“Great Service”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2013

We had a great meal wit similar service, only the Creme Brûlée was a bit too Brûlée. This a very nice, very Portugese part of the town, well worth the visit.

“Authentic fish restaurant”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 11, 2013 via mobile

I had the opportunity to be guided by my Porto resident colleagues to that restaurant.
I have to say that the fish selection taken as well the side dishes were excellent. The port wine served later was also brilliant and the service was great as well.
When coming back to Porto I will visit them again.
The restaurant is authentic and personal. I felt very welcome there.
Enjoy the sardines they are perfect.

“The whole fish and nothing but the fish...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2012

This place was recommended by some Porto residents as being authentic and very reasonable. Both were true. Matosinhos doesn't have the olde worlde charm of, say, the Ribiero district of Porto, but if you are after fish you could not do better. Bass, bream, hake, turbot, all on offer. Our couvert of tiny crispy sardines, jabugo-type ham and a green pepper dish was followed by some magnificent turbot - a huge helping which slightly defeated us - accompanied by potatoes and cabbage smothered in garlic and olive oil. A bottle of Post Scriptum wine was excellent. And for pud we tried the "creme brulee" which was like no other we've ever tasted, it was served hot, crunchy with sugar and cinnamon, and a real wow. Wish I'd asked for the recipe. Service was swift and helpful. They were not very busy, and the outside seating area had the plastic blinds down because of the position by the side of the road, so it ain't particularly pretty, though the inside looked attractive, being from the UK we take every possible chance to sit outside! It was dark when we arrived, but there seemed to be a whole line of this type of restaurant, some with outside barbecues going, but this one comes highly recommended.

“Lovely fish restaurant with lots of competition”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 26, 2012 via mobile

We had been told by friends that Rua Herois França was the place to go for fish, and they were not wrong! We initially went down the street on an open top bus and decided that we needed to return later.
Walking along the street, we were spoilt for choice, but chose O Xarroco because of its outward appearance and visibility of the kitchen inside.
Our waiter guided us through the menu, and we decided to go for something that we had not tried before. ("When in Rome....") We allowed the chef to advise on accompaniments to our main course, and were not disappointed. Grilled sardines with a selection of roasted peppers/chillies and a salad preceded our chosen fish dish which was skilfully deboned at the table by our waiter, and served with beautifully presented vegetables. The recommended dessert was a perfect choice, as was the bottle of local wine with (complimentary) glasses of port to accompany. With coffee and water we thought that the €65 bill was a bargain.
Sadly, we were only in Porto for a few days so were not able to come back to experience the street side barbecue that runs ap lunchtime, but O Xarroco will be on our list for a future visit.
