“70s hotel in Portugal's Benidorm”
Reviewed June 17, 2010

This was our first (and most likely last) trip to Portugal and in all honesty I wasn't impressed in the slightest. Praia da Rocha was, in my opinion, Portugal's Benidorm.
Lots of high rise buildings, graffiti all over the place, abandoned/derelict buildings, and lots of shops shut down, etc.

Our apartment/hotel didn’t really help with our opinion either.

The positives were:
Good Location: A 5 min walk (if that) to the beach and main strip.
Spacious rooms (although in dire need of refurbishment).
A large pool area.
Friendly staff

Negatives:
Club Arcos is situated on a main road and appears only to have single glazed windows hence getting and staying asleep is quite a task.
Apartments are very dated and basic and in need of refurbishment.
No hot water: The water was only lukewarm and you could not shower one after each other.
Very weak shower.
The beds and settee mattresses were both too small for the frame.
The beds creaked terribly to the extent that it constantly woke me and my partner.
Quite a few light fittings and electrical plugs either didn’t work or were very loose/cracked.
Poor kitchen: There were only 4 hobs, 2 pots and a handful of cutlery. No kettle, grill, toaster, microwave etc.
Also the hotel descriptions state there's an on site restaurant, supermarket, indoor swimming pool, gym, steam room, massage rooms, but we saw none of these on our stay.

I'd advise staying away from Praia da Rocha and going to somewhere like Portimao or Lagoa instead as they both seem cleaner, more scenic resorts. I can't comment on Albufeira as we didn't visit here, but we won't not recommend Praia da Rocha or the Club Arcos at all.

We booked a week with Asda travel, who were very good. We flew with Monarch from Luton. Because of the ash virtually all other flights were cancelled. We had to do a 800 mile detour!
The self catering apartment was quite spacious for 2 people. But don't expect to cook too much. No oven or grill. Solid electric hobs. Porridge, fried or boiled meals, spaghetti - OK. Cheap to eat out. Best supermarket near bus terminal in Portimao,- Pingo Doce.
There is a small one on the front near the hotel,.
The place is rather old fashioned, but our rooms were clean and comfortable.
The location is excellent. Bus stop outside the door virtually. 5 mins walk to the beach and east end of the promenade. There were plenty of bars and restaurants selling a "Caneca" of beer (lager) = 3/4 pint or a glass of reasonable wine for 1 euro
Lots of restaurants doing excellent 3 course meals for 7euros. Humbertos was our favourite. go to Portimao on the bus and take trips to Alvor, Lagos and Silves. We were lucky with the weather. A nice cheap break.

We stayed here in April for 10 days and were pleasantly surprised after having read some of the reviews before we travelled. Yes the building is quite old and dated but who goes to the algarve to stay inside their hotel? If you want to stay around a modern style upmarket hotel all day then book a 4 or 5 star but for the price we believe these apts are good value for money and in an excellent location. We found the staff on the reception desk very helpful and friendly, trying their best to make your stay as pleasant as possible. Our room was cleaned nearly every day and our towels were changed very regularly over the 10 days. As for eating places we found most places along the strip were average, offering various deals to attract you in. One however stood out from the rest, and we would highly recommend it if you like chinese food. It is a 5 min. walk from the apts. and is called Asia. It is up the hill from the apts and when you get to the strip turn left, and it is less than 100yds. We went for the chinese buffet which was on the Thursday night and ended up going back 2 more times. It is a little more expensive than many of the other restaurants but is well worth the extra and is one of the best chinese restaurants we have ever eaten in, so treat yourself. We had a brilliant time overall, I must say the flexibility of having a hire car meant that we could explore many of the beautiful beaches and coves along the coastline, and with the many beach cafes and restaurants we had a fantastic and relaxing time.

My boyfriend and I (a reasonable pair of 30 something’s) have just returned from a FAB week in Praia da Rocha. We paid £200 for a cheap getaway and were not expecting much from Club Dos Arcos having read other peoples comments on Trip Advisor but we were pleasantly surprised!!

I would normally not really write a review but want to stick up for Club Dos Arcos!

Ok this place is not the Ritz but the staff on reception were really helpful when we arrived and we were checked in in no time. Our room was basic and the decor a bit dated but it was absolutely spotless! If you are used to flash places then this isn’t the place for you but we had no complaints whatsoever. The room was cleaned 3 times in our 1 week stay and they left fresh towels on each visit and the beds were changed too! We didn’t spend a lot of time in the room it was just a base and served its purpose very well! The location is perfect a hop skip and a jump to the beach and a sway and a stagger back from the bars and restaurants!

We stayed on the 3rd floor so didn’t bother with the lift (this has had a few mentions on this site) other than when we had our cases with us and ok its small and it doesn’t play music and it isn’t air conditioned but it worked absolutely fine!
The bar in the hotel was small and friendly and the chap behind the bar named Quim was a real character! I left my boyfriend in there a couple of times after 1 or 2 too many gins and he stayed in there until the early hours chatting away with the locals and had a great time! The Portuguese people are lovely!

We didn’t go to the pool area at all because the beach was so lovely and just a couple of minutes walk away so there was really no need and you can swim in a pool anytime at home! The beach is one of the cleanest I have ever been to not even a cigarette end in sight! You can lie on a lounger all day for 5 Euros and the staff from the Ancora beach bar will deliver your drinks to you at no extra cost which was lovely! The food in the Ancora was delicious and we had lunch there a few times my partner having “the best pizza he had ever tasted” and me a beautiful salad that really did look too good to eat!
All of the restaurants we visited were lovely in particular la Cassa Da Rocha which is set high up with a fantastic view! We had Catapalana which is a lovely Portuguese seafood dish which we both thoroughly enjoyed! We went to Concorde one evening and had chateaux Briand which was absolutely divine and only 28 Euros which is a bargain for two of us! Concorde had a great 2 course menu for 7 Euros which we had another night which was lovely! Also Adris was worth a visit offering a similar menu for around 7 Euros! They bring lovely warm bread olives, cheese and the local sardine pate before you order which we devoured every evening!

The local lagers ‘Super Bok’ and Sagres were both really good (always tastes better in the hot sun)! Drinks weren’t mega expensive but be careful the prices fluctuate quite a bit! We had some lovely cocktails too! Caipirinha well worth a try like a Mojito but with more MOJO!!!!

We really enjoyed our stay and for those people knocking Club Dos Arcos you shouldn’t book a ‘cheapy’ and expect 4 star luxury! We would book again with no hesitation :)

Good accodation but really bad apts. They were really dated, horrible place. Would put you off going back to portugal. The staff weren't bad. Window panes were missing, beds changed once a week, towels werent changed.. i had to ask for them myself. It looked more like a prison than apts. NEVER BE BACK

I've just got back from our holiday in Praia Da Rocha, Portugal. We stayed at Clube Dos Arcos appartments, after reading some of the latest reviews about this hotel i was a little worried but on arrival i was really supprised how nice it was. OK it was a little basic and the tiles in the bathroom and kitchen are a tad dated but it was spotlessly clean. We where really pleased as im a bit of a clean freak and i can't stand mess and dirt. They came and cleaned our room three times which was really nice fresh towels and they made the beds and had a little tidy up for us, not that it was messy. There is a safe in each room which you have to go get the barrle and key for it was a 15 euro diposit and 3 euros a day for so its not bad as you get the diposit back. The rooms where white washed walls and had tiled floors nice and cool for sunburnt feet. Overall we where really pleased with the hotel just 2 small things that you might not like is that i suffer with a bad back and the beds where church style beds and where quite stiff but a beds a bed i slept fine and the lift did breakdown on us once but there was four of us in there and thay are quite small it was bound to happen at some point but don't let that put you off the staff are really friendly and they speak English better than some English people.
Praia Da Rocha is a lovely place to stay we where really lucky with the weather 5 out of the 7 days it was really nice the 6th day was a bit cloudy but still warm a nice day to cover up and let the sunburn go down. The beach was absolutly beautiful the sea was clear and refreshing the sand soft and clean they had a trackter that cleaned the sand. 2 days out of the 7 we went on day trips we went to Slide and Splash and the Zoo Marine and would recommend both as they where fantastic days there is also Aqualand but it was closed until the 26th of May, there are plenty of boat trips to go on aswell we just didnt have enough time to do everything as we enjoyed the beach soo much we spent a few days there.
We went with another couple and we really enjoyed ourselves we all got a tiny bit burnt some more than others we ate some lovely food at the Sitting Bull Stake House its the one above the Hollywood its much better go there we went 4 times out of the 7 and it would of been more if we had found it before they do American and Mexican food the portions are huge the food is perfect the staff are amazing and the price was brill can't complain about anything apart from why isn't there one here my partner and my friends partner said they had the best stakes they had ever eaten and will be disapointed from now on anywhere else.
The holiday was fantastic we had a lovely time if you are thinking of visiting Praia Da Rocha i wish you a happy holiday and i hope you like it as much as we did.

my inital feelings on the transfer from the airport was this was possibly going to be the worst holiday every - you will note the huge amts of graffiti on the way to p.d.r and also the overcast sky didnt bode well. iv got to say i was very surprised at what i got for my money - i paid £160 all in (inc transfers). yes there is no getting away from the fact that the apartment block is in dire need of a lick of paint and the lifts make u feel like ur in a dumb waiter!! however my room was large and very clean with no damages. the shower is not as powerful as mine at home but much better than the trickle i had on my prev hol in sharm el sheikh. as a self catering virgin i was worried by the somewhat lack of cooking facilities (only 2 hob rings) however i managed perfectly well, you have a good supply of pots and pans and a kettle pot that does take a while to boil but hey ur on holiday not like ur gonna be late for work is it.
location wise you couldnt ask for more, a two min walk and you find yourself on the main highstreet. bag a right turn to find the most helpful chap in a shop who can give you a discount on the slide and splash waterpark (highly recommended). me and my partner found loads of meal deals and ate at a different place almost every night - many places were doing 3 courses set menu for 7euros and i can honestly say although the food is not michelen star quality it was most enjoyable.
the only negatives i can think of were the hotel is situated on a main road (as are all the others) and if you're not used to this it may upset you and there is a newly built hotel across the road, although nearly finished there was still some noise created, but be sure at 5pm promptly the noise stops lol.
the beach was clean and well tended and i was surprised to find even the beachside cafe/sandwich bars were not a massive rip off as you'd expect but be prepared for the steps to and from the beach!!
all in all i cant fault the place - friendly staff, clean apartment and great location. if you're used to luxury on ur holiday then i wouldnt come here its basic but functional.
