My wife and I stopped off for lunch at this restaurant before walking part of the 'Levada Nova' which runs through Prazeres. The service was friendly and welcoming. We ordered the fish stew with rice, which was both fulsome and flavoursome, and the sirloin steak topped with cheese, ham and egg. This was plentiful, and the meat was tender and succulent. There are a few small tables perched on the pavement outside the restaurant, with cars sweeping by around the confusing one way system. As such, there isn't much of a view. However, it was a pleasant meal with convivial service - certainly worth dropping in if you are nearby. We considered it to be very acceptable in terms of value for money.

An unprepossessing looking place near the church in Prazeres. Although it's right on the road, dining outside to enjoy the sunshine is very pleasant. Their steaks and the beef skewers are great as is the passion fruit mousse. Staff speak good English and service is reasonably quick.

Looking for an evening meal I looked on TripAdvisor and found Chico, s . We found it with difficulty, it is down a little one way street opposite the church, if we had not read the review we may not have stopped. Believe me this little restaurant is beyond excellent, the quality, decor, cleanliness and food was absolutely fantastic. By far the best meal we have had on our holiday in maderia, and the price, two courses, half bottle of quality wine and a beer, just €30. Satisfied? You bet I am, I wish every were was this good.

If we had known how generous the portions were we would not have ordered starters. These were also more than enough for one, two could have shared. For mains we chose the Espetada one beef and one pork, vegetables and fried potatoes. Garlic bead and butter came quickly. Everything we ordered was well cooked. The waitress was knowledgeable about the wine and made good suggestion, which proved to be a winner. Big portions, excellent value, very nicely done small restaurant.

We ate here twice whilst staying locally.

The food was excellent quality and the portions were very large. The Espetada we had was beautifully cooked and one between two was more than sufficient for us. We thught it offered very good value for money.

The waitress didn't speak very much English which made conversation more difficult as my Portuguese was very poor. Unfortunately made it feel less friendly/welcoming that elsewhere.

My only other criticism was that the restaurant felt quite chilly - visited early March - due to the front door being left open.

If you are visiting you should be aware that it is is a small one-way system and so seemed more complicated to find than it really is!
