“Nothing works except the ants...”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 10, 2012

I'm not fussy or quick to complain about a cheap hotel, but this place was a disaster for us. We arrived in late May and were given a room on the first floor. The building is a 7-storey tower full of dark, depressing corridors. Our room seemed reasonable enough until we actually started to use it. No oven, just a two ring hob and guess what, it didn't work at all. Ditto for the television. What worried us most was that there were no locks on the sliding doors and the balcony was an open rail - very impractical if, like us, you have young kids with you.
So we asked for a move. I should say that the staff were friendly and tried hard to be helpful. We had the distinct impression that they are used to handling complaints. Indeed, we saw other people complaining in the five days we put up with Sol Flor. We were given a room on the top (seventh) floor with, you guessed it, still no sliding door locks. At least the hob now worked, but the only decent sized pan was an all metal battered frying pan, i.e. as soon as you used it the heat went straight up the handle and burnt you. We also now had a fridge with an interesting feature - the freezer compartment door fell open every time you opened the fridge. The tv didn't work but, again, when we mentioned this the guy promptly resolved it by fetching an aerial from another room - so now someone else will get a tv that doesn't work.
After making my depressing journey to floor 7 on the first night I went to open a bottle of wine only to discover that it was beyond the facilities of Sol Flor to provide a corkscrew. I went all the way down to reception again (there are no phones) and the girl fumbled in a cupboard for a few minutes and found one for me. Another 7-floor ascent through the gloom back to the room and guess what, the corkscrew was so badly rusted up that I couldn't actually open it. I gave up.

If that sounds a trivial matter, more significant was the constant invasion of ants all over the kitchen surface - a piece of cheap marble with huge cracks in it. No matter how often you wiped them up, they kept coming back. After wracking our brains for days about this I eventually discovered that on looking inside that it was the toaster that was keeping them going. Quite repulsive, but perhaps not as bad as the overpowering stench of sewage which floated up around bedtime every evening. Even closing up all your windows and enduring the heat could not keep it out.

The final straw was when my partner pulled a plate out of the kitchen cupboard to use and found the remains of an old salad and dried-on butter encrusted on the surface along with a couple more fossilized insects. We got straight on the phone and got ourselves moved as fast as possible. When I've uploaded my holiday photos I'll add one I took of the offending plate so that you can enjoy it too. Steer well clear of Sol Flor da Rocha.

Room Tip: Use another hotel.

Have just returned from 10 days with 2 other ladies. The apts were excellent. Spotlessly clean with linen and towels changed regularly. The kitchen was adequately supplied but we only had breakfast there. Lovely friendly staff.

Room Tip: We were on 7th Floor with pool view and had no complaints. May be a bit noisier in high season.. I...

I have just returned from a week holiday with 3 other girls. The Sol Flor da Rocha was amazing for the money we paid. We got a two bedroom apartment which was huge and spotlessly clean. Beds were v.comfortable. Apartment was cleaned each day and towels changed every second day.The kictchen has all the basic utensils, fridge/freezer, hob, kettle and toaster. The reception staff could not be more helpful or friendly. The pool area was beautiful and again, spotless. You are about a two min walk from the beach and the main strip but far enough back that you aren't bothered by noise. I would highly reccomend staying here.

Room Tip: get a room on a highter floor for good views.

I stayed in the sol flor da rocha the 11th of september for 5 nights with 3 other girls. Must say the apartment was fab when we walked in the door we were taken aback by the size of the apartment. There was 2 bedrooms one with two single beds and the other with a double bed. In each room you had your own little balcony (doors were a bit tricky to close but worked it out). Each window also had a shutter that came down over it which was needed as no aircon so did get quite hot one or two nights. We also had a full kitchen with everything you could you also had a double sofa bed that could be used.

We only went to the pool once and we spent the day moving seats as as the sun moved around the building we were been put in the shade. We went to the beach every day after that but must say is a nice pool area.

The walk up to the main strip is fine in the day and the evening but would not recommend walking down at night. We realised this the 2nd night when two guys tried to follow us we ended up getting in a taxi for €4 did this for the rest of the stay.

This is my 3rd time back to praia da rocha and would highly rate it. It was quiter this time of year than it would be in July/August but was still great fun. Must say the clubs are practially empty during the week nights but the pubs stay open until 4 anyway.

If looking for a cheap holiday would definetly say the sol flor da rocha.

We arrived here in a group of 5 on a lads holiday and enjoyed it throughout our stay. The room was clean and tidy and there was adequate kitchen utensils/equipment for our self catering holiday. The balcony was lovely at night although there are a few seagulls knocking about which gets kind of annoying. Beds were comfy and maidens came in nearly enough on a daily basis to change towels etc. Pool was only nice and pertty much what you'd expect. The only thing i would say is theres no entertainment at all within the hotel premises - we just went out to the beach front at night for the clubs and pubs so that wasn't a problem for us but i can imagine if you were with your kids they wouldn't enjoy it too much, although there is a small pool for the kiddys. If i was to be picky then i would say the locks on the doors are a bugger to open, i spent ages once trying to open the door one day, this swipe card way of doing it wouldn't go a miss now. Ace holiday, would reccomend the hotel to others!

We stayed in a two bedroomed apartment and loved it! The kitchen area was compact and had everything needed for a self catering holiday.

The pool area was well maintained and the maids cleaned the room everyday.

The atmosphere within the hotel was very laid back - perfect for a relaxing break. The childrens pool was perfect for my little boy and he loved it in there.

We found an Aldi close by and purchased food there (taxi cost 5 euro each way).

The staff on reception were fab; always polite and helpful. We found a lovely little placed to eat called Cafe Del Mar; try their Steak cafe Del Mar... It's lovely. The staff are lovely and love children!

We had the best time and would go back.

Enjoy xx

Me, my mum and dad stayed at the Sol Flor Da Rocha in June 2011 and had a fabulous time! The hotel is literally a ten minute walk away from the strip and beach, which is ideal as you can still sleep at night. The apartment was immaculate, and extremely spacious! We had a fridge/freezer, hob, microwave, toaster and kettle, all of which worked. We also had a huge balcony with a table and two chairs. The poolside was lovely and the hotel was full with all nationalitys (mainly Irish and Portugese), but we made lots of friends. The staff were very friendly and put themselves out of there way too help you, they even apologised as the hotel had just opened when we went after a refurbishment and the kitchen wasn't finished. The food they did supply (hotdogs, sandwiches and pizza) was lovely, and very cheap. Overall, the hotel was lovely and I would go back :).
