This is a large modern hotel complex situated on the very edge of Playa Blanca. It is spacious, clean, well maintained and has good facilities. The staff are friendly and the rooms are large and well appointed. It has a number of large swimming pools, extensive sun terraces and ample sun beds.

The hotels location is both its biggest asset (very quiet) and its biggest downfall (no infrastructure nearby), depending on how you look at it. If I had one criticism its the food. Don't get me wrong everything I ate was fresh and well cooked, the only problem was there was nothing exciting. All the basics were covered but, there was nothing but the basics. If you are a plain eater you'll be delighted, if you want something interesting walk down to one of the restaurants down by the marina.

We are a married couple in our late 40’s that wanted some winter sun and with the political unrest in Egypt, Lanzarote was the ideal location. We flew out of the UK on the 24.02.13 for a 1 week stay, All Inclusive at the Sandos Papagayo Arena Hotel in Playa Blanca. We travelled with First Choice (Thomson) and paid £1643.00 which included a room upgrade of £504 to a Junior Suite (recommended as it includes the Royal Elite Service) and onsite airport parking at Gatwick North Terminal (approx. £43).

Airport & Transfer.

The airport staff at Arrecife were fantastic. My wife needed special assistance in the airport and the friendly staff were on hand from departing the aircraft, through baggage collection right up to boarding the coach for our transfer to the hotel. The transfer itself takes approximately 30 minutes including a couple of other drop offs although we sat on the coach for about 20 minutes before departing, waiting for other passengers that seem to have a delay in collecting their cases from the baggage carousel. This is perfectly understandable though as you will always get those who receive their cases quicker than others and this wasn’t a problem.

Arriving at the Hotel and Checking In.

There are always 3 or more hotel staff that speak fairly good English at check in and we were dealt with fairly promptly although this will obviously change during peak season months, as we only arrived with 3 or 4 other guests so it was easy for the staff to deal with us. There is Orange juice and wine available in reception on arrival, although we were not made aware of this by the reception staff so it is a kind of help yourself type offer. We did see other guests arriving later in the week and they did exactly that, or someone mentioned to them that it was for new guests. The girls at reception will allocate you a room or Junior Suite and you will be fitted with your wrist band, currently Gold for Royal Elite guests, Blue for regular guests & kids under 16 get a Lime Green one. You will also be given 2 credit card type door swipe keys and a map and an explanation of how to find your room. Many reports say it’s extremely confusing to navigate your way around the hotel, I would agree that it is a huge hotel complex but we soon got to grips with it and it wasn’t a problem. You will also be given a Safe key (20 euros deposit) this key goes in a keyhole inside the Safe which allows you to set up a new combination code outside the Safe. Some guests said they spent a while trying to find the key hole. We were not offered any assistance getting our cases to the room although there are trolleys available, so help yourself as it’s a lot easier than carrying your cases around such a large hotel complex.

Room Upgrades, are they worth it?

The Junior Suite includes; (approx. £252/person)
Only in Block ‘D’. We were in D640.
A guaranteed sea view.
Daily night bed cover service.
Good night chocolates.
Mini bar with soft drinks on arrival.
Daily large bottled water replacement service (x2).
Pool towels in room.
Bottle of Cava on arrival.
Bathrobe and slippers.
Aloe Vera basket and bath salts (or similar).
Sweets and candies for kids.
Kettle
2x 32 inch flat screen tvs.
Soluble coffee and tea service with replacement (Dolce Gusto).
Safety deposit box included.
Exclusive access to the Royal Elite Lounge, equipped with comfortable leather sofas, free fast internet corners, free daily newspapers, tea, coffee, refreshment snacks and high quality alcoholic drinks (genuine spirits not local equivalents).
Exclusive access to a much quieter Royal Elite breakfast area with waitress service for your drinks.

Royal Elite Service Standard Room;
This allows you the exclusive access to the breakfast and lounge areas mentioned above in a standard room which should have a pool view. This is available at extra cost as an upgrade but I am not totally sure how much, although this could be an option for some who do not want or need the facilities or expense of a Junior Suite.

Our Opinion.

We stayed in a Junior Suite which includes all the Royal Elite Services. The Suite was clean and spacious on arrival. There is an entrance type area with a dining table and bar type arrangement. The mini bar was stocked daily although we only used the bottled water, you will pay if you use the soft drinks and they need replacing. The lounge has an Ipod docking area, some comfortable chairs (fold out beds) and a flat screen TV. A balcony with sea/ocean view. The bedroom was large, another TV, balcony 2, again with sea/ocean view. There are sunbeds, some chairs and a table on each of your 2 balconies. The beds were 2 large singles pushed together to make a huge double, although strangely they were made up as singles and could push apart quite easily so it may be worth requesting a double bed before arriving, via email, they do reply. There is plenty of storage space and the room was cleaned to a fairly good standard each day, normally while we were at breakfast so the cleaning staff certainly do work hard and fast. We think the Junior Suites were given priority due to the cost as some other guests in standard rooms were not being serviced until the afternoon, again understandable in such a large hotel. Bed linen and bath towels etc. all really nice and clean and the bathroom and toilet/bidet also cleaned perfectly. We did have an issue with a few ants in our bathroom but after contacting reception it was dealt with within an hour. Our room could have had a bit more light above the mirror in the bedroom, so women be warned; you’ll need to do your make up in the bathroom where there are plenty of lights above the bathroom mirrors plus a hairdryer and shaving mirror for us men. The shower was really powerful and easy to adjust to exactly the right temperature so no worries there. The Hotel has its own shop, a hair salon, table tennis, Pool and Air Soccer tables. Crazy golf and 3 large swimming pools of which one was heated and all are clean. There is a Gym/Spa area offering several treatments, the Gym is free but treatments need to be pre booked and are chargeable. The staff are very friendly and hardworking and do their best to make your stay enjoyable, they are a credit to the hotel chain. The public areas were always clean and well maintained, including the toilets. There were never any issues over sun beds although maybe there will be during peak season. There were plenty during our stay.

Food.

Hmmm! This was our only slight concern. Breakfast was good in the Royal Elite or main area (same food in both) with a selection of fresh fruits, cereals, fried breakfast, cold meats and croissants. There are plenty of places to eat around the hotel; it was just the food quality that was a slight issue. I’ve often been described as a human dustbin so it’s not that I’m fussy. Food would look great at the buffet bar only to be disappointing when you arrived back at your table and tasted it. It was never quite as you’d expected. Having spoken to other guests they expressed the same thoughts so I think its safe to say this is where improvements could be made. However it was clean and hygienic and if you looked about for long enough there was always something you could find to eat. The Italian section is based at the rear of the main restaurant, serving pastas and pizzas, again not good. The Chinese and Mexican need to be pre booked at the hotel reception at least 24hrs before your chosen dining time, if you fancy this, pick your evening and book when you arrive as they are only open on certain nights and places are limited, I would think even more so during peak season. We have had far better in the UK at an average takeaway and unfortunately, hand on heart, I couldn’t recommend either. We didn’t eat in the French Restaurant although our friends did and said it was fantastic, this is not part of your All Inclusive package. You will need to pre book and an average meal with a bottle of wine will cost you around 60-70 euros.

Location.

Playa Blanca was a small friendly fishing village which is slowly being built up but it is still very picturesque. There are your typical Big English Breakfast places and Irish Pubs but also traditional Spanish bars too. Rubicon Marina is within walking distance about 20mins and Playa Blanca town about another 15mins walk from the Hotel, just follow the coast line. Papagayo beach is about 40mins walk in the opposite direction and over rough uneven ground, not for anyone with mobility issues. The beach is lovely but this is a nudist’s beach so don’t be surprised by people wandering around naked. Of course, this is optional. All worth visiting during your stay.

Car Hire.

We hired a Mini Cooper Convertible from the hotel (PlusCar) this was 36 euros per day based on a 3 day hire. Price goes up or down depending on the amount of time you hire the car for. I then had to pay insurance and local taxes which added another 57 euros, total 165 euros but well worth it for the fun we had. The car hire prices start from as little as 12 euros/day. I found it easy to drive in Lanzarote and the roads and sign posts are fairly easy to understand with very little traffic compared to the UK.

Excursions.

Timanfaya Mountain. If you drive yourself it will take you 15/20mins from the hotel. 9 euros each to access the mountain which includes a demo of the Geezers etc. and a 30min coach tour at the top, absolutely breath taking. There is also a fantastic restaurant up there which we would recommend. This is a trip worth taking.

Would we Return?

Yes we would and to the same hotel. For a bit of winter sun, a pretty good service and most importantly a place you can trust the cleanliness and hygiene you can’t go far wrong. OK the food wasn’t brilliant but it was OK, and the overall package was good. We would recommend this hotel and this location, probably best for couples, the over 35s and families with young kids where they have eveything in one huge hotel complex. Good caring, friendly staff.

Thanks for reading, I hope this review helps in your holiday selection.

the hotel is big with plenty of bars to choose from 5 in total i think, loved the chillout bar but a bit to chilli in feb at night.
the elite breakfast room was a nice touch a bit like being in a little restaurant tea coffee and juice served by waitresses help yourself to food, the main dining was just as you would expect from a hotel of this size the food was nice with plenty to choose from in all honesty i can not think of anything to moan about we intend to return hopefully in the same room later this year.

My husband and I and his parents visited this hotel for a week the end of January/February 2013. We were blown away by the hotel, the staff, the food. I was so relaxed and the weather was beautiful. We went walking every day on the beautiful path outside the hotel gates for miles and miles on end ... and other ads we walked to the side of the hotels to the beautiful beaches and into he desert. We played tennis, went to the gym, did aqua aerobics and I must say it was brilliant. The hotel staff were great and the place was oh so clean. Great big hotel rooms. We got to eat n the Mexican and Asian restaurants. We will definitely be returning.

We visit this hotel every November and February and have done since 2007. As always, we had a brilliant time. The staff are brilliant - friendly and cheerful and will do anything for you. The Papayago has everything you could want. The food in the buffet restaurant is great and if you have any special dietary needs, just tell them what you need. The new Mexican restaurant is great, buy you need to book well in advance as it is very popular. The Asian is also very nice. weather was great, but it does get a bit windy. The hotel overlooks the sea, and has a paved walkway that stretches for miles. My wife and I are retired, but I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone. We will definitely be returning in the winter.

Room Tip: Most rooms have a sea view. All the rooms we have stayed in are spacious and the beds are huge.
