We stayed at this hotel between 17th and 28th November 2013 and previously in February 2013 for one week. Towards the end of our week in February the quality and quantity of food in the restaurant during the evening changed to such a degree that we felt we had walked in to a cafeteria. Thinking that this was maybe just a one off glitch we decided to book again for November. To our surprise the quality of the evening meal had not improved. The food served was luke warm and the vegetables were limp, the variety was poor. In our opinion the food was well below the hotels 5 star standard.
For two nights during our stay the hotel Manager was present in the restaurant together with the chef and on these nights the evening meal was of a much higher standard with a far wider choice of menu. On the following nights the food quality and variety slipped back again.
On one night we ate in the hotels Italian restaurant, the food was bland and lacked typical Italian taste. A sweet was delivered to our table frozen.
The hotels sun lounges on the pool side were dirty and grubby and following a complaint some were replaced with new sun lounges.
It is our opinion that this hotel is cutting costs at the expense of the tourist and is not deserving of its 5 star rating.
This is a terrible shame as the hotel has beautiful grounds and an ideal location overlooking the harbour.

Room Tip: Ask for pool view with no obsructions

Just back from a short week long break at this hotel in the adult only club section, which our small party thought was worth every extra penny to have access to the amenities on offer over and above the standard hotel stay.
The rooms are the same as elsewhere in the hotel, which means they are spacious, with large beds, lounge area, good sized bathrooms and balcony, in our case overlooking the marina. The club section has its own breakfast area with an excellent choice from a buffet style offering as well as waitress table service for individual requests for eggs, bacon, etc, the food was always fresh, varied and inviting.
Hot drinks and fresh fruit where always available from this area for use by the club guests, throughout the day.
A roof top sun lounging area was accessible for the club only with two Jacuzzis, swimming pool bar, plenty of comfortable loungers and beds, etc, plus waitress service if required.
Late afternoon a selection of local cakes and hot drinks where made available in the dinning area, this was the only thing to cause some slight disappointment as the cakes where the pretty much the same each day and despite looking different where somewhat sweet and tasteless. This of course is a personal choice and others may have found them delightful.
The free cocktail bar open from 18.00 until 20.00 was marvellous with a very large selection of drinks available on a serve yourself basis, couldn't fault it.
We didn't eat in the main hotel so we can't comment on that, but access to the marina is easy where a wide selection of restaurants awaits, we found the Blue Note Bar to be particularly good.
The hotel is clean and smart with very friendly staff in all areas, always had a smile and always very helpful, the only comment would be that some areas are getting close to the point where a little investment is going to be necessary and redecoration, this is not a criticism just something that all hotels have to do, but when they don't the perceived quality will soon disappear.
The spa is ok but not the best we have come across, but free for club members and with 10% discount on massages etc we took advantage of this and found the treatments to be very good and professional.
Overall we would highly recommend the Club Volcan experience.

Room Tip: Club rooms are above the other rooms and occupied by adults only so we found them quiet at night, the area can only be accessed by club members so there aren't other guests or children wandering through.

We were really looking for a relaxing quiet holiday but this hotel was so dead we got the impression that it was getting ready to close the sun beds as everyone said were awfull we were told it was because it was an island and things took along time to be delivered no excuse the room was fine except no view room 256 we did e-mail the hotel but they said the hotel was full but they would see what could be done for a room on a high floor nothing was done it was kept clean pillow menu a laugh asked for a different pillow got the same as already on the bed the food at breakfast was good certainly better than the evening meal we did eat in the japanese restaurant with the voucher and that was really very good excellent service too we were marched to tables in the hotel restaurant like we were children not good get some more toasters !!!sorry but not 5star

Room Tip: definetly get a room on a high floor if you want a view

We had seen the Hotel Volcan on a previous stay and decided to book here as the location near the marina and some superb restaurants was very enticing. We were not disappointed. The entrance was through a chapel with religious chants and lit candles. Checking in was easy very friendly and helpful staff and came with a welcome cocktail. I had booked a sea-view room and influenced by other tripadvisor comments had emailed the hotel and asked for a quiet room with views over the marina, and this is what we got. The room was large with a sitting area that had a settee plus two chairs and a table and a terrace with two chairs and a glass table. The beds were comfortable and there was a very extensive pillow menu. The room included a minibar with two complimentary bottles of water and a safe that was also free to use (other hotels charge extra for both of these) The bathroom had two handbasins plus a bath with overhead shower, in a separate area was the toilet and bidet.
The hotel has a complex layout which we were only getting used to by the time we left but it had some lovely quiet sunbathing spots where we could get out of the prevailing and incessant wind. Disappointed at the additional cost of the spa, but it seems that most of the Lanzarote hotels have this policy. We only booked B & B as we knew we wanted to eat in the local restaurants. Breakfasts were excellent with a wide range of foods. You could even start the day with champagne if you wished, and many other guests obviously did ! We eat in on one night at a similarly extensive buffet which was a reasonable 20 euros per person and very good value.

We booked a double room with a sea view, but what we were given would have been described as a junior suite at some hotels. Spacious and very tasteful, and the view was over the Rubicon Marina across the bay to Playa Blanca.

The hotel is designed to look like a hill-side village, low clusters of white building with gardens and pools. There is even a building designed like a church, which you pass through on the way to the foyer. On arrival, we thought we were in the wrong place. Candles lit, a recording of monks chanting. We sometimes sat in this room just to soak in the peaceful atmosphere. And because this is Lanzarote, there is also a volcano: a small mountain of black basalt, which houses the foyer,.next to the 'church'.

Many hotels have lines of sunbeds squeezed round the pools, but here you can get away from everyone else. There are sunbeds by the pools, but more are scattered throughout the gardens, each pair protected by a low semi-circular wall of black basalt in the style of the walls built on farms to protect crops. By some standards the gardens are not lush. There seems to be no soil on Lanzarote, and even succulent plants struggle in crushed volcanic rubble that does not retain moisture, and the overall effect is black.

We booked bed and breakfast, which gave us the chance to eat at several of the restaurants in the marina outside the hotel. In general they were very good and (by our standards) quite expensive. We had dinner at the hotel on two occasions, the buffet (which wasn't outstanding) and the Japanese restaurant, which was.

The hillside on which the hotel is built is quite steep, and someone with restricted mobility might not find it easy to get about, but there is a level promenade walk into Playa Blanca, a couple of miles away. On the whole, the restaurants there are cheaper than those in the marina, and there is a good range of tourist shops. A word of warning for photographers: be sure you are up to date with prices. My camera broke while I was there, and I took it into a specialist camera shop (Image, C/. Limones, 72 - 35580 Playa Blanca). After several hours of confusing sales talk I came out with a new camera, memory card, spare battery, carrying case and various 'free gifts'. I now know that I paid three times what I should have paid.

Room Tip: Our room was 477. Nice room, nice view, but long corridors!
