Just arrived back from the Gran Castillo. I will start with the negatives as I feel there are definitely more positives.

Negatives:
* terrible lack of staff in bars, restaurants and mini club. 1 person serving at peak time is not acceptable in the bar. Seems that is there way of not letting people drink much!!
* Security in mini club not tight enough. No signing in/out system. Probably due to lack of staff again!
* cockroach seen on 3 out of 7 nights in main bar area where mini disco was held.(although I must say it was clean and children found it highly entertaining!)
*main dining restaurant had 2 sittings. 7pm and 9pm. Struggled to get a table at 7 o'clock sitting, which with 3 children is essential.
* not enough sun loungers!
*only outside entertainment was owl show and reptile show. Both of which didn't allow you to take photos, but would allow a photo with then for €10. Obviously hotel didn't have to pay for this type of entertainment..another cost cutter.

Positives

* fantastic rooms which were immaculate. Large beds and a lounge which doubled as a bedroom for the children. Great bathroom and seperate luxury shower. Lots of bathroom freebies which you expect with 5*.
* Mini disco was excellent and the staff brilliant. ( big thanks to Alex and Raquel who were so genuine and hardworking. Our girls loved them. 8pm start would be bettter though. Our 4 yr old was shattered by the time it started at 8.45pm.
* staff were all friendly and helpful, and nothing too much trouble
* Italian restaurant was definitely the best dining option. We went there 5 out of the 7 nights. Pizzas were fantastic, and unexpected for an all inclusive hotel.
* breakfasts great with omelettes and crêpes made to order, and freshly ground coffee another bonus.
* activities and amenities for all ages are excellent. Lost count of how many pools. Big ones, small ones, deep, shallow, water slides. It has them all. All lovely and clean too.
* grounds and gardens are all immaculate. Main area in reception is beautiful and always smelled lovely.
*glass of cava and orange juice in arrival was great.
*12 o'clock check out as standard was again great, as most hotels tend to be 10.
* bell boys to take you anywhere on the complex in golf buggies. Including taking and collecting luggage from rooms. Nothing was too much trouble.
* branded drinks in all bars restaurants with bottled beer in restaurant on evenings which went down well with my husband.
*fresh fruit always available which was great, as we have an 8 month old who hasn't discovered junk food yet! Puréed baby food was also available if requested.
* nice location especially if you manage a sea view room. Beach at front is awful, and not worth trying, but a brisk walk and you are at the gorgeous papagayo beach.

All in all I would definitely return. Good value for money. People who were moaning in the hotel I would suggest that they remember how much they have paid and challenge them to find some winter sun of that standard for less money!! We have travelled to almost every winter sun location in the world.( Caribbean, Asia Thailand, Australia etc and can assure you you will not!!)

I hope the management will read this and take the constructive criticism. They have a gem if they fine tune the weaknesses. We will return!!

We arrived on the 25th October and have just enjoyed the most wonderful holiday. This was our 3rd time at the hotel. We were upgraded to a superior suite with a sea view a bottle of cava, dressing gowns and slippers. The food was lovely with lots of variety. I would just like to mention the amazing animation team especially Alejandro and Márcio!! Alejandro runs the mini club and works so hard, he adores all the children. He does the mini disco in the evening I really don't know where he gets his energy from but he is a an absolute credit to the animation team. Secondly Márcio what a lovely guy he entertains all the adults throughout the day. My children had an absolute ball with both Alejandro and Márcio.... Just hope they are both there next year!! I would definitely recommend this hotel!!

Loved our rooms - huge and very clean, massive bathroom and separate dressing room, plus sitting area and balcony.
Went all inclusive and food was plentiful and varied.
It's a big resort and a times there were insufficient sun beds for all the guests (despite there being terrace space for more). Also the drinks service was erratic and slow in the evenings and staff seemed overworked and poorly organised.
Enjoyed our stay but would rate this hotel 4* not 5* - they could easily improve things with a bit of organisation and a few more staff.

We stayed at the Dream Gran Castillo Lanzarote with 2 other groups of family friends.
Total 6 adults and 4 children we stayed for 10 days at this 5 star hotel (Really 4 star) for the 10 of us there wasn't a complaint.
There was a surprise at the bar as well when on all inclusive the drinks were branded (Smirnoff, Bacardi etc). The entertainment was geared for the kids which gave us adults plenty of peace to enjoy ourselves whilst sitting alfresco. The hotel was about a 20 minute cliff top walk which was fully paved to the Harbour and 35 Minutes to the main resort and beach.
The food was brilliant including the show cooking which was done by the talented chefs to order and to your taste. We must have had a good deal as we have tried to go back but the price was about £1000 dearer for a 10 day holiday per family at the same time next year. One other thing the rooms have bathrooms bigger than some studios I have stayed In when in Greece and the beds are the most comfortable I have slept in and about 7 foot wide.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good but If you can get one in the castle or overlooking the pools and poolside ba...

My wife and I have recently spent two weeks at this hotel all inc. and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The hotel itself sprawls over quite a large area and is very clean and well appointed. Takes a little bit of time to check in but once past reception we were speedily on our way courtesy of a little “golf buggy”. It stands in its own grounds but “civilisation”, in the shape of a village with a good marina, is only a 10 minute walk along a promenade by the sea. A further 15 minutes and you are in Playa Blanca, a larger town with all the amenities. Buses from the bus station here go to the rest of the Island.
The room was spotlessly clean and very spacious. As it consisted of bedroom, lounge and large balcony we had room to move around, and then some, without being on top of one another.
There are several pools so lying by the pool wasn’t same old, same old. It could be a bit noisy sometimes but the hotel was full and lots of children so no more than you would expect. Need to invest in some more sun beds though. It was the dawn patrol with the towel.
The main restaurant served a large variety of meals with something to suit all tastes. The quality of the food was excellent. There are two speciality restaurants, Chinese and Italian which were equally as good and provided a different atmosphere. I overheard a comment that the Chinese wasn’t the same as back home. No it wasn’t, but Chinese is different everywhere you go. It wasn’t unpleasant just a little different taste. If you want fish ’n’ chips go to Blackpool !!
The bars served proper brands of spirits not local stuff so quality was fine as was the quantity, enough said. All the barmen were very friendly and efficient however queues right outside the door of what is billed as five star was unacceptable. In fairness they did try to fix it but didn’t really work too well. Full hotel surely means more waiting staff. Making coffee seemed to take up a lot of the barman’s time in comparison to pouring drinks. Perhaps a self service coffee machine may be worth considering. I’m not sure but the situation certainly needs attention.
All of the staff, waiters, cleaners etc need a mention as they were always very helpful and cheerful despite working long hours.
Entertainment; I have deliberately left this to the last in order to end on a high. The hotel is fine. All amenities etc. are fine but what gives this hotel the edge, and brought us back for a third time, is the entertainment. It is provided mainly by the Animation Team with acts brought in on occasion. They are on the go all day with activities for adults and the kids then they put on a different show each night. Before the main show in the evening they have a mini disco for the kids orchestrated by some of the Team. If you decide on this hotel make a point of seeing this with or without kids. OK, I have a sense of humour which I keep handy but I defy anyone to watch this and not laugh from start to finish. Great with the kids and what energy. I won’t report on the main shows as it would simply spoil the experience for you. It’s no Broadway nor the London Palladium just keep an open mind and you will be there, front row, every night. Well done to Daniel, Naomi, Raquel and the rest of the Team. Whatever they are paying you it’s not enough.
In summary, a very pleasant hotel, nice area, cheerful staff and well appointed. Five star ?? Maybe not but well worth a visit and I recommend it to anyone. Would go back again if it provided the same entertainers.

Room Tip: Superior /sea view

Need to start by saying there is no way in a million years this is 5 star more at the lower end of 4 star.
Positive points staff are all extremely friendly and helpful and the quality of food is varied and cooked fresh when required. Checking in process was good as was service with cases to room.
Negative points tables aren't properly set after the first "shift" has been in and im not talking just the odd fork napkins glasses etc you would ask a waiter for additional drinks and never see them again. I havent sat at a complete table yet, the wine is of a very poor standard and was hardly drinkable, none of the salt and pepper shakers work, and the restaurant is actually quite dirty in places this is far from a 5 star experience.
The evening entertainment was of a poor quality and having to queue for 30 mins to get a drink on an evening is a farce as mentioned before on this review site this is obviously some kind of attempt to limit how much the hotel serves I've stayed at the Lanzarote princess (not 5 star) before, waiter service no problem giving you drinks, must say puts this hotel to shame on that front. I'm not a big drinker who abuses the all inclusive but having to stand in a queue for 30 mins for couple of g&t's is rubbish if that was any other bar you would walk out.
Extremely cramped around the pools not enough beds and even less room.
Won't be returning as experience wasn't good enough.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Like a grand castle which majestically dominates the seascape of the AtlanticOcean and its islands, the magnificent GRAN CASTILLO TAGORO is erected in the charming area of Playa Blanca, in the south of the volcanic isle par excellence: Lanzarote. With the conviction that elegance and comfort should come naturally, this Hotel is a tribute to 16th century Canary history and colonial architecture, inspired by the "Castle of San José" and the typical landscape of the island, blending in with the environment. The building is divided into different zones which maintain their colonial style, where the white facades and volcanic stone contrast with the backdrop of the deep blue ocean. A charming interior courtyard of Arab inspiration bathes the reception area with light, and the contemporary décor and pale colours create a warm and very elegant atmosphere. GRAN CASTILLO TAGORO pampers every detail of the rooms and suites, which have breathtaking views of the sea and surrounding scenery. They are decorated in a contemporary style, with marine touches, light-coloured wood and pale colours, creating a pleasant atmosphere full of light. The discerning selection of restaurants and cuisines serve Canary, national and international specialities. There are conference rooms featuring spearhead technology, and various outdoor zones for events of different kinds. The "Vitanova SPA" thalassotherapy centre provides the benefits of thermal seawater, and specific treatments for the body and soul. The Hotel features a wide range of facilities and services. ... more   less
