“Lovely Hotel, but.......”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2014

We have just returned from an 11 night stay at the Rubicon Palace and must say that the hotel seems to be really well run, staff are very pleasant and helpful. Pool areas are clean and well maintained, lots of sunbeds, though people do reserve the best spots early on near the main pools with towels as usual! Spa facilities are great, I had a relaxing massage, absolutely lovely and we used the spa on our last day for a couple of hours then showered and got ready to leave which was very nice. We had a lovely room in the main block on the 5th floor overlooking a courtyard with a sea view in the distance, huge bed, flat screen television, the bathroom had toiletries and hairdryer. There was also a kettle and two cups in the room, although you would need to take your own tea bags/coffee etc. and there was a fridge and safe (to hire). One very odd thing was that there were no drawers in the room, just a wardrobe and small cupboard. The speciality restaurants were lovely, we found all three of them to be very nice. The oriental is adults only, which you are allowed to book for twice per week, per stay and the Italian and Mediterranean where you are only allowed one booking per stay. We found this unusual for guests staying 10 nights to 2 weeks as in previous hotels offering the restaurant evenings it was a booking per week per guest. I actually asked about it and the lady said she would check with management, then confirmed later the above. This is such a shame, as if travelling as a couple the 3 speciality restaurants are the only places to have a pleasant evening meal without the crazy, noisy atmosphere of the main restaurant which was more like a large works canteen. Truly, I have never witnessed so much chaos in all my life, add the that the racket and unruly children, it is not a good recipe, I dread to think what it is like in high season. This is a really big complex and obviously the restaurant has to be big enough to cater for guests, but it is huge, I think in would benefit from two sittings or at least a family dining area. The children messing about with food etc., walking into people, slopping food and drinks over floors and furniture and parents that couldn't care less (I have to say these were not British families) I really don't want to be witnessing that on holiday, that said some of the parents were not much better, leaving all the mess made over chairs and tables. Entertainment was quite good, we had a couple of really good nights watching a couple of the speciality acts and the piano bar was quite nice especially on the evening there was a duo on so a bit more entertaining. Drinks were a reasonable standard, in the piano bar you could ask for branded drinks and would be served them on AI. The other thing we wasn't keen on was the fact the hotel is so far away from anywhere else, it is a good 40 minutes walk to Playa Blanca and literally nothing between the hotel to the first bar/small shopping area for around 30 minutes walk. We do like to go out for a drink elsewhere for a change and this wasn't an option unless going to resort centre. Taxis were quite good and were charging between 4 and 5 euros per journey. We went to the market near the marina (Saturdays and Wednesdays) worth a look, quite a big market, this was just over 6 euros each way. Only other problem was the lack of toilet facilities generally in the hotel with just one ladies and gents and one disabled near the main pool area which is nowhere near enough, there were people queuing constantly. During our stay 3 times I went in the ladies near the main pool and there was no toilet tissue, not very good. Inside the hotel there were two toilets for ladies and a gents toilet on the entertainment floor 3 and two toilets for ladies and a gents toilet near reception on floor 6. During our stay the hotel was extending the decking area around the pool bar and I understand quite a lot of refurbishment has been done recently, they really need to address the toilets issue as part of these changes. All in all we did have a nice holiday, but would not return because of the issues I have mentioned above.

Just arrived back from a weeks stay at the Rubicon, on arrival we were given a lovely room with a sea view in B block. Staff worked very hard, they were tirelessly cleaning and keeping up standards of that of a 4 star hotel. The grounds were lovely and the resort was far bigger than expected. The room was your standard continental bedroom, but none the less clean and had all the basics. However there are some down falls to this hotel which made it pretty 'average' and not that of a 4 star hotel. Your sheets weren't changed during the weeks holiday, the AC in the room didn't work as well as we hoped, but we had a balcony so left the door open most nights. As mentioned on some reviews the lack of facilities around the other pools in the resort was a bit of a pain, the hotel would definitely benefit from more pool bars. A lot of reviews have mentioned the lack of toilets, it is pain I agree however it didn't really bother me walking up another flight of stairs. The main issue for me on this holiday, was the food. I cannot fault the choice, however the food seemed to always be cold, we tried hot plates but still found it a problem. We also tried going as soon as the restaurant was open for lunch and dinner but food was still cold, however I would recommend going early to avoid the crowds! On the first night we went for dinner after a long day of travelling and we were greeted by a lot of flies on the salads and fruit. This did unfortunately put me off, maybe glass covers, like the pool bar had would avoid this and disappointment. All in all we both had a relaxing week, we enjoyed going into the town, the volcano excursion arranged by Thomson and the camel ride was great fun! I would recommend a stay at the Rubicon, however be mindful of the disadvantages I've mentioned!

Room Tip: Go to the restaurants at earlier times and the area around block B seemed quieter, more for couples.

Where do I start. Our welcome to the RP was not what we expected. One of the three rooms booked was not ready, bearing in mind it was close to 9.30 at night so this should not be a problem to be able to check in, go to your allotted room x start your holiday. One room was given to one of the grandparents with two child beds in x miles away from anywhere. and only two of the rooms were together even after we requested this. we finally got our rooms at 11.30, but one set of grand parents had to put up with the room with the extra beds in etc and were told to come to reception at 11.oo next day x they would change their room. this they did but they were stil not able to get in their room until 2.30. This hotel is beautiful, clean and modern, but there are many things that could be improved on. They charge 17 euros to hire the room safe per week, we have travelled extensively and this is the most expensive we have come across, in fact they are usually free. You are unable to get bottled water without charge. There is an acute lack of toilets anywhere on resort. there is one ladies and one gents covering all the pool areas, apart from going into the main hotel, and even there one of the floors, where the main buffet restaurant Is there are none. Three of the pools share the one bar and the other pools are quite a walk away and they are without toilet facilities or bars. we visited both the Italian and the Asian a la carte restaurants and found them both great with good service. The buffet was good but choice could be improved on, there was pork every night, and the same three pasta dishes for at least 6 nights of our stay. Entertainment for adults was dire. To me a piano bar is usually the last bar open, and generally people go there for a last tipple and maybe a little sing along. this piano bar was very different. there was one pianist and two different singers over the 7 day period we were there and they did 5 or 6 songs and that was it finished. You could also go down to the main entertainment room, but there was no air con and it was like a sauna. The rooms are lovely and spacious, kept clean and there is all that you need. The area directly in front of our patio (we were in room 8912) has a bed of volcanic grit, you cannot walk to the pool (6 steps away) without your shoes and the grit was all over our room. These ares we felt should at least have some stepping stones or even better flatten it!! everything said, we still had a good holiday, though I am not sure if we would return.

This hotel has everything you need, fantastic food, flexible dining options, friendly and hardworking staff and spotlessly clean public areas and grounds.

We returned for the 6th time to 3 new A La Carte restaurants , all quality food and service especially Carlo in the Italian, very friendly and welcoming. These new restaurants are a great addition.

The food in the main buffet restaurant is also very good , lots of choice. The staff work so hard but remain friendly and attentive, special mention to Salvador, a true gentleman.

Had some great nights in the Beefeater Pub with Wallace and Danny, great guys, very friendly.

I would like to thank Paula, Stephanie and all the staff throughout the resort for another fantastic holiday and making us feel so welcome and look forward to returning very soon.

Keep doing what you are doing H10 Rubicon Palace.

We are a couple in our early 20's and travelled at the end of July 2014.

Accommodation
- On arrival, we were not happy with our accommodation. It was on the ground floor and was not close to the amenities. When arriving at 11pm it was also very dark and there was no outdoor lighting which we found to be quite dangerous when walking down 20+ stairs!
- We were also greeted to 2 cockroaches in our room - not a great first impression however we realise that is not the fault of the hotel and they had been putting down some form of pesticide to remove this problem and we didn't see any around the complex for the rest of the holiday.
- We put in a request to change rooms and were granted a new one the very next morning
- We were put on the first floor near to the pools and this was perfect for us. The staff were very helpful with this change at very efficient.
-Comfortable room and had everything we needed. Lovely and modern, spacious and cleaned every day.

Staff
- We found the staff to be very helpful, polite and happy. They were happy to help with our room change and were not offended with our requests.
- Staff in the restaurant were very hard working and were constantly refilling the food supplies or cleaning.
- There were photo staff who circled the pool daily and at night asking to take your photo. This seemed like a nice idea until they persisted on taking intimate shots of us. This soon became very awkward and uncomfortable for everyone involved! Including all the onlookers...

Food
- Lovely selection for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
- Food was not piping hot all the time but it was never cold as it was constantly restocked with fresh portions.
- Drinks were OK
- We had one meal in the Italian A LaCarte restaurant as part of the All Inclusive and it was a lovely experience from start to finish.

Overall Experience
- Pools were cold; even the heated pool wasn't very comfortable
- Pool beds were always available however lots of people like to pop towels out early in the morning for the best ones!
- The entertainment was a hit or miss. The animation team tried hard but a (badly) mimed performance of Grease can only be so good. The external entertainment that had been drafted in such as the magic show and gymnastics were very impressive and were enjoyed by the audience.
- Lots to do during the day - piano bar, Irish bar, sports facilities etc.
- There are lots of children at the hotel but this wasn't an issue...they do offer an adult only breakfast area and there is a selection of pools so you can choose the peace and quiet if you wish!

Overall, a lovely hotel that has lots to offer. We had a great, relaxing week away thanks to the peaceful ambiance and hard working staff and would definitely return.

Room Tip: - Ask for a room on the first floor - Don't be afraid to ask for a room change - they were very...

Very impressed upon arrival - beautiful hotel & grounds.
Glass of cava waiting for us upon arrival, check in was fairly rapid.
Driven to our room, which had a huge balcony & stunning views out to sea (I had emailed prior to arrival to request this). Very clean with no creepy crawlies
Food: excellent, always found something... Desserts - delicious!!
Pools: lots of choice & plenty sunbeds... Sometimes a little chilly when you first get in... Though that was welcome in the hot afternoon sun.
We found the Staff very attentive & generally couldn't do enough for us.
Only downside was the lack of bars & toilets around the smaller pools (as in there aren't any) - it's quite a trek back to the main area.
Could be 5* if they sort the little niggles out... All in all fab hol (despite all the kids - there are loads!!).
