As another traveller wrote, we were also sceptical about staying here, but, as my husband and I only wanted a cheap break for a few days the price couldn’t be beaten for the facilities on offer.
First impressions were good; the entrance to the hotel was inviting and well kept with beautiful ornamental pots and shrubs, car parking was ample and secure with an overflow to the front of the hotel. The reception area was modern and spacious and the gentleman on the desk very efficient and pleasant - he spoke excellent English which was a bonus.
Having a quick look around the reception area we were very impressed, nice coffee/drinks bar that fed outside to a beautiful eating/relaxing area - where we enjoyed a few drinks over the next few days. Although noisy, plasma TV screens are not our thing, there was one in the bar area, but I’m glad to report the volume was kept at a reasonable level throughout. The free wifi was welcome and there seemed to be a few guests milling around and using the free computers.
The lift up to our room was different as it had one full glass wall which allowed for views of the pool area and over the road the Olympic Canal, from when Barcelona hosted the games - nice view and even though fairly near a main road the soundproofing inside was excellent.
Hotel corridors/lobby areas were spacious, nicely kept and the carpeting thick to absorb any guest noise, we found the hotel to be quiet late at night, even with the high occupancy. Arriving in our room we were pleasantly surprised, spacious and clean with a contempory feel, the room was warm and stuffy and I had to pop down to reception to ask how to work the air conditioning - it was actually very simple so my fault entirely, once the AC was on the room was cool in no time, and a real benefit being able to choose exactly what temperature.
The bed(s) were large and comfortable although two twins pushed together, we would have preferred a true double, but it wasn’t detrimental as the sheets, pillows etc were of a decent quality. Housekeeping came in every day and made the beds; the sheets were changed once in our five days which was ample for us. The ensuite bathroom was spacious, modern, clean, beautifully tiled and good quality liquid soap provided, the towels were changed every day even though a sign in the bathroom said the usual ‘leave the towels you require changing in the bath’, bit of a waste really and an unnecessary expense to the hotel and environment. Although no drink making facilities in room, drinks, snacks and coffee vending machines were on the first floor overlooking lobby - strangely I really enjoyed the machine coffee.
The pool area and grounds surrounding were beautifully maintained and spotless, more than I can say about a few of the guests who shamelessly abandoned their litter and fag ends, even though rubbish bins are in place. Pool towels could be hired for a refundable 10 euro deposit which was a great idea, towels were good quality and large enough.
Apart from a few minor details I will note later my main gripe with the hotel was the lack of sunbeds around the pool, the pool area itself is extensive and lends itself well to lazing around and having a drink and nibble of the hotel’s BBQ food, which seemed very popular although we didn’t try it. I believe the hotel has four floors of rooms with approximately 45 rooms on each floor, guess how many sunbeds around the two pools?... 25... yes, only 25 sunbeds for a hotel with around 180 double rooms, so possibly 350 odd guests? You can imagine, by 8am each morning the meagre 25 beds had towels on them and everybody else had to sprawl on the grass, which had been cleared of tab ends overnight thank goodness. I lost count of the times I heard guests saying they weren’t going to the pool as there were no beds - if it were my business I’d be in no doubt the lack of food and drink sold throughout the day could be directly linked to guests not wanting to ‘relax’ on the grass all day, granted there were dining tables and chairs, under cover, but you don’t have to be Alan Sugar to see a gap in the market here - beautiful facilities, great bar staff, but the choice to sit at a covered dining table or loll on the lawn is ridiculous. My husband and I went down to pool area at 110.30 one morning and had a coffee, waiting to see if a couple of sunbeds became vacant, obviously they didn’t and I went to reception to ask why there were so few sunbeds, the girl (dark shoulder length curly hair and glasses) was rather unhelpful and disinterested and couldn’t give me an answer, shame really as all the other staff at the hotel had been first class.
So, to summarise, well done to the staff and management, a lovely clean hotel, we really enjoyed our short break and will definitely stay here again, but would drive away every day to the beaches/resorts due to the sunbed shortage. A car is essential I think, but easy to drive to and from Barcelona airport, about 15 mins?
A few developmental points for the hotel management would be:
• Supply more sunbeds!
• Housekeeping need to abide by the notice in bathrooms re towel changing.
• Fridge in our room was dirty and cracked (never mentioned above as only a minor point for us as the rest of the place was fine).
• Few tiny ants on floor near sofas in reception - I mean only a few, half a dozen or so
maximum each time we sat down.
Oh, and I forgot to mention the toilets in Reception... beautiful!
