ticket for approx 10 euros & you can travel up to 10 times along this line). The beach is fantastic & there are plenty of bars & restaurants within a few mins walk of the hotel. This isn't a particularly 'English' resort so thankfully has managed to steer clear of the tackiness of some other Spanish resorts I've stayed in. It's fairly modern & not particularly quaint but it definitely has a charm of its own. Be prepared to attempt to speak some basic Spanish as in most restaurants & bars the staff don't speak English. We ate some wonderful food whilst we were there, especially the seafood & I can thoroughly recommend the paella at the Cel Blau restaurant on the seafront. Our favourite bar was El Capo on the beach. The drinks (we mainly drank cocktails) were great & very cheap & there was salsa dancing & live music during our stay. All in all we were very pleased with our stay & would definitely recommend the resort to anyone looking for a chilled beach resort that doesn't break the bank.
