“4* well maybe not”
Reviewed April 27, 2013

This is a 4* location with 3* accommodation controlled by 1* management. For the most the front line staff are very welcoming and friendly, the food is good and cleanliness fine. However if you go as we did all-inclusive with expectations in line with other 4* all-inclusive experiences then you will probably be disappointed. Should you wish to skip breakfast or lunch in cases such as a day trip then there are no provisions for a snack in between meal times. Similarly the breakfast finishes at 10am but the bar does not open for coffee's until 11am. The bar on an evening closes at 11pm prompt at which point your ejected out to the poolside table and chairs. Not that we were wanting to party, all being eligible for a bus pass, or nearly anyway. It is just a very abrupt end to a pleasant evenings chat with fellow holiday makers. I suggest you consider these points which may at first seem minor, we along with others staying at the same time would not return without a number of improvements to the simple everyday facilities.

We have recently arrived back from our holiday in Lanzarote, staying at the Rubimar. My wife and I went with our two kids aged 5 and 2 for 8 nights. We paid €400 for our stay and, for the price, we thought it was very good value compared to the price you would pay for some of the other hotels in Playa Blanca proper. As previous reviewers have commented I also wouldn't rate it as a 4 star venue but I think that's kind of obvious in the price. We were completely self catering and didn't eat at the hotel so cannot comment on its quality, prefering instead to eat at the numerous restaurants down at the nearby lovely marina and in Playa Blanca itself (which is much cheaper than the marina area as you might expect). The apartments were nothing special but were perfectly adequate for our purposes and they were cleaned almost every day we were there except Sunday. It is a bit of a pain having to pay for the tv and air conditioner remote controls but, again, it's a modest fee, so it's not a major complaint. The lack of cutlery, cups and plates was a pain but at least it meant that the washing up didn't get out of hand! I almost hate to admit it as it sounds so sad, but we came prepared with our own small bottles of soap and washing up liquid as well as a cleaning sponge as we knew that there was a good chance these wouldn't be in the apartment. The lack of a kettle was not ideal but it only took 2 minutes to boil a pan of water.
The hotel has a large unheated outdoor pool (and smaller baby pool) and a smaller, but still good sized, heated indoor pool. I would contest other reviewers' comments that the outdoor pool was 'freezing' (although if it is breezy it can get chilly). Granted, it's not the warmest but once you jump in it only takes a few moments to get used to. My 5 year old an I had great fun in it but my 2 year definitely preferred the indoor pool and we generally ended up there every day. We didn't really avail of the other amenities at the hotel such as the gym, sauna, and tennis & paddle courts but they looked good quality if you were up for a more active holiday.
My kids did attend the Kids' club on a few days and they enjoyed it although my 5 year old daughter was a little intimidated by the fact that there were a lot of Spanish kids there at the same time (it is Spain after all, so fair enough) and didn't really interact too much with them even though the kids entertainer, who was a really friendly young lady, always tried to involve all the kids in whatever they were doing.
All in all, we all had a fantastic time, which was also helped by the great weather we also enjoyed, and would definitely consider going back. As long as you go with realistic expectations of what to expect of this hotel then you won't be disappointed.

My partner and have just returned from a very pleasant holiday during the Easter break. The hotel is in good location in the resort, close to the marina. The hotels facilities were good with access to the tennis and paddle courts as well as the gym and spa. the food and local drinks range was good. Just about the only thing against the hotel was the lack of free wifi, I'm sure it'll be addressed soon, it's just one of those addition that people expect nowadays.

Room Tip: For quiet request a room away from the gym, music is played from 10.00 til 22.00 each day.

. Transfer service to airport 25€ (2 pax), necessary to book at least one day before.

The above list does not include the fact that kettles are not necessarily in your room - they have to be requested and may well not be available.

I could not guarantee that our room towels were changed as often as was on the list - the same goes for the sheets.

We did bed & breakfast. The breakfast menu was quite adequate for our needs as we are not into the "full English breakfast" mode anymore.

We had to get the hotel maintenance man come to the room and fix a broken towel rail & also a non functioning powerpoint.
All in all a not very satisfactory holiday.
Poor quality beds.

We have just returned from our 11 night stay in the Rubimar hotel. We went with our two kids aged 1 and 4. We only booked it last minute, but it was a really good choice, perfect for us.

The rooms are large and bright. They are well setup and all the balconies face the evening sun. The balconies are small but with enough room for a table, two chairs and a clothes rack. It was a little tight for space with the two kids and us all in the one room, but it was perfectly acceptable and the room had good comfortable looking cots and fold away beds for them.

The rooms are cleaned every day except Thursday and Sunday. They don't change the towels or sheets every day though. The maid generally did a good job and didn't come too early. When our little boy had a little accident in bed one night, there was no problem getting the sheets changed even on a non cleaning day.

The rooms have reasonable facilities for self catering, but its only a two ring electric cooker, a microwave and a toaster so you'd struggle to cook anything complex. That's fine by us though as we went out every night. It's all you need to do breakfast, or bread and cheese etc for lunch though. The rooms have no kettle, which is a bit daft but really no big deal, just boil water in a pan. The one thing I really think is lacking though is a dustpan and brush. Also, take a tea towel ( or buy one locally for 1 euro)

We were initially put in room 136 which had a balcony at the back at ground level. Fine, except that within a few minutes of us getting there, several feral cats appeared on the balcony. They were a real pain as they kept climbing on our towels hanging out to dry and knocking them on the floor to lie on, sleeping on our clothes etc - within a very short time it was all covered in cat hair. They kept trying to come in the room too. I'm allergic to cats, and generally this wasn't good so we asked to be moved. We were moved to another room - 234- upstairs. It was identical, except for the absence of cats, but I could breathe again! As we moved out, we found a note someone had left saying ' please have a heart and feed the cats, its a mum and babies'. Well seeing that, it doesn't take Sherlock Holmes to work out why the cats are so keen on being there, does it! I know it's not the hotels fault, but really. Why do people do this? That's really the only negative thing I'd say though, and the hotel staff sorted it for us.

The facilities of the hotel are fine. A good bug outdoor pool, a small kids pool and a heated indoor pool. The first week of our stay, we saw virtually no one around the pool all day. By the end though it was getting into Easter holidays and it was noticeably busier. There were still always sun beds available though. The outdoor pools are, as expected and as normal, unheated. They were fine for adults, a little chilly for a minute when you get in is all. Possibly a little too cold for small kids though - they didn't stay in very long before saying it was too cold. The indoor pool was really warm - and great for the kids- but too warm for me, and very highly chlorinated which stung my eyes a bit.

The hotel has a kids club for an hour and a half each morning but it just seemed to consist of a bunch of older kids sitting in a well equipped but dark room doing painting. They were mostly Spanish speaking too so my little boy was a bit lost. He only went once. Perhaps it's better for older kids.

Main plus - the hotel is in a fantastic location. Right at the Marina, which is lovely to walk around. There are lots of good bars and restaurants there, as well as a couple of supermarkets. It's not your touristy Irish bar/sports bar/English breakfast type place. But come on, why go to Spain if that's all you want? It's lovely, but not especially cheap. Just outside the hotel there are a couple of snack bars which are cheaper, and quite friendly. Our 4 year old loved it as one of them had a -very noisy - parrot in it! There are lots of lovely places so take your pick, but we particularly liked Lani's, Afrodite little Italy, and cubierta/upper deck. There's a fun market in the marina on weds and sat too.

If you walk along the flat and wide seafront path you get to the main strip of playa blanca. If you walk at normal pace, it's probably about 15 mins. With two slow little ones we decided the 3 euros for a cab was less hassle! Once there, there's a further good choice of bars, shops and restaurants.

We hired a car for a week and went to Timanfaya national park, camel riding, the north of the island including the mirador del rio, cactus garden, etc. and the massive Sunday market at Teguise. We also went wine tasting in the winery areas. All recommended. Be prepared for a wait getting in to Timanfaya if its busy though. We also drove to papagayo beach. It's about 5 miles on an unsurfaced road, with an entrance fee of 3 euros. I understand you can walk too, it's about 3 miles along the coastal path. It was ok, but very busy and not that great and I wouldn't bother going again.

All in all - the hotel, resort and island, definitely recommended!

Just got back from a lovely relaxing week in Playa Blanca staying at the Rubimar Apartments. Fabulous location for the marina, where there are lots of lovely bars and restaurants. Apartment was large and spaciouos, adequately equipped. Although for self catering there was only a microwave, 2 hobs, and a toaster. Beds not the most comfortable but overall very clean and well kept. Staff at the hotel were friendly and sorted out a few little problems as soon as they were mentioned. Pool area nice and clean with lots of sun beds. My room was overlooking the tennis courts which was lovely and quiet, think maybe when it is busier the ones overlooking the pool bar and restaurant could get a bit noisey.

Just back from staying here-self catering apartment was very clean and furnished to a very good standard. We even had two flat screen TVs in the apartment. Kitchen was fine and modern. You need to supply tea towel etc though. We asked for top floor and sunny balcony and got this. Staff were very professional. Didn't use the hotel restaurant though the buffets were reasonably priced. The choices looked a bit limited when we went to look.
The hotel location was great for us-right behind the marina that has lovely restaurants at reasonable prices and was relaxing to walk around at night. Live music in some bars too. The hotel is on the coastal path running to Papagayo beach in the east and Playa Blanca and beyond in the west as well as next to a good supermarket. On the way to Papagayo, there is also another supermarket complex that was very reasonable for meat and had a great wee cafe too.
We played tennis at the hotel every day and the pool was spacious with hammocks and lots of sun beds. For children there was a bowling alley and crazy golf next to the hotel too.
This was our first time staying in Playa Blanca and though we have visited all the Canaries! This was my favourite place and hotel location at a very reasonable price.

Room Tip: All rooms seemed to get sun for a good part of the day. We faced the marina but the ones over the po...
