The castle is located on the edge of the crater of volcano Guanapay.
Originally a large tower was built in XV century then was enlarged during
XVI century as the refuge for local population from the attacking pirates.
In the XVII century the castle lost it's defensive importance due to construction of new fortifications in the Port of Arrecife.
Currently it serves as a Museum of Piracy.
PS. The view is quite nice.
