Always a bit dubious booking hotels online and actually wondering if they will look the same once you get there? We were really impressed with this one though. Great size room (I think we had a premier one) and decorated nicely. We would have liked to have had more tea and coffee supplies in the room, but we had a fridge so went to a local shop and bought some milk and coffee. The hotel had a nice pool area, although the water was too cold so I didn't actually go in. There is direct access to the stunning, huge beach.
The restaurant is also lovely although we didn't eat there (except for breakfast). We had a drink at the bar though and could see other diners enjoying their meal. We wish we had eaten there as the restaurants down the strip tend to only sell fried food.

The only downside is that there is no hotel parking, but we didn't have a problem finding somewhere in the surrounding streets. May be different in the peak season though.

We would definitely stay here again if we were going back to Portugal. Nicest looking hotel in the area. Beautiful property.

Room Tip: Well worth booking a premier room for additional space.

We loved this hotel from the moment we arrived and other holidaymakers on the transfer coach made admiring comments! The female receptionist was friendly and efficient, as were all staff except a couple of more sullen men on reception, who seemed uninterested.
The first view of the atrium, with the decorative pool running through it, was even better than in website pictures and our room was as hoped for, with superb views and a huge balcony. We'd asked for a quiet room, which it would normally have been, other than a beach volleyball holiday group directly opposite the hotel every day of our stay. Clearly, this isn't the hotel's fault, but the management should object strongly to the noise generated by this group, particularly in their non-playing times, when loud music was played and amplified announcements.
Our superior room was beautiful, presumably recently renovated, with quality furnishings and a luxury en-suite. The shower tray was in danger of flooding, which we reported, but it wasn't resolved, possibly because the problem was intermittent, and it would suddenly clear. The only negative would be the poor lighting, very gloomy in the evening. We didn't choose to have a kitchenette, so make sure you request this if it's important. We had a special price on the room, so my evaluation of the value relates to the price we paid.
Forget the bar! 4.50 for a 'large' beer, 2.70 Euros for a small (less than the usual Portuguese 'small').
Breakfast was a pleasure, varied each day and replenished frequently. I was really happy that skimmed milk was available, without being a special request. The restaurant staff were exemplary, friendly and efficient and there was a good atmosphere, with a variety of guests clearly enjoying the experience.
There was more outside space than we'd realised, with quality furniture and plenty of quiet space away from the pool. There are fairly steep, uneven steps from the gardens, directly to the beach, with a secured gate (the hotel electronic key-card gives access). However, the steps were perfectly manageable and not too many.
On check-out, the same pleasant female receptionist who'd greeted us, was as helpful and efficient as on arrival.
A small piece of advice: if you book a taxi to Portimao, ask the receptionist to tell the taxi driver you expect the direct route, or you'll be driven the long way and charged extra for the privilege. On our first occasion, the driver added 'extras', which we didn't have, and made a detour, adding notably to what should have been a cheap journey, and was on the return to the hotel.

We stayed here for a week over the Easter holidays. This is our third visit to Praia da Rocha in a year and have previously stayed in Hotel Jupiter but we fancied the look of the Oriental.

Positives:

Fab location on the main avenue but the quieter end so only a few minutes walk to bars and restaurants but with minimal noise.

Hotel is very clean everywhere. We had a studio room with a side sea view which was still good but full front would be amazing. The room was large with a huge bed, plenty of wardrobe space, 4 drawers, double vanity sinks, great shower pressure a small kitchenette with full size fridge (& ice box) sink, 2 hot plates, storage and basic kitchen essentials. There were two armchairs, foot stool, and sky tv with about 10 english speaking channels.

Views at breakfast or from sun-loungers were beautiful. Pool and garden area is lovely. Pool sun-loungers are rattan and have mattresses on them which is lovely and comfy.

Negatives:

The hotel is in the process of being upgraded and 30 rooms have been completed. Ours was not one of them. The main fault was that a lot of the tiles were cracked and so was one of the sinks. The lighting is awful, very dull so not great to do your make-up as the sun's setting! The decor is generally a bit tired but would've been great in its day.

One of the reception staff was quite abrupt when I had a problem but it was sorted immediately. Our wake up call at 6 am (which we'd seen the receptionist write in the diary & highlight) came at 6.40 and he tried to argue that we'd asked for 6.30!

Breakfast was ok. Usual continental and cereals but the 'hot' buffet was luke warm at best (no microwave). Eggs were overdone and items were not replaced very frequently. Cutlery was not replenished so you had to keep the same knife & fork for everything!

Bar prices were a rip off even though you expect it to be higher i.e large beer 4.50 euros but average in bar was 2 and even on sea front was only 3!

The tiny supermarket across the road is extortionate so just be aware there are much cheaper about.

Overall, despite a bit of a moan it was great, we would return and we still love Praia da Rocha!

Just come back from the Oriental, lovely looking Hotel, great location and views, very clean, comfortable beds, but sorry no atmosphere, felt that you could not speak at mealtimes, this hotel is for people who want silence, not a family hotel, food was just warm and not much choice, deserts were quiet nice, there was no information about buses trips or local markets, Joana on reception was very helpful, other staff were pleasant but reserved.

Just returned from our third stay at the Oriental a Hotel. The hotel is in a perfect location just overlooking the beach with a friendly staff who go out of their way to ensure that your stay is perfect. The rooms are very clean, comfortable & well appointed. We will be back again soon & would recommend this hotel to all.
