“Some charming touches - but dinner menu was lacking focus”
Reviewed November 30, 2011

Good points - We had a room in the Club section, and enjoyed the special breakfast service, free afternoon tea and free evening drinks. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the location is good. Areas of the hotel were candle-lit in the evenings and were very pretty/atmospheric.

Not-so-good points. The Club pool area was lovely BUT the decking was dangerous - there were lots of gaps and uneven planks. One board cracked beneath my (normal-sized) husband's feet and disappeared into the depths of gloom below - we walked gingerly after that! The hotel is very spread-out with lots of slopes and steps (and no short-cuts). This caused some difficulties as I was recovering from a foot problem but would be quite awkward for those with limited mobility, I think. Also, there was quite a lot of noise-carry between rooms.

Specific mention for the food, though - we were half-board. There was a lot of food, but the choice was poor. The desserts had very little variation; the main course selection tended to be a large number of dishes that didn't really go together. As a result, it was hard to assemble a straightforward "meal", other than via repetition of certain basic dishes which appeared almost every night. The alternative was an ecclectic plate of bits. It was as though the chef had picked a collection of recipes, rather than trying to put together menu dishes.

I wouldn't rush back, but I wouldn't say no to a return either.

We stayed at the hotel at the beginning of November. I had read many reviews on this Hotel and was filled with trepidation about visiting, however, I need not have worried it was wonderful. The room was larger than I expected with bedroom, sitting area and lovely balcony with a delightful view of the boats in the harbour. The sun bathing areas where varied and quiet. The food was buffet style, both for breakfast and dinner and there was a variety of food. One or two evenings the hot food could have been hotter. The atmosphere in the hotel was one of quietness which was exactly what we wanted.

Room Tip: Try to ask for a 1st floor room for a view over the bay.

Stayed here for the last but one week in November. Having read oh so many great reviews thought we would treat ourselves to 5 star luxury.
The evening meal was always very poor. The food was mostly just warm and the cuts of meat rather poor in quality. It reminded me of movie “Ground Hog Day” as menu was a re-run of the day before with minor variations. But always just warm. Bland and tasteless desserts where the same. No cheese and biscuits. The cheese they do serve up is cheap and factory processed.
They have one poor fella whose job it is to try and cook something hot and fresh as you stand in a line waiting. On one night well after the rush had gone from the restaurant the Chef cooked my wife and I pork Kebabs. Tucking it tasted quite strange. This on account the innards were still pink. Reported it to management but never heard a word back from them. Gave up eating here at went to the town for dinner.
The bar area is mostly very quiet with little if any atmosphere. They achieve this by overcharging for drinks. A G&T and Vodka and Orange came out at € 15. Guaranteed method for emptying the bar. Entertainment was best suited for an old people’s home. Dreadful.
So you finally get back to your room, which to be fair is very nice and switch on the TV. You are treated to 3 stations. BBC World News, Sky News and Discovery. I don’t really want to know about some African having a water tap put into his village or rolling news that repeats every 15 minutes or watch endless adverts on Discovery. They seem to serve up 7 or so German channels with movies and the like. And at no extra cost.
In conclusion. It is a very nice hotel, rooms are great and clean. Architecture is pleasing. Pools whilst needing a repaint are fine.
I can only think the shareholder sitting in their mansions in Madrid are braking open the Champagne on account of the profits they are taking of us tourists. A bit more money spent on the quality of the food and facilities to keep it hot would go a long way in making this a great hotel. And not forgetting the price of drinks.

This is a well endowed hotel, Good rooms but be careful that you get one with a proper patio and view for sitting out.You could be looking at a lava brick wall.
Lots of pluses,eg room size, parking, breakfast, free internet and safety box, few children, nice staff..
Negatives are no entertainment, no decent bar for a tete a tete drink except hotel foyer or night club. Good 20-30 mins walk to old town for evening.

Also thin walls, voices carry so whisper.

Pools are good.

I 've just spent a couple of days in beautiful Volcan Lanzarote and I am looking forward to come back. The hotel is great..everything was perfect: beautiful location ,great food , relaxing and elegant atmosphere..I was in a Club room and it has been the perfect choice since it's in an adult only area, with an exclusive pool area, restaurant.
Service is very good and I think this is definetely the best option on the island

I can't help noticing that the better reviews tend to come from guests who have stayed Club Volcan and therein lies the problem if you are expecting a truly 5* hotel.

POSITIVES:-

Location - this has to be the best location in Playa Blanca (unless you are mad for the beach). The beautiful Marina, nice shops, great bars and restaurants, gentle live music are all on your doorstep. There is also a Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

The staff were lovely as were the people who come here (we met some really nice people!)

Breakfast is excellent.

Our room was large with everything we needed, such as safe, fridge, kettle, TV, robes and slippers. The decor is not elegant as such, but relaxing.

Evening entertainment, when on, was of a really good standard.

NOT SO GOOD:-

Previous reviewers have already mentioned the main pool and indeed it does look scruffy. Even if you turn a blind eye to that, the loungers could do with replacing, some are broken. The mattresses are thin and looking past their best. There is also no drink/snacks service by the pool - the turret would make a fabulous bar and the revenue would pay for new loungers!

Evening meal - a bit hit and miss. The set up was also a bit hotchpotch, the starters in different areas, the cheese and biscuits nowhere near the desserts, no notice on the Gazpacho so abandoned soup bowls every night and infra red heat lamps over the food which made it look a strange colour. The saving grace was that there was chef to cook fresh meats/fish every night so there was always a fallback.Wines available in the restaurant were great and very reasonable.

The evening entertainment (including a flamenco we were looking forward to) was cancelled TWICE due to a corporate event.

Our room was cold all week, despite cranking up the thermostat.

FINALLY

You will have a wonderful holiday. I do feel the hotel needs tweaking in certain areas to really hit the spot. I think you will be onto a winner if you manage to upgrade to Club Volcan. I suspect the Princess Yaiza is in a different league if you really do need to have luxury, but this hotel will do the job for most people.

Room Tip: Go for seaview that takes in the sunshine

This was supposed to be a 40th wedding celebration for my husband and myself. After arriving at reception, which is a nice area, everything went downhill. The room we were given was facing a wall directly next to a public footpath and had a big tree in front of the terrace making it extremely dark all day. We were told that there were no spare rooms but later found out that this was not the case. The bathroom was grubby with the sealant around the bath dirty with mold and the bathroom floor tiles dirty. Our terrace was also dirty and had to be cleaned daily with insecticide to eliminate the ants. It was a marathon to the restaurant with 67 steps to climb down and then 67 back. Food for breakfast was good, however evenings could be better. We ate out for almost half of our 2 week break. The worst part of the hotel is the pool area. The paint on the bottom of the pool is a disgrace and is probably a health hazard and the sun loungers are absolutely filthy, again a health hazard. We wanted to have alazy holiday beside the pool and never once used this area. Instead we had breakfast and left the hotel immediately until evening. There are no areas to relax in the hotel, as you would expect in a 5 star hotel and the outside furniture is also a disgrace. No pool service, and tables being left with dirty glasses etc. The only part of this hotel which is 5 star is Club Volcan and the hotel has been given the 5 stars based on this part of the hotel. The rest of the hotel is barely 3 stars. The Marina is lovely and was the only respite of this holiday. I feel that we have been totally misled into buying this holiday and do not want anybody else to do the same. I cannot for the life of me understand how people can think that the pool areas are beautiful, they are a disgrace. How anybody can even lie on any of these beds is beyond me.
However, the sun shone for almost the 2 weeks, the staff are lovely, our chambermaid kept our room as clean as she possibly could given the age and maintenance of the room and my husband and I are still married despite having the worst hotel experience of our lives.

Room Tip: Do not stay at this hotel unless you are prepared to pay the extra for Club Volcan.
