“Great and terrible”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

Where to start....
This hotel has really positive, great aspects, along with some poor/diabolical aspects too. We would go back if it came in at the right price, and onlyRoyal Elite service.
Room
C block, overlooking the beach, could hear the waves crashing which was lovely. Unspoilt view of the sea and fuerteventura. Aircon was a complete joke, broke down for 8 days. Despite several engineer visits, it was finally admitted that the main aircon to the whole hotel had broken down. Whilst the assistant director was understanding and provided us with a large fan for the room, the excuse that its "hot" in lanzarote in August was somewhat confusing. The fan only came after a written complaint was emailed and, a subsequent telephone call from Jet2, after we had spent 6 days trying to resolve.
Royal elite
Worth every penny, as there is a private lounge, with help yourself branded drinks and snacks and a barman waiting at night to serve. Big leather settees and wifi. Wifi is sporadic but generally ok. We noticed large queues at all other bars every night...did not see this in the lounge.
Another bonus with royal elite is the private breakfast room, waiter service for drinks and coffee, no queues and a fantastic range of food. The main restaurants were a complete bun fight for breakfast, after 2pm at lunch and after 8:30pm for dinner-you would think people had not eaten for 3weeks the way they acted!
Pools-4 pools, all packed with inflatables and water guns, despite signs saying they were not to be used. No place to go and have a quiet swim. Hit and miss if you got a sunbed, especially in a shaded area. If you got a bed after 9:30 you were doing well!
Restaurants-food ok, and as expected, samey, but cooked really well, and a fantastic selection of fresh fruit, meats and fish.
Spa excellent,
Mexican restaurant was the best feature but book an early slot (before 7:45) and get a seat by the window as there is no air conditioning.
Staff-reception staff miserable and do the bare necessary to deal with your query. We were recommended this hotel by the director of the Belive Lanzarote Resort, however, when we go back to his hotel in October, we will tell him how good his hotel is in comparison
This hotel is better than the gran Castillo next door, where we have stayed.
It has potential to be 5 star, if the rooms had a makeover, and effective management around the restaurants, pool and reception. We will try this hotel again if we see a good deal to return, and hope that the management team really take on board comments being made, which are pretty consistent in most of the reviews we have seen.

Room Tip: C block level 5/6 or d block. If we stay again we want d block floor 6. We would also book a suite.

We stayed here as a family of four for 10 days in August in a normal sea view room. The room was clean and basic with a fantastic view from the balcony over to Fuerteventura. The hotel is very large but only takes a day or two to work out where everything is. If you are staying in a room without free water then locating the free water refilling stations is a must as we got through gallons and it would of cost us a fortune if we had to buy it!

The food was great all the time with more choice than you could possibly need and the staff were constantly cleaning up and changing partly used food for fresh. The breakfast could be a bit hectic but on a self-service basis with the number of people staying it was never going to be quiet! We tried both the Chinese and the Mexican and both were very good and we were especially pleasantly surprised by the Mexican as it is the pool restaurant during the day and is very nicely transformed in the evenings.

It is true that the sunbeds can be in short supply if you leave it too late but in the height of summer there are not many hotels that provide sunbeds all day to everyone! If you have children then finding a spot with a shade is a must so getting up early is the price to pay!

We used the free bus service to Playa Blanca and we also walked there which is not too far along a nice promenade. We also walked over the hill to Papagayo beach which was wonderful. The walk is a little 'rugged' but the beach is completely unspoilt and if you feel like walking to the the 2nd 3rd and 4th beaches even more people free!
We used the spa a couple of times which was appreciated by all and children are allowed in until 3pm.

We booked a couple of trips through the Tourist Ticket office in the Rubicon Marina which is run by an English lady who is very helpful with details of trips. The trip on the Rachel C Schooner and the trip to the Volcanoes are both recommended.

All in all we had a wonderful time and would consider going back were there not so many other places to visit!

Just returned from this hotel & I must say what a fantastic hotel, nothing was too much trouble for the staff, who were very friendly & worked very hard. I must also say, it was good to see the Director walking about most days, interacting with his staff as well as holiday makers. Our room (B419) had the most amazing view of Los Lobos. Our 12 year old daughter also has not complaints.. Cant wait to go back next year - sheer bliss. Thank you to everyone.

Room Tip: B419 fab view & massive bed!

Firstly, the hotel is in a great location if you want peace and quiet but a bit of a walk to the centre of Playa Blanca. There is a complementary bus service but it tended to be over subscribed. The food was on the whole good if a bit predictable and it is a bit of a scrum to get your food. The only dissapointment was the oriental restaurent which has to be prebooked and serves the worst chinese food i have ever had. The rooms are fine but we had two adults and two children in one room and the sofa bed is a joke, quite literally as it collapsed twice to the amusement of the kids and no matter how many times we had their maintenaince staff look at the bed every night the slats would fall out. Our worst experiance however was the airconditioning, which for eight out of the eleven days we were there did not work. A disaster as Lanzerote was experiancing a heat wave. Apparantly the system just broke under pressure but it took six visits to the friendly if uninformed reception staff to find out what was happening.Overall the hotel needs to be better at giving information to guests, invest some money in infrastructure, train the maintenance staff not to be so rude and please, please sort out the sunbeds and shades. Everywhere you go in the hotel there are notices not to reserve sunbeds but by 9.30am every day they are all gone. One more thing. They offer an all inclusive service but the bars all stop serving free drinks at eleven.

Room Tip: Don't expect sofa bed to be any good. Don't bother with oriental restaurent.Take your own to...

We stayed at this hotel from the 8th until the 16th of August with the all inclusive package.

Very good to Excellent:

-Our room had an amazing view. Thank you so much for this as this was our highlight during our stay. Thank you Ester!

-The restaurant staff was impeccable. There is always at least one bad apple and we honestly, could not find one member of this team that was not helpful and/or graceful. Really, one of the best teams I have ever seen.

-We were happy with the location as it was walking distance to the most stunning beach in Lanzarote (Papagayo). Please note there is no bar or facilities at this beach.

-Some of the reception staff: Ester, Kujiona (?) and Isabel. Really helpful even when they were under lots of pressure from a busy desk.

-Food from the all inclusive regular restaurant was for the most part very good. The grill was excellent. Always healthy choices of fresh grill meat, poultry and fish. Breakfast was also very, very good. The grill chef (Salem?) also very, very good.

-I enjoyed the walk to Playa Dorada and also the bus service was pretty good (although the hotel needs to organise the waiting line and ensure everyone will get there, even if that means to hire a second bus). The beach is beautiful. Turquoise waters, cafes, sunbeds and umbrellas available.

-The chill out bar upstairs. Great music, best bar staff compared to the other bars and beautiful decor and views.

-The lifeguards. They tried to help with the sunbeds situation as much as they could.

Some not so good:

-Room needs a bit of updating (small and old TV, not a very good mattress, etc.)

-Juices and all inclusive alcohol were un-drinkable. The quality is worse than in our all inclusive from Egypt, and that is a pretty low standard.

-Entertainment team - although they were desperately trying, it was obvious they lacked the leadership and support from the hotel. From their uniforms to their skills, not good.
Few tips:hire a DJ to make clear announcements. Label the pools so people know where to go and hire more staff as you can't entertain a 1200 people group with 1 or 2 members. Instead of making them do the silly dance that only makes guests uncomfortable, provide them with some training on how to teach a good engaging aqua gym class. Get a few members of staff in the pool, football court, etc, so the activity starts and people join. This was one of the weaker points of this resort.

-The Chinese restaurant. Quite a disappointment. We ended up cancelling the Mexican one considering the poor experience on this one. Greasy food with terrible taste.

Very bad:

-The gym - 1 star hotel? Most of the machines are broken and there is a lawsuit waiting to happen with the only treadmill that works. Is broken so only starts at 7.8 k/h without notice and the front is cracked so you can cut your leg when it pushes you up.

-Adele and Maria Luisa from reception - Awful. Quite a contrast with their colleagues. They should NOT be working with customers. Unhelpful and rude. What a contrast with their colleagues.

-The sport facilities - Tennis court, mini-golf court, football balls.Seriously, how much can it cost to have a ball in a semi-good shape? Even if you have to buy one a week, what are we talking about, 10 Euros?

-The night entertainment. There was one show with Gypsies that was ok but the other 6 were terrible.

-The internet. Terrible signal. Even the computers to pay for at the lobby were slow and did not have Skype.

Again, some was very, very good. I think they should use their good team members to help on getting the other areas up to their standard. Then it would be a very good hotel and not a mixed experience for customers. WOuld I come back? Probably not which is a shame as I thought it has lots of potential.

Room Tip: We got a view direct into the beach with no pool in between. Beautiful view.

My and my new wife have just come back from our first visit to Sandos Papagayo and we cannot tell people how excellant this hotel is. The food is brillant although it does say you have to give 24 hours notice if you want to go the mexican or oriental restaurant, with our experiance you are better giving 48 hours notice becasue it does get full really quickly.
The entertainment staff where so helpful and funny. The rooms are amazing, we upgraded to the royal elite service which is definatly worth doing. You get a private lounge stcoked with soft drinks alcoholic drinks and also light snacks, you get a priavte room for breakfast in the morning which is definatly much better, guranteed sea view room and much more. The only advice I give when purchasing the elite service is to do it through your airline and not direct with the hotel as we got charged a little more than couples who had done it through the airline.

The pools are amazing we never struggled to get a sun bed. In all this is the bext resort / hotel I have ever been to it was even better than the maldives that we went to 4 years ago.

It is definatly a place people should visit it is just and excellant place to go. It should be a 5 star hotel not a 4 star. A must see hotel

Room Tip: Upgrade to the royal elite service
