“Amazing from the very 1st minute”
Reviewed November 19, 2012 via mobile

My wife and I are currently staying here for the week for our first holiday abroad, lets just say we feel like we made the right choice in selecting The Hotel Volcan as the place makes it feel like we're on honeymoon again. On arrival you enter what appears to be a small chapel with monks praying, well we could just spend the day in this area relaxing, obviously this is just the foyer and a sound track of monks prayer! Once passing through you enter the lobby and reception area where you are greeted by the porter who presents you with a cocktail. We were blown away by the scale of the atrium, with its volcanic rock waterfall and palm trees, photos on the website do not do this justice, it is truly amazing. The room is spacious, very well presented and they provide a good range of toiletries. We have gone for a B&B package as we wanted to try the local restaurants, but after trying the breakfast we are tempted to try out the hotels dinner buffet. The breakfasts are really nice with a vast selection. Only down side is as we are out of the main season the spa facilities are being renovated, but this does not detract from what a lovely facility this hotel is. We would highly recommend it and that the negative reviews on here are ignored and taking with a pinch of salt as we did.

Stayed at this hotel the last two weeks in October 2012 for 2 weeks. This magnificent hotel can be seen from all over Playa Blanca because of its impressive man-made volcano at the entrance. Made from volcanic rock, its sometimes lit-up in the evening to resemble lava flowing down its sides.
As you enter the monastic hallway leading to reception, music starts playing, Gregorian monks start chanting, and you are walking through a replica of the inside of the first church built in Teguise, the old capital of Lanzarote. It is even more awsome if you arrive in the evening, when its dark, all the candles are burning, and the smell of the incense is strong. Suddenly you are transported back to mediaeval times, your footsteps echoing in this massive chamber, half expecting hooded monks to appear, all these experiences in the first few seconds of arriving.
And you wonder, can the rest of the hotel be as good as this unique and stunning experience?

Firstly , the reception staff were very polite and helpful. When we arrived late in the evening, due to a delayed flight, we were delighted to find a full cold meal, complete with fruit, yoghurt and granary rolls waiting for us in our room. We also had bottles of water, tea and coffee making facilities. A good start after a tiring delay!

We liked the Pillow Menu service. A big plus for those of us who find the Spanish pillows too hard. They have six to eight different kinds, and reception very quickly supplied another two.

We requested a quiet room on a high floor with a sea view, and that's exactly what we got. Room 565 had wonderful views of the Rubicon Marina, although we didn't get the sun on the veranda until the afternoon.
Just loved the room, with a massive super king bed and plenty of wardrobe space and a FREE electronic safe. Tea and coffee making facilities are standard and included t-bags and enough coffee to tide you over for the first couple of days.

Because the layout of this hotel is built to resemble a typical Canarian village, some of the rooms are about a five or six minute walk away from the pools and the dining room. There are also steps to negociate, and this would not suit elderly or wheelchair guests.

The dining room is situated beside, and extends into the main pool, which works very well. The most popular tables are by the windows overlooking the pool. We liked the fact that you are escorted to a table of your choice, as some other hotels have you wandering around for ages looking for vacant tables.
There is a small area cordoned off for very small children where they can be kept amused with soft toys, while mum and dad can finish off breakfast, which I thought was quite thoughtful.
The choice of food is incredible, with something for everyone. You can even start breakfast off with Cava and orange. Coffee and tea is available with every meal, which is very surprising, as most hotels switch off their machines after breakfast.

The hotel offer you a choice of two a la carte restaurants, twice per week if you fancy a change from the hotel buffet. The Italian and Spanish restaurants are nearby and are excellent, with great views and beautiful sunsets over the Marina if you are lucky. There is also a Japanese restaurant in the hotel, and the hotel will give you a discount for this one.

The bar Los Jameos is where the main entertainment is four times a week, and is quite low-key.The seating is spread out over the waterfall and hanging garden area and is usually quiet.
However if the Spanish dancers etc., are not for you there is some very good bars outside in the Marina.
We can recommend the Blue Note Bar which has a jazz pianist some nights, and an excellent aging rocker belting out all the old 60's songs. With pints of Peroni at only 3.80 euros, what more can you ask for. There is also a very good cocktail bar, with comfortable seats and some good music. The Marina is a nice place to relax after dinner and can be quite busy in the evening.

If you like walking like us, Playa Blanca shops and two beautiful beaches are about 15 to 20 minutes away along the promenade. The prom goes on for miles and you can stop at the ferry terminal and catch the ferry to Fuerteventura, which is only about 20 minutes away.

Walking the other way, out through reception, will take you along the coastal prom, past the ancient Castillo (which still has its original warning bell) and goes towards Papagayo beaches. Most people drive to this area, but if you are feeling energetic it will take you a couple of hours.Half way along you will take a left into the Las Colorados shopping area, where you should stop for a coffee before going any further. A nice walk then turns into a pebbly walk, and some people hire bikes for the last part. A great walk on a dull day.

We liked the fact that Market day is Wednesday and Saturday and is situated directly in the Marina area just outside of the hotel, not far to walk to spend your euros!

Club Volcan
If you want more privacy, preferential treatment, exclusive facilities and a free 3 hour bar then consider Club Volcan. We went on a guided tour of these extra facilities and were very impressed with the private pool, great views, separate breakfast facilities and a host of other amenities. But with all these extras this comes at a cost.

To sum up, we found this hotel lived up to its five star status. The Rubicon Marina is a beautiful area with excellent restaurants and we found the bars not too expensive, with a good class of entertainment and comfy seating.

Room Tip: If you have walking difficulties or are in a wheelchair I would specify a low room with no steps nea...

My review of this hotel could have been very short and blunt, as on arrival we were informed by the hotel reception manager that our booking through the hotel's own website was not in their reservation system even though we had the booking confirmation number and details on the hotel's email. If it was left to the hotels reception 'manager' that would have been that. The hotel was full and there was nothing she could do. Obviously not happy with this hand wringing exercise and unwilling to contemplate the thought of having to find another hotel in a busy (end of the English half term holidays) Playa Blanca, we insisted on speaking to the hotel manager. I was concerned that someone less willing to stand up for themselves would have been left in an awful predicament for what was clearly an error within the hotels IT system.

I am willing to allow that such booking issues can happen and on this basis you can usually judge a hotel by how they handle what was now a complaint from an increasingly stressed and irritated couple. After waiting a while in reception for the hotel duty manager to arrive we were eventually seen by a lady called Johanna. After explaining to her the situation and providing her with the evidence of our booking, she made some enquiries. It was originally suggested that they would have to find us an alternative hotel for a couple of days until rooms became free - this would have been stressful enough and not ideal for the start of our holiday in Lanzarote. I can only presume that she understood the impact of what such a negative beginning to a holiday would have on us and that an internal mistake in their booking system should not have left us with having to be moved round from hotel to hotel due to an IT mistake of their own making. Thankfully, common sense prevailed. The only available room was their master suite and she offered it to us for the first 2 days without any additional charge and then we would move to our original double room in the Club area. Throughout what was an unfortunate and stressful situation, the manager showed great tact and understanding and she deserves a great deal of credit in redeeming the hotel's reputation in providing a duty of care to it's customers - a 5 star recovery!

We stayed within the adult only Club area and found it to be excellent and well worth our digging our heels in. The facilities were 5 star and the staff throughout (once you had left reception!!) our stay were extremely helpful and friendly. The club pool area had a dedicated heated swimming pool, Bali beds, sun loungers (always free ones available) and 2 Jacuzzi's. The rooms were very nicely decorated and spacious - we eventually stayed in a junior suite for the rest of the week, which was also a pleasant gesture by the management, but the standard doubles seemed also very nice. Free wifi in the rooms and public areas was good. We stayed bed & breakfast only, which was a good move, as the dedicated breakfast table / buffet service combined was excellent! Eggs (whichever way you requested) and bacon with coffee and fresh orange juice. Breakfast continues to 11am which was also very civilised! The evening meals would have needed to be taken in the main hotel restaurant on half board and having seen the buffet it looked okay with plenty of choice, but nothing special. The Rubicon Marina which was on the hotel doorstep (reached by a secure key access gate from the beautifully kept hotel grounds) has plenty of choice for restaurants. The Club area also provides complimentary coffee and choice of delightful cakes between 4pm & 6pm, then from 6pm - 9pm a complimentary buffet bar service is laid on with a remarkable choice of quality alcoholic beverages! Perfect way to relax before going somewhere in the Marina for dinner. Club patrons also receive a free daily newspaper - Daily Mail for the English; Die Zeit for the Germans - I think the Germans had the better cerebral option here...but i guess if you are a right wing middle Englander with a taste for reactionary clap trap, then it would be right down your semi-detached Cul-de-sac!!

The hotel (or at least in the Club area) does not do Music - hurrah!!! It even positively goes out of it's way to keep the place as chilled and laid back as possible, even to the point of discouraging the use of mobile phones in the pool area.

I have also to mention that it was my birthday whilst staying at the hotel and on returning to our room found a bottle of fizz and a birthday cake waiting with a letter from the management wishing me a happy birthday!!

I have travelled to many places and reviewed a number of hotels through TripAdvisor with varying impressions, but can honestly say this Hotel (under new management) provided a brilliant service of the highest standards and would wholeheartedly recommend it to travellers seeking a relaxed and special holiday in Lanzarote, just don't allow the first impressions of a receptionist to spoil your judgement!!

Room Tip: Stay in the Club area, extra cost but easily worth it!

This was our 6th return visit to Playa Blanca but first to the Volcan. The entrance is like entering a church with piped music, nice touch! The place itself is huge and very spread out, built like a spainish village but with lots of "nooks and crannies" to sit and relax. The room was just as large with a lovely terrace to sit and enjoy the view, the only down side was the amount of stairs you had to climb to get anywhere, not at all suitable for those with walking problems, but that said everything else was excellent, from the food to all the staff. Playa Blanca is about a good 20 minute walk away, but with plenty of places to stop and enjoy the view. One draw back was the lack of coffee/tea places in the reception areas other than the pool. The one in the main reception only opened between 4 and 9 in the evening.

Room Tip: If you have walking problems avoid rooms starting with 5!

We stayed in the hotel for the third time this year and decided to upgrade to the Club Volcan rooms and it was well worth it. The pool area overlooks the sea and is so tranquil with comfy Balinese beds. Afternoon tea and cakes are served from 4-6 then pre-dinner drinks from 6-9 all complimentary and this was great, you get the feeling that you are in a small community and we got to meet many lovely people whilst having drinks. It's just a pity you are not able to eat dinner in the dining room where breakfast is served as the atmosphere in the main restaurant is completely different, going from an adult only area to eat dinner in a restaurant that has a childrens play area in the corner. In my opinion the main restaurant and food served there does not equate to 5* quality. It is the only thing that lets the upgrade down. All in all a lovely stay, we did laugh this morning though when two of the owners were obviously having breakfast, the staff (numbers tripled) were completely different, showing you to your table (doesn't normally happen) drinks poured as soon as you sat down and generally tripping over themselves to oblige and as soon as the owners left it all changed back to a very laid back service. How funny. Would definitely stay in the Club rooms again.

Just returned from a super holiday at the Hotel Volcan, Playa Blanca, Lanzarote.
A large, mostlly luxurious complex with plenty of space, 5 pools, and indoor relaxing areas. Although full during our time there, we always able to find pool side recliners nor wait to be tended to. Low Key non intrusive entertainment in bar area most evenings
Staff were all helpful, polite and friendly. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and our room was luxurious with most extras to be expected in a 5 star estabishment. Good location near to the Marina with shops and bars. Shortish walk along a paved and well lit boulevard takes you to the excellent clean beach and the main part of Playa Blanca.
Sadly, all let down somewhat by the poor quality food. Although an adequate well presented buffet, meals were frequently cold and overprepared, bland and tasteless with little day to day variation. Definitely NOT 5 star!!. Thomas Cook offer their clients 2 dinners per stay in a small choice of restaurants in the Marina as an alternative, but choice is limited to cost. I do not call Pizza and icecream 5 star dining!!

Room Tip: Ask for a Sea View on the 5th or 6 th levels. "Club Voltan" rooms are best and include oth...

So much gets said on here about 5* rating- lets get this straight the rating system in Spain, and for that matter anywhere else is different from the UK.
Being in the tourist trade for over 42 years I spend an average of 220 days a year in Hotels-and know a little about hotels work- but remember at the end of the day a hotel is only bricks and mortar-what really makes a hotel is- the people that run it- I also fully understand for most people staying in a hotel can be a special event and time (I very rarely PAY to stay in a Hotel- its my job)
Now the review- When you walk in to this Hotel from the road- its a little shock really but a nice one- through a Church !....and then into the middle of a Volcano !...a wonderful welcome by the staff at reception called me by my name- and instantly knew I had emailed with a little request and this was done- I was also handed a welcome (very) refreshing drink, and so to the room- very nice-lots of room, well thought out airy and bright- and spotless.
Breakfast - one of the finest breakfasts spreads I have ever seen -I spotted Caviar and bottles of Champagne (well the Spanish version) a wonderful array of foods to suit all tastes and the food hygiene was first class with all member of staff handling foods had funny little(but very effective) clear plastic masks on, superb all round.

The staff to man and woman where fantastic - well done to the hotel for training your staff to this level- everyone from the pool attendants- the porters and reception top class.

Enough has been said about the location- it is a super -if you want lots of pubs close to the hotel- go somewhere else, mostly resteraunts but a 15 minute walk will take you to a local shopping complex with lots of the usual Irish- English bars.

I went for a rest- not a typical tourist I know- but take it from me- its a great hotel.

Only 1 single negative comment -thats why I have marked up the rooms with only 4 out of 5- take note management ! this is 2012 - your TV's come from another time- like the 80's ! and add a DVD player- they cost very very little these days-ithis was the only disappointment - the rest is fantastic.
Enjoy your stay.

Room Tip: Some of the rooms are a long way from reception - but that suited me for the peace and quite.
