Had an amazing week at The Volcan. It is a lovely hotel, very spacious, lots of pools and nice seating areas. The breakfasts were excellent in the lovely restaurant overlooking the pool. Our room was spacious with separate bathroom, toilet, dressing area, large bed with large tv, a sitting area with a couch and two chairs and tea + coffee facilities, then a superb balcony overlooking the sea and harbour, which got the afternoon sun. Staff were all friendly and helpful. Lovely restaurants and bars within walking distance, great promenade which stretched for miles in each direction. Weather was fantastic, especially for January. Will definitely return next year.

This was our fourth visit to this hotel so my comments are set against the background that we like this hotel!!
I can see debates earlier in revues about whether or not this is a "five star" hotel but these always seem to be spurious arguments given that there is no consistent worldwide standard about what stars mean they are therefore meaningless to some extent.
So is the Volcan one of the best hotels in Playa Blance ? .... absolutely, is it the best?..... well I havent stayed in all of them so I wouldnt know but against the local competition its definitely in the top league.
The hotel is wonderfully spread out on several levels which means that its always possible to find a quiet spot. the rooms are large with seperate bathroom area, bedroom area, seating area and balcony. We also like the fact that the balconies are enclosed which again gives you a feeling of solitude and your own space. The layout of the hotel over a hillside can seem quiet confusing at first but once you become oriented it has a wonderful village feel.
All of the staff are great, friendly, courteous and cant do enough for you.
The adjacent Marina Rubicon has a smattering or restaurants and bars and a couple of small convenience stores with the main Playa Blanca town being about a 20 minute walk along a very pleasant promenade. I would say that the whole resort (whilst having everything you need) is for those looking for a quiet, relaxing break and the Volcan similarly is relaxing rather than full of "in your face" entertainment although there are various activities put on throughout the day.
We have always been around December, January so it might be more lively in summer?
SInce as I said we have been there four times I think I can offer a couple of comments which will hopefully be seen as constructive.
The rooms are still lovely but are getting a little tired in places so if the hotel wants to stay at the top it needs to keep the improvement rolling ( although it was nice to see that TV and media services have improved with wifi being better although still a bit patchy).
The buffet restaurant which is consistently good does need to look at the layout as the positioning of the grill station always leads to a bit of a bottleneck, it should be moved so that it stands on its own allowing easier access to the areas around it.
A minor point but it would also be nice if the hotel could make its "THE" loyalty card a bit more interesting, as far as we can see all it achieves is to get you free towels for the sunbed area, it would be better if it did make repeat customers feel a little more like their loyalty was being rewarded.
Having said those last bits its still a fantastic place and we will be back for more!

Room Tip: Pay a bit more for sea view rooms as they are higher up and get more sun

I'll be as quick as I can...

HOTEL: Its quite big. Lots of rooms/corridors/different areas. Make sure you explore or you might miss something. Well maintained & pretty communal areas. Didn't try the adults only section or the spa as we have a 2.5 year old
ROOM: A little dated, but fine. Spacious, clean & quiet
POOLS: Main pool is very cold in Jan. Didnt see a single person swimming in the main pool. There are also 2 very small heated pools (inc 0.5m kids pool). NB 'Heated' does NOT mean jacuzzi(!), but it means they are easy to swim in. But they are SMALL pools. I think there is another heated pool in the adults only section too.
LOCATION: There is a beautiful marina literally on the doorstep which has numerous great restaurants/bars/coffee places with fantastic views (if you like boats!). Try the restaurant 1 min up the hill (towards the old stone fort) that overlooks everything - wonderful tapas. Playa Blanca (local coastal town with more places to eat and drink) 20-25 mins walk away (or short bus ride). Sounds a long way, but when the sun is shining and you can look at the sea, its fine.
BEACH: 2 beaches within walking distance (we only tried 1).15 min walk through the mariner & along the promenade). Golden sand. No pebbles. About 200m wide. Quiet in Jan. Water very cold, but people were swimming. €3 per day per lounger & per umbrella. A couple of places to buy drinks.
FOOD: Breakfast was good. Good 3 star I would say. Plenty to choose from. Ate at local places for lunch & dinner (which were all really nice and not too expensive - we spent about €600 for the week's lunches & dinners)
WIFI: Nothing free in room, only reception. Marina has free wifi in the places we went to
OTHER: Not the place if you want a lively party holiday, or want loads of hotel activities all day. Lots of older folk & lots of people with small kids (including us). But we were looking for a nice quiet holiday, so that was fine with us. Weather was 22/23 degrees & sunny every day - but it felt warmer than this.

Would recommend.

My husband and I were looking for a relaxing getaway in the middle of Winter, where our 4 year old son would also be catered for and the Hotel Volcan generally provided this.

Positives:
We had booked a room with a sea view high up and we were not disappointed. The room was airy and the decor was generally very pleasant. The beds were very comfortable, so all 3 of us slept soundly during our stay. The standard of cleaning and bedlinen and towel changes by room service was very good and I did receive the additional pillows I requested from the pillow menu.
Negatives:
- The soft furnishings could do with upgrading, as they are a bit dated and faded.
- The bathroom requires better venting to get rid of the dank gaseous smell, that is evident at times.

Positives:
We were staying on a Bed and Breakfast basis so I can't comment on the evening dining facilities as we chose to eat early in little restaurants down in the Rubicon Marina and further along the Playa Blanca. The breakfast buffet was of a fairly high standard in terms of the food choice on offer and we particularly liked the fresh fruits and enjoyed the freshly cooked omelettes and pancakes on occasion!!

Negatives:
- We found that the size of the buffet area often seemed inadequate to deal with the sheer volume of people that descended each morning and this was during a very quiet time of the year!
- While there was always a supervisor at the entrance to the dining room each morning to "meet and greet" and direct guests to their tables, we found that there scarcely ever seemed to be a similar person to oversee how guests were fairing with finding items, or whether they needed anything. In this regard there seems to be a distinct shortage of staff to clear the tables and those on duty seemed quite overworked.
- One example of such absence of assistance and lack of attention to detail which really irked me was that the "Burco" type water boilers provided for making tea did not actually bring the water to boiling point, which of course resulted in not being able to make a proper pot of tea despite the fact that there were plenty of ceramic pots provided, along with jugs and a nice selection of teas. After 2 mornings of awful tea I asked the supervisor at the door if there was another source of boiling water and I was directed to the coffee making machines. These machines did in fact provide boiling water however, because they dispense a preset volume it took about 7 measures to fill a pot and resulted in a queue of people forming impatiently waiting to get their coffee!! When I asked another morning if I could simply get one of the thermos flasks that are provided to those who order coffee at their table, instead filled with boiling water (presumably in the kitchen or service station where the waiting staff fill them with coffee) my request was ignored and I was again referred to the coffee machine by both a supervisor and by a manager who happened to have popped into the dining room.
While I'm aware that coffee tends to be the norm for breakfast, generally when one is staying in a 5 star establishment a simple request for a pot of boiling - not hot - water to be brought to the table seems a small matter and it's the attention to such details that make the difference overall.

Positives:
On a good note, we had deliberately sought a hotel that had a mini club provided and we were extremely pleased with the level of care that our young son received from Giuni (and from Ana later in the week) throughout our stay. Even though he was the only child most days - apart from another young boy on 2 days towards the end - Giuni made every effort to accommodate us so that our son got some playtime and we got some adult relaxation time by the pool in the sun. The girls did some lovely crafts with him and he even got to make a volcano from papier mache which he was so proud to show to his teacher in preschool when he returned home. He got to spend 2 or 3 hours playing each morning and I also participated in some of the free activities. In particular I loved the stretching, pilates and yoga classes (particularly when they were held outdoors under the pagoda) so I was able to have some level of fitness restored on my holiday!! I also really enjoyed the oil painting class - the teacher was excellent - and now I have my own painting as a souvenir of my holiday hanging at home!! We also took part in the silk painting classes along with the sangria making and wine tasting class and Giuni made these such fun, plus it was a great way to meet other likeminded people and make some new friends!

Positives:
The layout of the hotel and the design of the garden really appealed to us, as there are lots of little nooks and crannies to relax, so that you're not too close to other guests, which is great for chilling.
Negatives:
- We chose Hotel Volcan specifically because it indicated a heated pool. All of the pools (apart from what is supposed to be the kiddies pool) were freezing and nobody was going in swimming. A few days into our holiday the supposedly heated pool was drained and works commenced on it which meant noise and dust nearby. It was very disappointing not to get any swimming facilities as we deliberately travelled to the Canaries to avail of the higher temperatures which mainland Spain does not enjoy in Winter. Again this is something that a 5 star hotel should provide and surely should have been rectified without the necessity to use an indoor heated pool.
- There were also works in the atrium area where the ceiling was being repaired and the scaffolding meant one had to go around the long way to get to rooms at that side.
- The service at the pool cafe bar is very slow, again due to poor staffing levels and the waitresses have to take a very circuitous route from the kitchen around the pool/garden which meant that our food was totally cold when it did arrive!
- It would be better if the kiddies pool on the higher level of the garden was labelled as such with a clear sign. We found that due to the lack of an adults heated pool that adults tended to sunbathe around the kids pool (maybe thinking it a plunge pool due to its shape) and were then annoyed when the only child in the place came along and wanted to splash and play in it.
- Also the floor of the kids pool is much too slippy. The texture of the white paint applied to it is very unsuitable as it has little or no slip resistance.
That said, we were very pleased with the vigilance and friendliness of the pool guards - they were very pleasant to our little boy and kept a very close eye on him at all times and kept the children's pool and the nearby upper pool very clean.

On a final note we were very disappointed with the Hotel that they did not grant our request for a late checkout, which we requested several days before our departure. We explained that because our flight was not until the evening and because we'd a young child that we would like to stay on in the room for perhaps 3 extra hours on our departure day and that we were prepared to pay a small supplement for the service. We were told all week to ask nearer the time and even the evening before didn't get a definitive answer, which meant on the day that we had to pack anyway to be ready, only to be given a negative when we asked after breakfast. While our luggage was stored for us and we were permitted to use a bathroom near the gym, it meant our last day was very messy and disjointed. Again, I would have expected that a 5 star Hotel could facilitate our request for 3 extra hours - especially given that we offered to pay - when the hotel was clearly not at full capacity, in order that guests might depart on a positive note rather than with a slightly sour taste on the final day?!!

We have just returned from a short stay at the Volcano Hotel, we had a wonderful holiday, the staff are friendly and helpful, our room had a fabulous location overlooking the harbour and the marina.
We stayed in the "adults only " club area of the hotel where the ambience was quiet and peaceful, the breakfasts were one the best I've experienced and the evening open bar was a great way to chat to other guests over a drink before dinner.
The location of the hotel was good for access to the promenade and the many restaurants in the Marina area. We recommend this hotel and hope to return soon.

Room Tip: Top floor rooms have good views
