“Great hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2013

Having read previous reviews I wasnt entirely sure what to expect. However I was very pleased with this hotel. Great location for beach and nightlife. Check-in was easy and friendly staff. Free wifi in lobby. Room is out dated but very clean. Mini bar and safety deposit box very good value for money. Breakfast not exciting but has all the basics you need. Always able to get a sunbed next to pool and not too noisy. Would happily recommend to friends and family and would stay here again.

This hotel is a little gem. It is at the quiet end of the "strip" and seconds away from the beach and sea. I had room 411 which is classed as a double side sea view. It overlooked the pool area and straight out to a fabulous view of the sea. The rooms are dated, but they are comfortable and extremely clean. There is a good size fridge in the room. The pool area is spotless and the pools are lovely and plenty of sun beds. There is also a pretty garden area. I was B & B which was OK, nothing special. The steps down to the beach are just out of the gate through the garden and literally a few seconds walk. The beach is clean and golden sand. Most of the staff were friendly and helpful. There was a snack bar, whilst more expensive than nearby places, was very good. Would recommend the nearby Taffy's Grill. The owner Steve and his staff were brilliant and the food was excellent and good value. Taffy's bar was also very good, the guys were great. Overall would definitely recommend the hotel, purely for the location and the views of the breath taking sunsets.

hi, having left the hotel on friday 21st after 10 days holiday here, all i can really do is praise it.
I cannot think of anything bad enough against the hotel that would bring my rating down..

we were in room 206, looking up from the pool side, it is on the right. more or less on the corner,
you could see and hear the ocean, as we were nearer ocean end of hotel but could still hear the road, and see the road, if you looked that way, but never wanted to, looking ocean way was sun in face way, lovely.

room was very clean and tidy, as is the whole hotel, maids were in everyday.
the shower/bath and the hot water were lovely.
the fridge is noisy but after a few hours each night it quietened down every hour or so, for an hour or so. at a time.
the fridge stocked daily if you used the items, we did use the whole 10 days, minibar bill was 17euro's for our 10 nights, which was much less than i thought we used (even though we were meant to fill in the items used sheet, but didn't even read that until the 5th day, i forgot exactly how much we had already had, so never bothered, but on our last night, i guessed roughly what i thought it might have been, i was way out, and very surprised by the low bill)

the safe hire was quite good too, for 10 nights, it was 12 euro's plus 15 deposit, which i used towards our 17 euro bar bill on checkout day.

the pool, very lovely pool, cold though, but our first 5 days the weather was up in the low 30's everyday, so the pool, even though cold, was lovely to jump into in the late afternoons, after having been out in the heat all day.

breakfast was ok for me, mainly i just had 4 bits of toast and two cups of tea but some days i had scrambled egg on toast or scrambled egg and bacon... i found it best to have breakfast early, we were in there everyday before 8 .,

lobby is lovely, pc in little computer room, very old and kept crashing, but a short walk down the road, there was an internet cafe, more up to date and cheaper to use.
reception staff were brilliant , helpful and friendly.

the best part for us about the whole hotel, is the location, walk by the pool, through the garden out the gate, and you come to the steps(which are fine going down but can make your legs ache having to walk up them) down to the lovely beach, which from there, keep walking along the beach, go through the rocks and you are on the very main beach, which was absolutely lovely. if you walk along the top way from the hotel, instead of going down the steps, you come to a great viewing point that overlooks both these lovely beaches.

our hotel was in one of the quietest areas of praia da rocha, only a couple of mins walk to nearest restaurants but you cannot hear any noise from them... overall, excellent stay in lovely hotel.

Hotel Luar is situated in the most ideal position. You can see from my photographs how close to the beach it is however this is a holiday for the ABLE BODIED ONLY. That is if you want to get on the beach. Many reviews on here state 'a few steps to the beach', this is misleading. It is very steep and there are a lot of deep steps.
Free wi-fi in Hotel but limited to lobby, in the restaurant and pool you have to sit nearest the lobby to get reception. Shame really as a couple of boosters would have give it in rooms. The pool is freezing cold and hardly anyone uses it.

Our room:
We had room 306 which was on the left side (as you look at the main entrance) of the Hotel, the room was the first corner one facing the sea. We were asked where we would like to be when we arrived as it was very quiet and we chose this side as reviewers had recommended it. It is important to note that the left side gets the morning sun and has lots of high rise hotels as a main view however the right side is virtually completely hotel free and gets the evening sun. It's a personal choice of preference. There are no rooms directly facing the sea as the front balcony's are communal (with no chairs on though, nobody uses them) However you feel like you are facing the sea as it is right there in your face! Lovely :-)
Another important note, the hotel stated double/twin rooms, we asked for a double and they said they do not do doubles at all. All rooms are twin. The room was immaculate with basic bathroom, the shower looked rubbish yet it was the most powerful shower I have ever experienced! Decor is not worth commenting on, it is just not important. Beds are ok for a week, 1 quite poor pillow each. There is a noisy fridge next to the bed with 7 small bottles in it to buy. We had to turn it off at night, it vibrates like mad. Air conditioning unit if required. 2 chairs and small table on balcony.

Area:
The hotel is located just on the edge of the main area and is lovely and peaceful, you will not get disturbed by any noise from bars or restaurants. It takes approx 90 seconds to walk to the nearest restaurant out the back gate of the Hotel. Lots of grafitti outside the hotel and generally in the area which is such a shame and spoils it. Area very clean.

Cleanliness:
Immaculate. The cleaners work all day long and never stop, this hotel is very clean indeed and I am very fussy about that. They clean your room everyday with fresh bedding and fresh towels. There are no nasty insects and even though a sign says do not feed the cats, we didn't see any. The pool area is spotless with beautifully tended gardens.

Reception:
Very helpful and polite. From walking through the doors on arrival we were in our room within minutes. Very efficient and excellent English. We had a problem with our return transfers and the receptionist was so good at sorting it out, it took her 4 phone calls and 40 minutes but she just got on with it. So nice. We also asked about supermarkets/racetrack/taxi's and everytime they were 100% polite and helpful.

Breakfast:
Very basic. It is exactly as other reviewers have listed, no fruit or yoghurts at all which seems such a shame as there is gorgeous fruit locally and lots being sold at the side of the road. Turn left out of the back gate and just after Taffy's bar on the left the are little stalls and a lady sells a great variety. I have added pics of the breakfast as there were none on here.
Juices out of a machine
2 different processed sliced meats
1 processed slice cheese
Variety of jams and butter
Variety of sweet bread/croissants
Bread for toasting
2 cereals
Milk left out for cereals which nobody touched as it is left to go warm (yak!)
Scrambled eggs and boiled 'bacon'

This breakfast lets the Hotel down a little.

Tips:
Always difficult to recommend things as this is personal opinion however I will do my best.
There appears to be a great rush in some restaurants to get you served and out, for example one took our starter plate and put our mains down when we were still chewing our last bite of starters! There are a few with no atmosphere and quite miserable waiters too which makes the overall experience a bit rubbish. The one you can see from the hotel called Rocha is a lovely place for a view but the portions are tiny, no atmosphere and no wi-fi, the phone said there was wi-fi and when we asked the waiter he just barked NO! Claire's looks rubbish but is one of the best. Great food and lovely atmosphere, the waiters have a laugh with you and there is a guy who just socialises with everyone, lovely place give it a go. Taffy's bar, amazing breakfast, lovely lovely waiter who can't do enough for you, very popular and you can pick exactly what you want for breakfast, up to 9 items for 5.50 euro's, Heinz beans, grilled crispy bacon and English butter on the toast. Absolutely beautiful.
Everywhere apart from Rocha has wi-fi, you just ask for the passwords.
99% do 3 courses for between 7 and 9 euro's. Cheap as chips!

Summary
Over all this is the best Hotel along this area. It is immaculately clean, the reception are very efficient and helpful, the pool bar is adequate but expensive.
The beach is stunningly beautiful with amazing caves, you see many many photographers here and even modelling shoots. You will not get bored exploring and kids will love it. Sand is flat and clean, no rubbish at all. The beach beds and parasols are 10 euros per day. The beach bars are great and similar price to everywhere else. For example: 1 beer, 1 diet coke, 2 ham and cheese toasties and a portion of chips approx 10 euro's.
The sea is freezing! Lifeguards available. Unfortunately the lucky lucky men selling sunglasses etc are a pain.
Remember if you are not good with steep stairs you will struggle to get on the beach. I am 46 and due a knee replacement in 8 weeks time so had to take advantage of the rest area's half way up and down.
Turn left out of the hotel back gate and keep walking you will arrive at a stunning marina where there are lots of water sports and trips, we took a taxi boat to Portimao for 9 euros each return.
The hotel is 1 hour 30 minutes from the airport.

Hotel Luar is good value for money in terms of location as it is very close to the beach and there are great views from the rooms with large balconies facing the ocean.
The rooms are very plain, as is the hotel in general. There is a good size fridge, a tiny TV and a large wardrobe space. The bathroom has a bath/shower.
There is free Wi-Fi in the lobby, as well outside at the pool. The staff are friendly and the pool area is nice. Breakfast was a disappointment as there is very little of it; breads, scrambled eggs, rashers, cheese, sliced ham, 2 choices of cereal, juices, tea and coffee. No yogurts, fruits or or sweets of any kind.
Overall, the best things about the hotel are its views and it's location. It is right at the start of the main strip close to the shops and restaurant and it a short distance from the beach.
Don't expect much from the rooms, the breakfast or the bar but there are lots of places to spend your time in Praia Da Rocha without spending lots of money.

Room Tip: The rooms with the best view are listed as side sea view. The balcony doors are to the side but the...

The location of Hotel Luar is perfect. Overlooking a fabulous beach and cliff tops full of wild flowers. If you walk out the back of the hotel past the swimming pool you are on the promenade and within 100 yards of good restaurants.Add to this 10min from Alto golf course and a short 15min drive into Alvor
The staff at Hotel Luar are very friendly and helpful and we will be going back next year for about the 7th, time.

Room Tip: The rooms that look towards Alvor have sun on the balcony from early afternoon through till 7pm

Me and my girlfriend stayed at the luar for week in march and had a great time, we hired a car and found easy parking outside the hotel, the hotel itself was basic but very clean with a nice breakfast in a morning and the maids came on most days. the hotel bar/pool bar was good and the pool looked really nice but was closed as it was out of season. at night it's a five minute stroll to the bars and restaurants. the resort is great value for money with most bars like ''on the rocks'' selling 1 euro small beer and 1 euro small wine. also bernies bar is great with british owners ray and karl always there to help you if you need to know anything about the resort. we would definitely return.

Room Tip: ask for a sea view
