“Relaxing but not perfection”
Reviewed April 12, 2012

I did enjoy my stay in windy Lanzarote. The hotel is good for relaxing round the pools.
But I'm finding it hard to pinpoint exactly how I felt about the Volcan. I have to agree with other reviews I've read - I don't feel it is 5*. In my opinion, a 5* hotel is not somewhere that just looks nice. In short, it is rather soulless. There are various tourist awards in a cabinet near the reception area but I noticed they were awarded quite a while ago (around 2004, approx). This makes me think that the hotel was, at that time, an innovative build (sorry to sound like Kevin McCloud). However in terms of customer service, it has not evolved since then. The Volcan does have a wonderful location, an unusual layout with Chapel-like, music filled entrance hall (where bags were collected from the car and whisked straight to our room very efficiently). But after that, it felt like we were on our own (apart from breakfast). The hotel was pretty quiet for the first 2 days of our stay after which it filled up due to Easter weekend. Yet still, the pool-side bar closed at 5pm and we felt that the management had missed the opportunity to have a central focus where guests could meet up before dinner. I liked the location in the Marina area and the unusual layout of hotel buildings (from the Marina - it looks like a mini whitewashed village). Breakfast was plentiful with good variety but coffee was not hot as it had been made in advance and left in jugs until guests arrived at the tables. There was a timetable of low key events each day like Zumba and a stretching class. My husband had a very good back massage in the spa. Yes, I liked it but I cant say wow.

It's a great place to arrive at after a days travel from the uk. Impressively designed little complex. Some unusual secluded areas to sit. There isn't much to do in this area....so if like us you want a complete rest, but with access to wifi and decent food, this is a good place to be. It's nice. It's different. But it's not out of this world amazing! Like others have said....it's not five star but it's 'nice'.

Booked this hotel the day before travel through Hotels4U all confirmed in minutes. The entrance to this old Monestry is very impressive and those looking for something different than a typical block hotel will be very pleased. We booked a Club B&B room arrived at 1.30pm and room was ready, speedy check in and very friendly with a nice refreshing drink. Room was spacious, clean and had character, overlooking the Club pool and the Rubicon Marina, as well as Futerventura. We did have to remind them of free mineral water in the room on arrival, but this was then delivered with some truffles as an appology.
I can see why there are some mixed reviews for this hotel 4* or 5*? 5* if you go club as this is like a seperate boutique hotel, very quiet and no children allowed, free entry to the Spa, private Breakfast, afternoon tea & Cakes, and evening drinks & canopes from 6pm to 9pm, saves a fortune, although there were not many people in the Club lounge so not much atmosphere, although they allow you to take drinks back to your room or outside.
The main hotel is very beautiful, well kept grounds and plenty of sun bathing areas if not on Club. There are some comments about the pools, but they are generally very good, the only pool that has some paint missing is very near to where the resteraunt is built into the pool itself so not really a swim area anyway! The hotel prices are extremley reasonable similar to those in the Rubicon Marina, however Playa Blanca a good 10 minute Taxi ride away (5E) is much more expensive to eat and drink. I would recommend this hotel for families wanting to be away from the main hype, or couples that want a little more sophistication Club room, people dressed up here in the evenings.

Room Tip: Only Stretch to a club room if you want the extras, privacy and a seaview, if not all the rooms look...

We stayed at this hotel after viewing from a distance last year and were drawn by the 5 star rating and location.

This Hotel was confusing overall it was reasonably good we were looked after and the majority of the staff (with the exception of the pool bar) did give good service and strived to give a 5 star impression. On arrival all was very good with a good explanation on what was on offer, we were taken to our room which was of good quality and an excellent location (162).

the positive points of this hotel were its location in the marina, the hotel room, the breakfast (reasonable) and the majority of the staff. the negatives in my view would pull the hotel rating down to at most a four star.

as in previous reviews the pool was most uninviting with paint flaking and general grounds upkeep poor - 3 star, the sunbeds and brollies - sorry but the same. the pool bar was up stairs and not really accessible. The restaurant poor with th the placing of food confusing, butter away from the bread, milk 15m from the cereals etc etc, staff ther were great and pleasant, somebody just needs to take a step back and organise it better !!!

The hotel had no vibe or soul it was lifeless just a place to stay, its location was great and as a bolt hole for a week in the sun was ok but do not book this if you want a 5 star experience.

i really appreciated the nice touch on my birthday a bottle of wine and cake , a 5 star touch

Sorry but an honest review

Room Tip: 162 and surrounding were good access if you are ok with the pool bar access

Just back from this hotel and we did actually really enjoy our stay with the Volcan. That said, this is ONLY because we chose to pay extra for going in the Club Voncal Adult Only area and if we hadnt we'd have been massively dissapointed.

The Adult area is about 5 star by our rating. The room was fine to us though a little dated and tired but no big deal... thing is DONT stay in room 557 as we did as there are massive trees growing outside and you cannot see past the balcony at all... though in the same respect it does offer complete privacy !

Breakfast was great and in a private area dining room apart from the main hotel in the locked away adult area. The food is good at breakfast and the staff were all totally lovely. We didnt stay for lunch and dinner so cannot comment though know the rest of the days meals are served out of the adult area with everyone else in the main hotel.

WIFI was a critical thing for us as we both run businesses and I have to say it was tiresome as every time you closed a program down it would log you off within seconds. Why on earth it wont let you save the password I dont know but it really was annoying this bit. The wifi was available in our room and poolside and was ok on speed to get by on but annoying with being ditched as I say.

Also for us one important thing was to have a gym. We wanted to keep fit and the gym was very poor by even the oldest standards. The bikes kept dropping seat hight, the free weights are all worn and rusty, the running machine is disgusting with rust from sweat and all the other kit was just plane old and dated. This was a big let down to be honest as 5 star hotels weve been to in the past have had state of the art gyms.

The rest of the hotel out of the adult area was very run down and dated.... we just had to walk through it to see the pool was worn out on its floor and needed painting desperately, and the sun beds in the public areas were disgusting too... all plastic and old and cheap and the foam covers worn out and brown with age and use... yuk !

The adult area was fine... I would rate the aduly area and our overall stay at 4 star really so dont expect proper 5 star standards here at all. The rest of the hotel... basically dont bother to stay if you cant afford the adult part or have kids.

We wont be going back.... mainly as the island was windy and cold... its known to be windy but until you go there and experience it, you dont realise just how chilly. A nice rest but the world has much better to offer even in March.

THE hotel complex itself is very impressive; a monastery hall at the front complete with Gregorian chants (One half expected to see Sean Connery shuffle through in monks' garb), and a cavernous interior, now showing some signs of needing refurbishment.Reception is effective and comprehensive, but back up at busy times is poor. The downstairs shop has what must be the happiest manageress in Spain.
The pool area is most attractive, easily one of the most impressive I've seen, but the pool lining has come off in places, making it look neglected, and some loungers are broken, with thin, very dirty matresses.
We were given room 107 which looked like a plush Sheik of Araby's boudoir. The tv had about 35 channels, but only BBC world sevice and occasionally Sky news. The bathroom had no ventilation system or window, and felt permanently humid. The patio felt a bit overgrown, and the bamboo furniture too old and dirty to use. Tea and coffee facilities were not renewed. Five star?
The dining room was lovely, with soft lighting. Breakfasts on the whole very good, but the hot meats containers were all grouped in front of the omelette station, making access difficult. Somebody mentioned in a review a bird pecking the bread, which management undertook to remedy. It is still doing it, with managers a couple of feet away! I chased one away three times. They didn't appear to be bothered.
Evening meals are also good, with a very comprehensive salad selection. A cynic would point out that the only protein most nights, apart from eggs and cheese, was tinned tuna and sardines. One can order meat or fish to be freshly cooked, though portions are very small. Still, you can do an Oliver Twist.
The Marina area is very attractive, though the bars are more pricy than in town, and some give consistently marginal short measure on draught lager. One in particular, which is probably why it's also the least attended. A particularly good bar is the Vino Blanco, next to the Lady Russ shop, especially their draught Estrella lager.
We enjoyed our week at the Volcan, but one wonders if there's enough in the area if the weather is consistently bad.I also don't think that the holiday is very good value for money. No way is this a genuine 5 star, although it could probably retain a 4 star rating with a little bit to spare.

Room Tip: Go for a room on a high floor.

The Hotel Volcan is set by the Marina about 15 mins walk from Playa Blanca, 3-4 mins by car. This is where the good restaurants were (in our view). We were very kindly upgraded on arrival (thanks Hotel Volcan) and the staff were excellent at check-in, very detailed with the information they provided about the facilities and always very helpful. We went B/B - breakfast was very good and offered an excellent choice in the restaurant overlooking the pool. There was a cool wind whilst we were there so we didn't use the pools. The largest pool at the bottom needs some care as the paint had peeled off from the bottom and the water was very cold in this one. It lacks an indoor pool for when the climate is a little cooler and there is no beach without a decent walk so probably a little more suited to adults than children. The restaurants at the marina were of good quality and not overpriced although be aware of the specials which they don't tell you the prices for! Lovely little market on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Marina - well worth a visit.
Overall, we liked the hotel, which was quiet and we wished the weather had been a bit warmer as we might have enjoyed it a bit more, but we relaxed and took the car to see the volcanoes which was very easy from our location.
