“Good kid-friendly hotel, though very big and service not very individual”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

We came for a baby and toddler-friendly experienced and had a nice stay overall. There were a few frustrations driven in many cases by the hotel being pretty large and staff not necessarily always in touch with what is going on in every corner.

The positives:
- some very child friendly features: Kikoland (with free childcare), Kiko at breakfast and bedtime, soft play areas, evening entertainment (though too late for children going to bed around 7). Overall great for children aged 3-5

- nice swimming pools (though mostly unheated and on the chilly side)

- beach and sea near the hotel are nice (though the beach is public and parasols are extra)

- friendly, helpful staff

- easy to get around with a pushchair (and a must for getting around the large resort with kids)

- good babysitting: sitters are generally hotel staff (ours were from reception), and they make an effort to give you the same person multiple nights

- Marina Rubicon nearby with some good restaurants (we liked Casa Roja and El Mirador)

- family suites spacious (though fixtures not really 5*)

- good buffet breakfasts

- some nice on site restaurants, e.g. Kampai, Don Giovanni

- good selection of British TV channels, inc. the main terrestrial channels

- we got the best package price on Travelsphere and were pleased with their service

Issues:
- hotel somewhat disorganised: "public relations" desk not open until 11am and never managed to tell us accurately which restaurants were open at a given time

- few dining options for younger children: limited alternatives to jarred food for infants, despite promises beforehand when my wife called that they make their own baby food; Kiko restaurant was closed most of the time were there. We ended up having room service for the children much of the time, and our infant developed a taste for jarred food ( which incidentally is free at the buffets)

- we didn't particularly enjoy the buffet and we're glad we didn't go half board (were also offered a €30 per head deal on buffet upon arrival, which may be cheaper than pre-booking)

- enormous place - definitely not boutiquey in feel. Our hotel complex (D) was a later add-on and is connected via a long tunnel under the road that feels a little like the bridges connecting hotels in Vegas. Few rooms would have a nice sea view (we were pretty far from the sea)

- careful with the transfer if you have 4 or more people and more than just 2 suitcases. They use a Mercedes with limited boot space and they insisted we upgraded to a mini bus for the return, even though we had fitted fine in a Ford Escort estate on the way to Gatwick

- Playa Blanca town, and the shopping centre on the way, are generally a bit naff

Dear guests,

Thank you very much for sharing your experience with us,

We are happy to read you´ve enjoyed the hotel with your family, and we take note of these points that will help us to improve our service.

Regarding the hotel´s spaciousness, we know that in some cases, places may be quite far, but you can find a public telephone in every area of the hotel to contact the Public Relations department (just dialling 9 as written on the phone) and they´ll solve your needs, letting you enjoy your stay and you don´t need to move through the hotel if you don´t want to.

Regarding gastronomy, the hotel has 9 restaurants with different styles of food (international, japanese, italian, mexican, gourmet, tapas...), I´m sure you´ll find your favourite dish in any of them.

I hope to receive you very soon in our hotel and have the opportunity to meet you personally.

Kindest regards,

I've stayed in Playa Blanca many times but this has been the best by far! Hotel is very relaxed, caters for everyone from young children to the more senior traveller. All staff from grounds maintenance, housekeeping, waiting staff and receptionists appear to take pride in their hotel and as guests you can appreciate the care and attention you receive! Rooms are spotless, 3 buffet restaurants to choose from at breakfast and a full entertainment programme allowing you to do as much or as little as you want. Will definitely be back here!

We stayed for a fortnight in August 2013 as a party of 3, my husband, myself & our 3 year old daughter. We stayed in a 1 bedroom suite which was beautifully clean & well situated with a swimming pool view. We had no palm tree issues as other reviews mentioned.
Our daughter was ill while we were away & the hotel staff were great, a doctor to our room in 20 minutes, offers to collect prescriptions for us from the pharmacy, & help with the Spanish instructions on various medicines!
It made a very stressful time much easier to deal with!
When back to full health we all enjoyed the facilities to the full, kikoland, the soft play kikopark & evening kids entertainment were all great.
We stayed bed & breakfast so took full advantage of breakfast each morning & strolled out in the evenings to the town or the Marina.
A great holiday!

Stayed here recently for almost a couple of weeks.

The good points:

Check-in was good with a glass of Cava, and against our better judgement we decided to take a special offer rate for three meals in their main three restaurants.

We had a junior suite room, as requested, on a high floor with views over the pools and the bay. Clean and tidy, with nice facilities and toiletries. Great balcony with chairs and table. Lots of shower power, and a tiny kitchenette with sink, microwave and fridge.

Staff excellent, especially the very cheerful young woman who dealt with our room extremely efficiently both morning and evening.

We were there for a celebration, and returned to our room late one afternoon to find an iced bottle of Cava and a card from the hotel - a really nice gesture - and we went out on the balcony to celebrate.

Had a really lovely meal in the Isla de Lobos restaurant - we had already sussed it out and knew it would be an expensive meal. There is also an Italian restaurant - which was good - a Japanese restaurant and a tapas restaurant as well as the three buffet style restaurants. However there are so many good restaurants within walking distance and this is what we tended to do.

After the first morning at the "cattle run" breakfast in the Mexican restaurant, we decided to book in at the Isla de Lobos restaurant for breakfast at a cost of an extra €3 per person per day. Really worth the extra cost in our view, relaxed and serene with no giant duck parading between the tables, as was the case the first morning in the Mexican restaurant. Was this really necessary in this class of hotel?

Enjoyed a few lunchtime sessions at the Chiringuito bar, and four of us were presented with complementary olives and fried baby squid when we ordered a second round - lovely - and not something we would have chosen if left to our own devices!

Now the downside:

Got a refund on two of the buffet meals due to being ill in the night after eating in one of the restaurants.

Not sure why - in a five star hotel - we had to be blasted with noise from the "entertainment" being held at the top pool. We were always at the far side at bottom pool, and the chap on the microphone with the music from speakers was extremely loud. This was something we had not expected, as a lot of the time all was peaceful and serene until shattered by this intrusion. We complained and it was temporarily turned down, but we had to complain again on another occasion, after which there was a noticeable reduction in the noise. The fact that there were dozens and dozens of people around the two pools enduring the intrusion, yet less than a dozen people in the upper pool taking part in the activity, seemed stupid.

Regarding the very early putting out of towels - this was perpetuated as people left and others arrived. If you didn't join in then you didn't stand an earthly of being able to sit around the pools. Inevitably some guests left their towels for hours on end without ever lying on their reserved beds! It is inevitable that you may wish to go somewhere during the day to have a drink or a bite to eat for an hour or so and the beds will get left, but some people really abused the situation. However I'm not sure what the solution is to that one.

I'm sure a five star hotel does not need to be charging for the tea and coffee they supply in the rooms. We were quite shocked at this.

Suggestion:

An ice making machine on each floor would be a great addition to this hotel.

All in all we had a good stay despite the little niggles and would probably visit again at some point.

Room Tip: High floor and request no foliage between your balcony and the view!

Dear guest,

Thank you very much for sharing with us your suggestions to improve our service and facilities, your comments will help us to offer you a better stay when you come back to the Princesa Yaiza.

Regarding the giant duck at breakfast, it´s KIKO, the mascot of the hotel and a star for children! They wake up every morning counting down minutes to see Kiko at the buffet breakfast, it´s a really good moment (even the best) for children at the hotel. For adults and couples, as you know, we have an a la carte breakfast in our gourmet restaurant Isla de Lobos, with stunning views and the best service and food, so I´m sure you enjoyed this moment of the day with your couple.

We hope to see you soon at the Princesa Yaiza and we take note of your comments in order to improve, and I´d like to meet you personally in your next visit to let me know if you have noticed this improvements.

Just got back from a very enjoyable, relaxing week at this superb hotel. The room was lovely, with a great view from our balcony. Good choice of restaurants and bars with faultless staff, we particularly enjoyed the Japanese food!. Nothing was too much trouble, I was provided with extra tea bags for our room, in order to enjoy my first cuppa each morning (typical Brit). Buffet breakfast had everything we wanted, and more. Overall, highly recommended.

Room Tip: If you want the sun on your terrace all day, when you feel like 'staying in', just check whi...

The staff were all very friendly at the hotel whilst being professional at the same time. The kids entertainers worked hard to keep the activities fun and in particular Fabio was hugely enthusiastic organising the adults sports and kids games. He seemed to be everywhere and my 2 year old concluded that there must be two of him - "the Fabios". He was the standout member of the team for us

Fabulous hotel from start to finish. The staff are incredibly helpful. The children loved kiko land and the mini disco every night. The pools get a little crowded but are lovely and clean. We found the pools in kiko land pretty much deserted and shallower so they were warmer. The food at the hotel was excellent and the buffet is great with small children. We were upgraded to a suite and it was large and clean, perfect for a family. The little kitchenettes are brilliant as we have a one year old and I could heat his food. I honestly didn't think we could stay at such o lovely hotel with a young hotel. It was so nice we came home and booked for 2 weeks next year!
